Need some bird help!

My 6 year old says he saw a kiwibird, but we live in Oregon, USA. I'm trying to find similarly shaped birds to show him so we can figure out what it was but although we loved the woodcock dance videos (thanks Mom!) they don't live on this coast. Any other ideas?

Boosts great if you've got birder friends who might have good ideas!

Any / folks have a clear understanding of why Stellar Jay seem to pick up and mimic predator calls?

I think our Stellar Jay is making Osprey noises now? She was doing Red Tailed Hawk noises last year.

honey what kind of rough crowd are you hanging out with when you migrate

@glassbottommeg
Our Blue Jays will mimic various hawks around here. I wonder if it serves as a warning when one of those hawks are near?

glassbottommeg,
@glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

@Puck I think it's more that they're being jerks and trying to scare off competition from the snacks I've laid out? Though sometimes they just seem really proud of their calls.

I'm completely fascinated by the activity surrounding the bird feeder, which has been out for a month, tops. They all fled when the lawn mower came through and for about an hour afterwards. No birds in sight, then Mr Cardinal stands on top of the patio umbrella and sings in each direction. Not only does his lady show up, but all the fox sparrows and chickadees. He gave the all clear for all the birds

Today I have seen a pair of downy woodpeckers, and the female working on her nest hole one tree over from a red-naped sapsucker DIY gent!

Well, maybe not a gent despite his landlordly behavior toward nuthatches. Would a gentleman have to do with his mate where I could see?! 😱 :sapsucker: :sapsucker:

Down at the Deschutes River today in Central Oregon, I saw no Canada geese until this big placid bend in the river, where we saw about 7, all adults.

Then as we’re standing there hoping the resident trumpeter swan will come back out from the trees on the opposite bank, this couple of adult geese swim out of nowhere with EVERY BABY GOOSE.

I swear somehow all the other geese must have landed this one couple with babysitting because they can’t possibly have TWENTY-TWO GOSLINGS!

@skinnylatte Nice. The blue heron is the city bird here and we see a number of them (if you go to the woods). Otherwise it is just sea gulls.

josh,

Birding and Bletchley Park with @chrisjrn 🥰 A wonderful way to spend an afternoon! At least 9 new lifers, first time in Europe since I got into birding: European Robin, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Eurasian Blue Tit, Eurasian Blackbird, Common Chiffchaff (love that name), Common Chaffinch, Common Wood-Pigeon, and a Eurasian Magpie.

A walking path winds around to the left, toward the mansion at Bletchley Park. The path is flanked by lush green lawns and trees.
Ornate brick buildings surrounding the old recreational areas of Bletchley Park.
A couple of old posters warning Bletchley Park staggers to be mindful of what they say. Don't forget, the walls have ears! Careless talk costs lives! They exclaim.

@josh @chrisjrn magpies are the best. Okay, maybe after blackbirds.

Short Face Long Beak

I want a bird who's the queen scolopacid,
I want a bird who knows her niche.
I want a bird who's hell-bent onward,
Racing the storm 'cross the Solomon reach.
I want a bird with the right adaptations,
Who is fast, and thorough,
As she probes her mudflats.
She's been wintering in Auckland,
She's visiting Pohnpei,
She's touring coral atolls and their beach habitats.
I want a bird with a short face
And a loong beak...

Me: OMG a tiny sandpiper! Which kind is it? I’ve forgotten what little I knew about sandpipers last season. What sandpiper? It is SO SMALL, it’s just the smallest possible—

Me, feeling smart: looks up Least Sandpiper 🧐

Sigh I will be taking a break from Cornell's ebird because of their disappointing actions here. If they can't stand against genocide then I cannot in good conscience take part in their projects.

I’ve released 8 e-books about birds and photography.
“Birding 101” is for those new to or curious about birdwatching.
“Merced National Wildlife Refuge” is a love letter to my favorite place.

“...And the Geese Exploded” contains images and essays about birding has impacted my life.
