I am making tons of progress on my . APRS project called .

I got an igate relay hosted (this will be neccesary to ensure we can get dup packets):

https://igate.digipex.io

I got a web-app going that will display allt he clients on the map and give some statistics/status info:

https://hub.digipex.io

I also have the most important part, working code that talks to the radios and routes / rewrites packets. Right now it can send/receive, digipeat, and gate to and from the igate.

The code for digipex is here: https://git.qoto.org/digipex/digipex

And you can see some information about my particular digipex node here:

https://hub.digipex.io/views/overview.php?id=43449

The picture below is of a microcomputer (like a raspberry pi, its a khadas) running digipex and showing the packets it deals with on the miniature screen.

If my boss asks me

"OK, as a software company that relies on open source, we are willing to support open source more. What do you suggest how we should approach this?"

What would be some good articles I should read before answering?

(Boosts and direct advice is appreciated too.)

@bitbonk you can ask maintainers of your most important tools how you can support them. Both sides could benefit from paying for new tools features or fixes, consulting.

Or just pay for licences or sponsorship through GH Sponsors, Open Collective brother tools maintainers prefer.

RIP to Bram Moolenaar, creator of Vim, on August 3 2023.

I've written tens of thousands of lines of code with vim, more every day.

It's a shining example of how geeks volunteer, by providing and maintaining useful tools at no cost.

HelioLinc3D is a new program to discover Near Earth Objects (NEO). Working on a NEO data set, its made its first discovery: a "potentially hazardous" 180m asteroid designated 2022 SF289 that passes within 225,000km of Earth orbit, which older surveys had missed. Requiring half the number of images conventional survey algorithms would use, HelioLinc3D combined fragments of data spread across 4 nights of observations to make the discovery:

A discovery of a Near Earth Object is made when a point of light is observed in a series of night sky images moving unambiguously in a straight line. Collecting the necessary evidence can be stymied by poor weather, extreme faintness of the object, or hidden in the background glare of brighter stars.

HelioLinc3D is open source software specifically designed for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and its 10-year survey of the sky to begin in 2025:

Any #FOSS / #selfhosting enthusiasts for photo sharing in my timeline?

We want to share 700 pictures of our wedding weekend.

I tried Piwigo -- it's cumbersome, but it allows guests to upload stuff form their mobile phones. (In theory)

I tried PhotoPrism -- it's sleek and responsive, but I can't create nested-albums and share the parent one (e.g. wedding day → party vs wedding day → ceremony)

Reeeally want to not use Google/Amazon photos. :/

0x33,

@ctietze @nextcloud @mjtsai Yeah, I agree: I hardly use Nextcloud Photos. I use Memories, as mentioned by @dugite_code when I'm on a computer and Simple Gallery on my phone with the photos synced.

HomeGallery looks great and is very fast to use, but I don't think it covers enough of your needs.

ctietze,
@ctietze@mastodon.social avatar

@0x33 @dugite_code Memories looks capable. It needs a root folder of all my photos, so I hope its album management would still work for us. (Also don't see nested albums, yet.)

Some people are just going too far with the hostile culture, when there are more productive ways to collaborate on software. What we've got here is failure to communicate with a fellow developer. 😶

Boot people sending cease & desist to the maintainer of is so antithetical to their cause and only digging grave deeper for . and policies do suuuuuuch a good match, do they not?

But I also recognize that, maybe, @libreleah shouldn't have attempted to get up to speed, at all? It's not like we're dealing with the brightest of the forks anyway. Just saying there are two sides to this story that I don't get completely. 🤔

paw,

@rm4 The thing with app stores is it's often hard to find these apps against all the other rating-gamed contenders. Not many good filtering options and not knowing names to watch for makes things more of a challenge than they need to be.

rml,

foss requires a lot of free time to get properly involved. due to patriarchy, colonialism, apartheid, and white supremacy, white cis men have unbelievably greater access to free time, not to mention the greater pantheon of privileges we are handed.

theres no freedom if there is systematic exclusion. so obviously, racism & patriarchy is a contradiction and emergency for software freedom.

PublicLewdness,

This week's donation went to the OpenAndroidInstaller project. It allows for easy install of various deGoogled Android operating systems to mobile phones. For instance on my Pixel 2 it was as simple as a dozen or so mouse clicks and downloading two files to get Android replaced by LineageOS. There weas no use of a temrinal required for the install and this will really help non tech saavy people get free of Android as well as save time for those who are tech saavy. There are over 60 devices supported at this time. The project code is licensed using GPLv3.0.

The main website for the project is here:

https://openandroidinstaller.org/

The source code is on Github:

https://github.com/openandroidinstaller-dev/openandroidinstaller

The project has a presense on Mastodon:

Calixthe,

is one of my favorite authors and certainly my favorite living author. His latest book Every Man A King is a follow up to Down the River Unto the Sea, both apart of his new King Oliver mysteries.

In any case, the audiobooks are masterfully narrated by Dion Graham and just absolutely enjoyable.

You can find many great books and audiobooks via your local public library and listen at your leisure. Two of the most popular apps are and .

Libby provides e-books and audiobooks, and Hoopla delivers "audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, TV, magazines, or music everywhere you have a screen"

https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby

https://www.hoopladigital.com

The federal government has conveniently set up a website to help you search for your local library: https://www.usa.gov/libraries and https://www.careeronestop.org/LocalHelp/CommunityServices/find-libraries.aspx

Or you can just search for "Public Library + Your City or County and State"

I am typing all of this out real slow Riley Freeman style because people are busy and tired and sometimes forget that we have these resources at our fingertips.

Also because this is what the Republicans, third party candidates and those telling you NOT to vote want to take away from all of us.

E-books, audiobooks, movies, music and TV series available at your local public library for you, your children, your siblings, your elders and your friends, free of charge and best of all, no late charges because the content is returned automatically on the due date.

We all know this, but sometimes we get tired and we forget.

I just stumbeled across OniStep (.com) and it's closed windows software. But it's virtually what I have been wishing for from AI for Linux.

Researching what to do is half of using linux. What command? What software? How do I _? And there is a lot of great documentation, and I do indeed RTFM. But giving and receiving help could be a lot less circuitous.

Could we crowdsource built-in help for ? Could the cursor be programmable now?
