The neckline is ripping apart on this t-shirt and I’d like to repair it with a neat looking visible mend. Does anyone have a suggestion for a simple, but fun #VisibleMending technique I could use? I don’t know any crosstitch techniques, but I do have some cool embroidery thread and needle on hand. https://www.reddit.com/r/Visiblemending/
Thanks for all the tips today! This was my first #VisibleMending project and I went with @ChurchHatesTucker’s suggestion of using a buttonhole stitch on my #BlackbirdRaum shirt. I fixed three holes and added a few unnecessary flourishes to the silkscreened illustration.
I am very easily influenced by textile craft videos so I guess I'll be doing this for the foreseeable future.
#VisibleMending embroidery to take off stress from the spot between two patches that I didn't want to overlap. It's just a fancier and thicker cotton machine stitching thread, but it's quite pretty.
The button placket of the skirt gets a lot of strain so it's not the first time I've patched it up. There are also now patches on patches... But because I don't much care about how the inside looks, I've been trimming off the extra layers with pinking shears. If you sew on the patches with as short a stitch you can manage, and even double it up, the fabric itself will tear before the seam allowances fray to the point of failure!
Dear esteemed strangers, acquaintances and friends, I really like this skirt and am interested to see how long it will take me before it's more patch than skirt!
Why am I hanging around here? #Procrastination. I have to write a French promotional text for myself with trous de mites in meinem Gehirn.
The worst thing is that the topic only exists in English, but some visitors don't like foreign languages. 🙄 How do I tell them ... about my workshop for #VisibleMending! Je travaille sur la définition succincte en français. :clippy:
@NatureMC In the mid 90s there was a project called 'Europanto':
„Europanto esse un ‚pidgin‘ gemade von multe parts von multe Europish langues, que chaquebody with un gemutfeeling por dies langues verstand posse. Il esse gedacht by Diego Marani, un traducter por die Europish Togethering.“
In our Sunday animations in the #culturalHeritage centre, I finished my #visibleMending project: a #secondHand jacket with a completely scuffed collar. For a better look I fixed 2 more patches. All people were very curious. Then the reactions:
⭕️ I would never dare to wear s'th with patches.
⭕️ I never had the time (but they have time for TV, social media etc.) @visiblemending@sewing
@NatureMC
Wilde Stiche kann ich schon eher.😆 Mal sehen.
Visible Mending finde ich jedenfalls faszinierend. Sowohl als Konzept als auch von den Ergebnissen her, die ich im Netz sehe.
I was rummaging through old photos and found this testimony of how I started (and then got hooked on) #VisibleMending. Moths had eaten holes in my favourite jumper. I was furious and swore revenge with a needle. Since I couldn't embroider properly or be accurate, I "needle-painted" yarn moths. Today, everyone thinks the jumper is an expensive designer piece. 🤭
Does anyone have examples of #visibleMending on knit fabrics (like jersey)? I know you can darn knitted items, but that is not what I'm thinking about. T-shirt material is what I'm talking about.
@artcollisions The leaves are embroidered over holes in the first photo, and there’s a lightweight patch behind each leafy area. The heart is on wool, but would work on jersey too.
Not too visible but in the spirit of mending. Went for a metallic silver thread for some extra shine for some visibility in comparison to plain white stripes on pants...
I want to learn how to do #VisibleMending but I suck at teaching myself new #hobbies so I want to take an in person class & the only ones near me start at $100+.
So yeah, got any recommendations for learning how to mend clothing in fun ways? Sigh. I see if I can get a book out from the library.
Bought myself 2 goodies- #Sashiko needles & a chalk pencil (photo below). I already have or can borrow the rest of what I need from #crafty friends. Also got 2 books on mending at the library. I'm curious to know how I'm going to do with this. Some crafts I'm a natural at, others I struggle with.
Today's #stitching practice. 🌠 This was fun. I may do this to a pair of jeans I actually wear. Lol. Does it look ok?
Photo is a scrap of blue denim with 3 stars & a crescent moon stitched in off white silk thread. 3 rows of straight stitches connect them all. I think I may like doing #embroidery (which I have little knowledge of) vs #mending. I'm going to keep practicing both.
Yesterday instead of doing any of the things I was supposed to I spent some time further fixing up Theseus' Skirt. Patch upon patch upon patch, especially on my lap where the cats sit and have their little claws.
As long as you lay the patches following the grain of the garment, you can use any shape you like, but I like using polygons with obtuse and 90 degree angles. The corners are easier to turn under and it's a slightly more organic shape than squares. I just use old scraps.
If you use a small enough stitch you can just trim out the inside, but don't cut a hole in the NEW patch like I did, had to put another patch on the patch. 😂
🧵 1/ A thread about the crazy project of planning an #exhibition stand in only 3 days!
Procrastinators have one strength: they really come into their own under time pressure! I stood in for an exhibitor at the Fibreart Festival at extremely short notice. I didn't have any #displays or material for the stand. I have to set it up on Thursday, and I still have umpteen appointments beforehand. What the hell can I do?
Read ALT for more infos.
I’m in the middle of doing some visible mending on my well used sun hat.
Just some veins to finish on the dark green leaves. #VisibleMending#leaves#sunhat
#AltText : close up of three dark green and one light green cloth leaves stitched onto the top of a muddy green hat. The stitches holding the leaves on are in the shape of the veins on leaves. One leaf has not been finished and the cotton ends are not sown in.
A question for menders: when/how do you decide if the fabric of a much-mended garment is worn too thin to be worth mending again (and it's therefore time for deconstruction/repurposing/compost etc)? #mending#VisibleMending
@DMakarios In a somewhat brutal way: I carefully (!) pull the fabric in opposite directions in several places with both hands. If holes or tears form everywhere, it's not worth it.
Then I cut the Visible Mending into pieces that I use for art journals or as patches. (I don't compost because of some toxins for soil life/microplastics).
1/2 Next time in our cultural heritage centre: Pomme Fripe.Just delicious! 🍎 🍟
You bring six good used clothes and can exchange them for up to six other pieces. Or you just give your used clothes and drink a coffee, talk with others.
2/2 BTW, the idea is not new - nowadays, you find it in most cities. What's new: We bring it from the European capital #Strasbourg to a very rural region in a nature park, into a village with only 920 inhabitants. https://www.maison-rurale.fr/events/pomme-fripe-club-echange-de-vetements/
It's perfect for our farm museum: In earlier times people repaired things and clothes as long as possible. We want to revive this spirit!
