The neckline is ripping apart on this t-shirt and I’d like to repair it with a neat looking visible mend. Does anyone have a suggestion for a simple, but fun technique I could use? I don’t know any crosstitch techniques, but I do have some cool embroidery thread and needle on hand. https://www.reddit.com/r/Visiblemending/

@docpop is there anything fun you can do to match the shirt? Ages ago I mended my goose game shirt with a lil goose

Thanks for all the tips today! This was my first project and I went with @ChurchHatesTucker’s suggestion of using a buttonhole stitch on my shirt. I fixed three holes and added a few unnecessary flourishes to the silkscreened illustration.

A close up of another section that was repaired using light blue thread.
A silkscreened tshirt that has some added embroidery around parts of the print.
A photo of the front of the t shirt. It says “Blackbird Raum” and shows an illustration of a man in a suit of armor leaping out of the body of a man in business attire.

I am very easily influenced by textile craft videos so I guess I'll be doing this for the foreseeable future.

embroidery to take off stress from the spot between two patches that I didn't want to overlap. It's just a fancier and thicker cotton machine stitching thread, but it's quite pretty.

Why am I hanging around here? #Procrastination. I have to write a French promotional text for myself with trous de mites in meinem Gehirn.

The worst thing is that the topic only exists in English, but some visitors don't like foreign languages. 🙄 How do I tell them ... about my workshop for #VisibleMending! Je travaille sur la définition succincte en français. :clippy:

In our Sunday animations in the #culturalHeritage centre, I finished my #visibleMending project: a #secondHand jacket with a completely scuffed collar. For a better look I fixed 2 more patches. All people were very curious. Then the reactions:
⭕️ I would never dare to wear s'th with patches.
⭕️ I never had the time (but they have time for TV, social media etc.) @visiblemending @sewing

#textileArt #repair #repairvintageclothes #patches #patchwork #sewing #upcycling #FastFashionSucks #jacket

The collar in detail. Because the collar ends were different lengths, it was difficult to find symmetry. I started symmetrically at the centre back and then used different motifs on the left (flowers) and right (chicken) to conceal it.

I was rummaging through old photos and found this testimony of how I started (and then got hooked on) . Moths had eaten holes in my favourite jumper. I was furious and swore revenge with a needle. Since I couldn't embroider properly or be accurate, I "needle-painted" yarn moths. Today, everyone thinks the jumper is an expensive designer piece. 🤭

O repaired the holes and stitched intuitively on other places, too, to make the jumper more joyful. Here in pink.
Sometimes I embroidered rough curves between the holes like the flight trajectories of moths in a comic. Here in bright yellow.

Does anyone have examples of on knit fabrics (like jersey)? I know you can darn knitted items, but that is not what I'm thinking about. T-shirt material is what I'm talking about.

lia_pas,
@lia_pas@vis.social avatar

@artcollisions I usually use patches with sashiko on jersey. I’ll try to find some photos

lia_pas,
@lia_pas@vis.social avatar

@artcollisions The leaves are embroidered over holes in the first photo, and there’s a lightweight patch behind each leafy area. The heart is on wool, but would work on jersey too.

I want to learn how to do but I suck at teaching myself new so I want to take an in person class & the only ones near me start at $100+.

So yeah, got any recommendations for learning how to mend clothing in fun ways? Sigh. I see if I can get a book out from the library.

18+ Heidiknits,
@Heidiknits@mastodon.social avatar

Bought myself 2 goodies- needles & a chalk pencil (photo below). I already have or can borrow the rest of what I need from friends. Also got 2 books on mending at the library. I'm curious to know how I'm going to do with this. Some crafts I'm a natural at, others I struggle with.

Today's practice. 🌠 This was fun. I may do this to a pair of jeans I actually wear. Lol. Does it look ok?

Photo is a scrap of blue denim with 3 stars & a crescent moon stitched in off white silk thread. 3 rows of straight stitches connect them all. I think I may like doing (which I have little knowledge of) vs . I'm going to keep practicing both.

Off to work now.

@renwillis Yes! learning a bit about Swiss darning now that better resembles the knitted fabric, but I'm really enjoying the mini-weaving

@im “mini-weaving”, perfect description. It looks amazing and much more interesting than knits, imo.

But, I’m biased, my career was mostly in woven materials… ;)

As long as you lay the patches following the grain of the garment, you can use any shape you like, but I like using polygons with obtuse and 90 degree angles. The corners are easier to turn under and it's a slightly more organic shape than squares. I just use old scraps.

If you use a small enough stitch you can just trim out the inside, but don't cut a hole in the NEW patch like I did, had to put another patch on the patch. 😂

A very close up photo of a fresh patch and Sini showing the small hole she cut into it while trimming away the reverse. Silly mistake, do not do this! She's holding it with thumb and forefinger, the latter poking through the hole.
The site of the previous photo, now with yet another patch and another patch sewn on. In this photo there are a full eight different patches of different size and shape, as well as a very nice little embroidered plant.

@sinituulia It's just sooo pretty and esthetically pleasing! 😻😻😻

🧵 1/ A thread about the crazy project of planning an stand in only 3 days!

Procrastinators have one strength: they really come into their own under time pressure! I stood in for an exhibitor at the Fibreart Festival at extremely short notice. I didn't have any or material for the stand. I have to set it up on Thursday, and I still have umpteen appointments beforehand. What the hell can I do?

I’m in the middle of doing some visible mending on my well used sun hat.
Just some veins to finish on the dark green leaves.

: close up of three dark green and one light green cloth leaves stitched onto the top of a muddy green hat. The stitches holding the leaves on are in the shape of the veins on leaves. One leaf has not been finished and the cotton ends are not sown in.

A question for menders: when/how do you decide if the fabric of a much-mended garment is worn too thin to be worth mending again (and it's therefore time for deconstruction/repurposing/compost etc)?
#mending #VisibleMending

NatureMC,
@NatureMC@mastodon.online avatar

@DMakarios In a somewhat brutal way: I carefully (!) pull the fabric in opposite directions in several places with both hands. If holes or tears form everywhere, it's not worth it.
Then I cut the Visible Mending into pieces that I use for art journals or as patches. (I don't compost because of some toxins for soil life/microplastics).

1/2 Next time in our cultural heritage centre: Pomme Fripe.Just delicious! 🍎 🍟
You bring six good used clothes and can exchange them for up to six other pieces. Or you just give your used clothes and drink a coffee, talk with others.

I'm happy that this idea exists in #Alsace now and I'm so curious to get to know the woman who founded it: Veronique Yim https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1370049143886906
This is the world which connects to my #visibleMending virus I want to infect people with! 🥰

#secondHand #slowFashion

NatureMC,
@NatureMC@mastodon.online avatar

2/2 BTW, the idea is not new - nowadays, you find it in most cities. What's new: We bring it from the European capital #Strasbourg to a very rural region in a nature park, into a village with only 920 inhabitants. https://www.maison-rurale.fr/events/pomme-fripe-club-echange-de-vetements/
It's perfect for our farm museum: In earlier times people repaired things and clothes as long as possible. We want to revive this spirit!
