"There are poisonous books—the Communist Manifesto, or Mein Kampf for example—and then there are books that are literally poisonous.

Covered in vibrant green bookcloth, hundreds of 19th-century volumes are actually laced with a toxic pigment, and one researcher who’s used to creating databases of volumes for research, has instead created one as a public health service; aptly named the Poison Book Project.

Emerald green, also known as Paris green, Vienna green, and Schweinfurt green, is the product of combining copper acetate with arsenic trioxide—yes, that arsenic."

WuMargaret,

If you like sci-fi, philosophy, and politics, I highly recommend The Dispossessed by Ursula K. LeGuin. There’s a lot to think about in the book, but it is only about 300 pages.

yaitorr,

@WuMargaret this is the second LeGuin recommendation I have added to my backlog. She must be terrific! I have book 1 of The Earthsea Chronicles.

Well, bought the Silo series books on Apple Books. I couldn’t resist the price! At $23.99 for all books, plus bonus essays and short stories, that wasn’t much of a stretch.

45: YELLOWFACE by R. F. Kuang

I had mixed feelings about this book: loved the jabs at publishing, but eventually the book verged on tedious. The performance was super.

How Dolly Parton has sparked a reading revolution in central western NSW https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/how-dolly-parton-has-sparked-a-reading-revolution-in-central-western-nsw-20230523-p5dand.html One year after Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library early reading program was rolled out in the town in the NSW Central West, borrowing rates at the local library are soaring and parents are forging new connections with their children and each other.

Project Gutenberg have joined the Fediverse via a Mastodon account here:

@gutenberg_org

If you aren't familiar, they're the group that OCRs and verifies out-of-copyright print works, then makes them available in electronic form to everyone ^_^

eta: See also Distributed Proofreaders doing a big chunk of the heavy lifting too, then releasing through Project Gutenberg: https://masto.ai/@ariaflame/110452031708604912

ariaflame,
@ariaflame@masto.ai avatar

@moira @gutenberg_org Though a lot of the OCRing, checking, verifying and final compilation is done by the Distributed Proofreaders group who then pass the results on the Project Gutenberg (https://www.pgdp.net/). Saving history, one page at a time.

Currently at one of the libraries here checking out some books for our youngest.

I don’t do much reading myself although I should, I have a few books that I have sitting on my shelf collecting dust. 😂

What's better than hosting a Books and Brunch event? I'm a volunteer for Raleigh/Durham Geek Girl Brunch and this was a blast! One of our members works at a local bookstore and gave us all ARCs as well. 🥰🥰 @bookstodon

Deglassco,

Countee Cullen would be 120 years old in a few days. Not as well known as poets like Langston Hughes, Cullen was an intimate and prominent participant in the Harlem Renaissance. His verses explored themes of identity, race, and cultural heritage, and challenged the prevailing societal norms of the time. He had an elegant craftsmanship that went a long way toward elevating the status of Black American poetry in mainstream literary genres.

Guess who I met at the Bay Area Book Festival in downtown Berkeley this month?

If you haven’t read @pluralistic’s “Red Team Blues” yet, it’s a fast-moving and deeply humane Bay Area tech/finance thriller.

I was so enthralled by "A Psalm for the Wild-Built" I had to immediately jump on the next book in the series, "A Prayer for the Crown-Shy."

tsmyther,

@boardgamebreakdown Is this ? “Hopeful SF” sounds fun!

tsmyther,

@boardgamebreakdown It’s basically a more hopeful genre, where we’ve gotten better about the environment and wealth distribution and such. Not quite as utopian and Star Trek, but on the way there, realistically.

duanetoops,

We experience time in rich deposits. All our Nows arranged in rows. A counted structure stacked and shaky. We move from experience to experience with a quota undisclosed. So measurably quantifiable. So unavoidably few. We experience time as something counting down...
