Which keyboard(s) are you currently using?
Hello there! Thought I'd kick this community off with a question....
Hello there! Thought I'd kick this community off with a question....
dhrystone, #keychron Q3 Pro. Windows and Mac compatible. I know, who cares about the latter right? Because it isn’t a magical white chiclet keeb. But hey. 🤷🏻♂️😁
DJDarren, Decided to get one of those mechanical keyboards that all the nerds love.
Pretty cool, but I’m not sure how to post my toots with it.
DJDarren, @tigerfort I didn’t say my gold was worth anything. I’m the Mastodon equivalent of a Ratners carriage clock.
josevnz, @DJDarren Just fix the USB port that comes with this model. Oh wait…
JLW_the_Jobber, Needed something to tinker with today, so I did some “clean up” on my #mechanicalkeyboards. Here is the slicker new look to the candybar (top: before, bottom: after)
benjaminhollon, @JLW_the_Jobber @Wyatt
What does lime sound like?
JLW_the_Jobber,
Ordered a Keychron K2 which should be arriving next week, but I wasn't really feeling any of the keycap selections on their website...
dhrystone, Fight me. #MechanicalKeyboard #mechanicalkeyboards #mechkeys
dhrystone, @davealvarado Is it really a good idea to misread a post claiming technology is dumb and believe that in fact it meant that not having a skill was dumb? Reread the post.
Also, I just noticed that one of the replies I made on the post, to someone else, is unlisted, so you obviously didn’t read it. What I said was that I’m an ex tenkey data entry operator (proof machine) for a bank and that I don’t see the need for two of the same sort of key on a keyboard.
That is despite being at one time able to key in a sixteen digit credit card number in less than a second and a half.
If you need to tenkey stuff, you can get a separate detachable keypad that can be put away when needed to save desktop space. Beyond that, if you need to enter numbers you can use the numeric keypad.

sparsick, German
drahardja, I love this. #mechanicalKeyboard #retro #retrocomputing
8bitdo Retro Mechanical Keyboard
https://www.8bitdo.com/retro-mechanical-keyboard/
drahardja, @mado I preordered a unit.
prokyonid, @drahardja if only it had 104+ keys
AAMfP, Glad that I've bought my #ErgoDash #MechanicalKeyboard from #FalbaTech, but:
- I've asked for no tilting/tenting kit, and there is one. Not a big issue, but removing it will expose the screws holes, now. 🤦🏻♂️
- The asymmetry of lowest four keys, in left (mods) and right (arrows) halves is really annoying.
icanswiftabit, @AAMfP I hadn't so much space. I taped them on closing plexi but in the way it was matching wooden case's shape.
AAMfP, @icanswiftabit
I'll think about that, when the keyboard will return (shipped this morning 🤞): I'm tempted by the tilting/tenting but I can't even touch-type, so probably pointless.
AAMfP, Hey, #MechanicalKeyboards pals!
Has anyone experience with FKCaps custom #keycaps ?
https://fkcaps.com/custom/
I would live to create (and buy!) my own perfect set for my #ErgoDash, but even though I'm aiming at DSA PBT, I'm wondering if laser-printed labels would last longer or not.
Are there similar alternatives to this service, with dye-sub or double-shot?
AAMfP, @capibara
Mine is the screenshot of the layout/keycaps custom I'm preparing with fkcaps.com/custom ... I told you it's cool! 🤣
AAMfP, @capibara
Nice lady!
sarajw, Weak Note V: This time in short-form!
On the main site:
https://sarajoy.dev/blog/notes/More basic but also rainbows:
https://sarajoy.dev/basic/notes/#weekNotes #bulletPoints #unorderedLists #streamOfConsciousness #climateDoom #soreFeet #keyCaps #meetUps
sarajw, @frederic Ahhaaaaa that's cool. Yes I turned it off for reduced motion but haven't edited the title font size specifically for weak notes yet.
THANK YOU that was helpful
sarajw, @alexandra thank you! Just feels good to get stuff down sometimes eh
thpoll, Did I mention that the #PolyKybd can do Emojis..? #MechanicalKeyboard
thpoll, @vozhyk That's the goal. I have a little python program that talks to the keyboard via the HID protocol. For now, the python program can query supported languages, the currently active language and also set it. However it is very basic at the moment.
_lenin_, @thpoll makes complete sense, excellent work, nevertheless.
thpoll, Here are some pics from the transparent case I prepared for #HackadayEurope #MechanicalKeyboards
trevorflowers, So, I'm designing a system to produce 1:4 scale keyboards that are as close as possible to the look, feel, and sound of the full scale originals. The first version will be used in miniature VT100 terminals and I hope to reuse much of the work for other designs and scales.
This is the head of a threadlog about my process, goals, mistakes, and progress.
#miniature #keebs #retrocomputing #vt100
/cont
trevorflowers, I like to leave test prints around the house so that I catch them out of the corner of my eye which lets me see them with a less familiar vision. Making a thing in CAD tends to distort what I can see of it.
#vt100
chrishuck, @trevorflowers In CAD, 1000 feet may as well be 0.01mm. It’s easy to lose a sense of scale when modeling sometimes. For a lot of my work, I insert a 6ft tall human model into my layouts to see how crazy (or not) something is.
terrehbyte, Been considering an Air60 V2 since it largely checks off all the boxes:
✅ QMK
✅ Wired/Wireless w/ BT + 2.4GHz
✅ 67% or lessIts USP seems to be its physical design that allows it to be placed on top of a laptop keyboard without actuating it, making it possible to have a smaller physical footprint when used away from yourh usual desk.
terrehbyte, Had to reflash to make a few adjustments based on usage:
- Fix wireless profile bindings (accidentally used the wrong keys)
- Replace KC_MENU with KC_APP
- Add KC_INS to align with my muscle memory for hitting SHIFT+INS to paste
Also now trying it out via the 2.4Ghz dongle!
terrehbyte, It's been going pretty well so far, though the board seemed to hang while typing, causing me to type 'o' endlessly until I power cycled the board.
Hoping that's not gonna be a common issue.
anthony, #MechanicalKeyboard fans, I think it's time to replace my DasKeyboard 4. There's some weird stuff happening and I think it's just had enough of life. Any recommendations for a similar alternative? UK full-size, preferably wired with a volume dial and a couple of built in USB ports. This is Cherry MX brown which I really like. I don't particularly want to build my own
brunty, @dalereardon @anthony Ahh I understand now! UK Keyboards have a dollar symbol too, it's on the number 4 key above the alphanumeric keys, the 3 key has the UK pound symbol
dalereardon,
loop0, Typing on this split keyboard is really slowing things down, specially programming. I wonder if I will give up. #mechanicalkeyboard
kirschwipfel,
AAMfP, @kirschwipfel
You're better than me: I've bought the ErgoDash in the summer, using it daily since then, but still can't put my head into touch-typing, yet. 😒
@loop0 @hl
wjrii, (edited ) Trying out this Mastodon/Microblog thing. Had a customized TKL keyboard plate laser cut, 3D printed and painted a case, hand wired the switches, and added keycaps. Geekhack link. #mechanicalkeyboards #DIY #3dprinting
wjrii, @Deceptichum I had three identical plates made, though one I modified very slightly. After accepting that I'd need to simply live with a split Left-Shift, it's been extremely usable.
Build 1 was BBC Micro inspired and is a simple flat sandwich with oak sides, DSA on the FRow, a Dolch-like "VSA" elsewhere, and Box Navies. This may still be the one I like typing on the most.
Build 2 was pre-lubed brown TTC, sloped 3d prints for the left and right, and stiff springs in the middle. In effect the entire board is a leaf spring. CSA keycaps from Amazon. This one has the double shift adjusted (courtesy of a dremel and a metal file) to be in line with what the ISO layouts do.
Another angle on this one, to really show off them layer lines!
Entire writeup with pictures of all three are on my geekhack thread. They're all a little too rough around the edges to make sense as anything other than personal projects, but they are usable and do have their charms, and I love building these things from scratch.
wjrii, @petejohanson trust the fisherman.
AAMfP, Being gazillion years I'm using reverse T layout for my arrow keys,
⬆️
⬅️⬇️➡️
using the linear layout arrow keys
⬅️⬇️⬆️➡️
of my new #MechanicalKeyboard #ErgoDash is really extremely absolutely difficult. 😱
Columnar staggering is not the problem, arrow keys are!
I'm getting a really crazy headache...
RickRae, @AAMfP
Fairy nuff! Have fun! :ablobcatattention:
PepeGodzilla, @AAMfP having the same problem rn. Maybe switching up and down will make it usable, but i'm just used to having 2-row arrows.
raphael_hemme, I watched this nice talk by Mattia Dal Ben during my workout this evening: “34 keys is all you need: an ergonomic keyboard journey”
I totally forgot about the Miryoku #mechanicalkeyboard layout (https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku) after finding it super strange a while back.
But when I saw it on one of the slides in the #Colemak DH version, I realized, that it is not THAT different from what I’m currently using and probably it is even better than my current layout.
AAMfP, @raphael_hemme
In the end I've bought an ErgoDash "v1" (three 1u keys in each thumb area) from FalbaTech.
Waiting for it in next days.
I'm already prepairing my layout: https://gist.github.com/marcoXbresciani/280165422fbd04da6bd90dd62be287b2
raphael_hemme, @AAMfP
Nice. Let me know how you like it.
JLW_the_Jobber, I went from a hodgepodge of MT3 keycaps to a beautiful arrary of transparent cherry profile caps 😎 #mechanicalKeyboard #keycaps
40% keyboard with a red, yellow, and blue transparent cherry profile keycaps
benjaminhollon, @JLW_the_Jobber YIKES. 😂
benjaminhollon, @Wyatt @JLW_the_Jobber My own ~$380 suddenly seems very reasonable. 🤣
