"The sun produced its biggest flare in nearly two decades Tuesday, just days after severe solar storms pummeled Earth and created dazzling northern lights in unaccustomed places."
AP reports: "The good news is that Earth should be out of the line of fire this time because the flare erupted on a part of the sun rotating away from Earth."
Okay everyone, put away your deflector shields. We got through the solar conflagration pretty much unscathed.
The lack of power outages, bricked satellites, and telegraph-operator burns makes me think we need a few more points at the top end of the Kp scale if we can max it out without some calamity.
Disruptions to communications devices, etc, aside, "A severe geomagnetic storm includes the potential for aurora to be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California."

NOAA just issued the Severe (G4) level geomagnetic storm watch for May 11, 2024
After updating their model by taking today's X2.2 flare from AR3664 into account, NOAA just issued the Severe (G4) level geomagnetic storm watch for May 11, 2024!
Meanwhile, sunspots AR3664 just produced another X1.1 flare an hour ago. Will we get an Extreme (G5) geomagnetic storm this Saturday?
For one day only this week, York ground station was active, running two satellite workshops with my MA students. Both were entirely successful, having involved some of the most complex and lengthy prep I've ever done for a single activity. A lot of hard work, time, and energy well rewarded with some great images and curious questions. An actual teaching win!

"The extreme weather. The melting glaciers. The weirdly warm oceans. They’re all the product of global warming, which is being driven by the release of the three most important heat-trapping gases: carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
And according to a new study from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, emissions of those three greenhouse gases continued to surge last year to historic highs."
More footage of a total solar eclipse , including from space
Satellite images were published by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Another video was taken by a camera on one of the Starlink satellites. The footage shows a dark spot moving across the surface of the Earth. #AureFreePress#News#press#headline#NOAA#Eclipse
#NOAA said that "normally mitigable" problems with voltage ⚡ control was possible, as well as "frequent and longer periods of #GPS degradation." Geomagnetic storms can potentially impact power 🔋 systems, damage transformers and extend the northern lights to New York and Idaho. It can also potentially require flight ✈️ ground control to issue corrective actions for orientation 🧭. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/earth-geomagnetic-storm-what-that-means-what-you-can-expect/
"An alliance of #rightwing groups has crafted an extensive presidential proposal to bolster the planet-heating #oil and #gas industry and hamstring the #EnergyTransition.
#Project2025, was convened by the notorious rightwing, #climate-denying thinktank the Heritage Foundation, which has ties to fossil fuel billionaire Charles Koch."
US citizens: please vote, and organize your friends. It's you against the #FossilFuel industry. The stakes are high.
"Allies of former President Trump want to muzzle federal climate science if he wins a second term.
The #Project2025 report says #NOAA should be “broken up and downsized” because “its current organization corrupts its useful functions.”
The document describes the agency’s office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research as the “source of much of NOAA’s climate alarmism” and says the “preponderance of its #ClimateChange research should be disbanded.”"
