dangillmor, (edited ) Does anyone know of a way to buy an EV that doesn't relentlessly spy on the driver/passengers and send the data to whoever the carmaker feels like selling it to?
Related: Does anyone know of a service in the Bay Area that will disable all the surveillance that was, without my knowledge or permission, built into a 2008 Prius?
Alice, Bad news: One of my coworkers just followed me on Mastodon.
Good news: My watch is letting me count my panic attack as a workout.
Alice, @mculbertson I'm not sure. I mean, my profile pic is an anthropomorphic hotdog, but my banner is several photos of me eating food, so who knows?
mxyzptlk, @Alice If that happened to me, I'd disappear from the network for a while before opening an account under another name.
TonyStark, I’ve said this before but apparently it hasn’t sunk in but if you say “Biden has lost my vote”, don’t expect anyone to listen to you or be surprised he’s not out gunning for it. The election is 6 months out. If there’s no way you’re voting for him, nobody fucking cares what you want.
You can enjoy likely a 7-2 or 8-1 conservative SCOTUS that will be grinding down our rights for the next generation or three. Enjoy that.
PamelaBarroway, @TonyStark Yes, and TFG was at it again: https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/trump-attacks-the-jews-and-bibi-attacks-biden
TonyStark, @Snowshadow I’ll get back to you tomorrow.
hotdogsladies, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was Alfred Molina's first movie.
Not too shabby.
bradsbrown, @hotdogsladies ok but I’m pretty sure that’s @gruber in that still, not Alfred Molina.
SloanStudio, (edited ) @hotdogsladies I loved hearing about Spider-man and how he was contracted for 3 movies, but thought it was over when they killed off his character only to be brought back 17 years later! I still can't believe they pulled that movie off so well. Loved it.
FlockOfCats, (edited ) Called an ambulance for this dude. I’m pretty sure he just needed to sleep it off, but not in the street, bro.
Also, I was worried there was a small chance something else was wrong 🤷♂️
But my main concern was leaving him and then finding out the next day he got hit by a car
softicecreamlesley, @FlockOfCats Thanks for being a Good Samaritan. 😇
FlockOfCats,
MLE_online, Lettuce is such a weird looking cat, so my sister and I were trying to figure out what exactly makes her look so odd.
It's definitely something with her eyes, but also her ears point straight up too much.
acsawdey, @MLE_online It seems like her ears are disproportionately large compared to "average" cats, they are more along the axis toward fennec fox or corgi ears.
One of my jobs at with a rescue I work with is to take pictures of all the surrendered animals so the placement person has something to work with. Anyway, I have a lot of pictures of cats. It seems to me you can sort of draw a line from the point between the eyes to the tip of the ear, and see where the outline of the skull intersects.
MLE_online, @acsawdey you're right. they are bigger than normal
merchantHelios, Any recommendations for a replacement? Old phone's a Galaxy S10
RT: https://poa.st/objects/fec605d6-564c-4ce1-8aec-65194d6d81be
pinemarten, @merchantHelios I bought my first android phone a couple of years ago, a Galaxy A13 5G. Cheapest Samsung at the time with 5G. $275 + a big memory card. Fits in pocket with smaller screen, superb battery life. The fingerprint sensor may be broken, and did not work well when new, unlike my former iPhone. I deliberately avoided a phone with facial recognition.
merchantHelios, @brimshae honestly i may just get a refurbished or brand new one, since that costs less than replacing the screen
skinnylatte,
skinnylatte, @betsyvr it was PACKED
skinnylatte, This is only slightly worse than the dog businesses you see somewhere like silver lake. Where it’s often ‘crystals and healings.. for your dogs!!’ Douchey private dog clubs meh but new age stuff for dogs, god no and if they weren’t rich people they’d all be charged with animal abuse
mcc, I hate it how transit apps will have a mode that lets you say you're about to get on a bus and then tracks your trip but if you're already on the bus and you just want it to estimate when you'll get there this is always awkward or impossible in the UI
mcc, @SnoopJ hmm I was just poking around in that app but couldn't figure it out. I'll try again. The trip mode in that one has always seemed a little oblique
azonenberg, @mcc My kingdom for a tool that can be used effectively for hybrid bicycle-transit navigation.
Taking both distance and transfer delays into account, with user configurable weights for least riding vs least fare vs quickest arrival. And the ability to persistently mark (crowdsourced plus local preferences) certain areas or road sections as "I don't want to bike here due to unsafe traffic conditions/road design or poor road surface quality, either cross via transit or route me around them".
inferis, Allergies are brutal. I've gone 6 years without any issues over here, but this year it's bingo time.
bw, After 5 years of WordPress, I have rebuilt my website using @eleventy! I've been using Eleventy for years now on other projects (including one for NASA) and I'm super stoked to be using it for my personal website.
I did a little writeup about it.
https://blakewatson.com/journal/rebuilding-my-website-with-eleventy/
bw, @box464 Thanks! I'm basically doing what @cory did, but in a cloud function.

cory,
gwynnion, Musk and Dorsey want to turn every bar into a Nazi bar so they can force people to hang out and listen to them.
They can sense how much they suck as human beings, but their egos make them incapable of grappling with it. So they try to make it our problem instead.
glyph, @gwynnion @jwz the real tragedy here is that in objective terms, they have millions of fawning fans and could easily be surrounded by nothing but obsequiousness if they so chose. But to do that they would have to have confidence in their selfhood, real self-esteem and self-respect. Instead the whispering, gnawing void at the core of their beings knows that we are right, that they do suck ass, and thus they are driven interminably to silence us all by a self-loathing they can never escape
Impossible_PhD, Look, I'm not saying anything.
But I'm not not saying anything either.
Completely coincidentally, Beneath the Surface has surpassed 50,000 unique reads.
Impossible_PhD, @OftOverthinking A typical article is around 3000ish these days, for reference.
And tbh, I'm not surprised. Amanda Roman's piece had a huge impact for questioning folks. I didn't find it until I was well past that stage, but I saw the impact it had on people... and how it want able to speak to some of the most important stuff. So, I spent a few months, did a lot of research, and ran it past some psychologists for prerelease feedback.
I knew there was an unmet need. I just didn't expect I'd--
Impossible_PhD, @OftOverthinking
--actually be able to effectively meet it, and certainly not to the scale I did. Like, when it premiered, it did, on its first day, about twice what most of my articles back then did, and it really hasn't slowed down since. For a sense of scale, it's been out for about ten months. That means it's gotten, on a monthly basis, more readers than a typical article of mine gets total.
And has for nearly a year.
Mind-blowing for me.
Adam_Cadmon1, I wonder what would happen if we let rich people stay rich, we just made sure no one was in poverty. Everyone had a house, everyone had food, medicine, recreational stuff.
That might be nice.
trochee, It was the GI Bill, yes — for white people, especially straight cis men.
Whenever anybody suggests expanding those benefits to anybody else, the backlash is enormous.
So enormous that it often results in those guarantees being taken away even from those men
johnefrancis, @Adam_Cadmon1 @WarnerCrocker it's not so much the being rich itself that's the problem - it's the using the rich to keep everyone else poor
oysta, Nobody:

Adorable_Sergal, i'm so goddamned angry at myself, i reinstalled windows on my tablet to create a recovery image for someone but it also updated the firmware and now i can't get any linux distro to boot, fuck me, i dont want to fucking use windows 11, i think i fucked myself godfuckingdamn it
DrGravitas, Wait, so it locked grub out entirely or the bootloader repair thingy doesn't work anymore? D:
Adorable_Sergal, @DrGravitas Grub works, but the handoff from Grub to the actual linux kernel/initramfs/whatever causes UEFI to step in and say "no." and it hard locks the system to prevent the boot
jake4480, Ever have one of those weeks
jake4480, @DanielTuttle I'm not ready to do it all over again but worse. I'm just not
heyfluxay, @jake4480 I feel that would be accurate, yes
skinnylatte, When most people get massages, they’re generally looking for a relaxing time.
When I get a massage, I’m looking to be the subject of some pretty serious karate moves.
Anything less than that is simply outrageous to pay for.
zachklipp, @skinnylatte my parents recently sent me this video of their yard and I was like “I need this on my back”
skinnylatte, @zachklipp there.. may be places in sf I can introduce you to

bradwilson, @scalzi I only recognize you and Cory, so I have a birthday gift list now so I can find even more awesome authors. 🤘🏼

mcc, @joshuaelliott Don't know yet!
mcc, @joshuaelliott I guess I'll find out
reay, MAC PEOPLE, HEAR ME NOW.
I have an old iMac from a friend that had a dead harddrive that I was able to replace pretty cheaply and has worked fine ever since, though it's topped out at an old OS.
I got another iMac from a neighbour suspecting it may be a harddrive issue as well, which could be an easy fix.
BUT, with both of these stopping at much older OS's that don't get updates any longer and won't run more modern programs, the question came up today...
1/2
feld, @reay https://appleinsider.com/inside/macos/tips/how-to-run-new-macos-versions-on-older-macs-using-opencore
I will warn you if you want to connect an Apple account please make a fresh one for these because weird things can happen when "unsupported" devices are on your account. It caused my friend a ton of headaches
dap6000, I have heard reports of people successfully installing unsupported newer OS releases on older hardware manually. There are limits, of course.
I'd suggest searching for your specific hardware paired with the first OS to drop official support then work up from there. From the Apple menu go to About this Mac and look for something like "iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2015)" for your hardware. In that specific case the oldest OS to drop support is MacOS 13 Ventura. See https://www.macworld.com/article/673697/what-version-of-macos-can-my-mac-run.html
hotdogsladies, MILF Inflation has stolen so much valor from the women of "The Walking Dead."
hotdogsladies, ZILF.
Knottyline, @hotdogsladies A few weeks ago I saw a car with a I Love MILFs bumper sticker and muttered to myself “Oh yeah? Name their last album”
