A Magazine for the Korean Language

This week in

If you are into languages, you are probably familiar with those conversations with your multilingual friends: you take arbitrary elements from the languages you both speak, and randomly squeeze them together into sentences.

That is any regular Monday for the Swiss. Schwyzdüütsch, a.k.a. German is a colorful amalgamation of German, French and Italian.

While living in germany not for long I once had a german friend telling me she build her own closet, so me in reply said 'wow, du bist schlimm!' (when 'slim' in dutch means 'smart')

Her face skewed and she threw a rant but after some explanation we had a good laugh, but yeah, languages can be funny sometimes mixing them up!

Another unique(?) trope in land is this:

When a character is about to reveal something important, like their true identity, they will be interrupted with either:

  1. An emergency.
  2. They're summoned by someone higher.

^_^;;

You eventually get used to it, and expect it is going to happen.

What’s a word or phrase in a language you speak that describes someone who is nervous? Not just nervous about an exam or something but like, you’re at an airport and the person next to you is shuffling anxiously not wanting to miss the boarding announcement even though it’s at least an hour away, and they just can’t stop shuffling? More a way of being.

In Singlish, it’s ‘kan cheong spider’. You can buy a watch with a spider too: https://shopperboard.com/Kan-Cheong-Spider-Watch/product/20

It comes from 紧张

Scientists are using AI to decode whale talk.
“Sperm whale vocalisations are more expressive and structured than previously believed, and built from a repertoire comprising nearly an order of magnitude more distinguishable codas. These results show context-sensitive and combinatorial vocalisation can appear in organisms with divergent evolutionary lineage and vocal apparatus.”

@timrichards that does depend on what the circumstances are though. Like do you just want a yes or no, or is it more that the yes option is exciting and involves a party, in which case Yay! is acceptable ;-)

@bougiewonderland @JillsJoy Grim Reapers or Guides to afterlife are common in all the areas influenced by Buddhism. King Yama controls the underworld and has assistants to bring souls across the bridge to him. Korea gets Buddhism from China around 4thC.

But Neo-Confucianism is much later. Zhu Xi, its main proponent, lived in 12thC. Korea is controlled by Mongol Yuan dynasty for 80 years until 1350 and gets neo-confucianism as state philosophy during that time.

Sometimes I am so dumb
or slow, idk

However, i realized i could step up the #korean aquiring game. If all the kids nowadays can learn englisch by watching youtube and tiktok, i can do it, too!

I am kidding, i knew this before, obviously, that i could watch korean yt videos, but it was mostly frustrating and boring.

But you know what i love? Freaking Booktube!
And it exists in korea, too. Do i care that i only understand like 30%? No, because there are freaking book covers lol

emmaaum,
@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

@bookstardust Learning it in context is so important too. My brain just doesn't retain vocab from drills or lists anymore but it will latch onto words + particles in Thai series so this is how I'm learning. Slow but it works and I'm bypassing the urge to translate into English because I'm learning it in context.

I'm glad you've found an additional way to learn too. Good luck with your study :)

Word Of The Day: Defenestration

(from Neo-Latin de fenestrā) 1. The act of throwing someone or something out of a window. 2. A swift dismissal or expulsion (as from a political party or office).

The term was coined around the time of an incident in Prague Castle in the year 1618.

Something I love telling people is that the Mandarin euphemism for ‘being horny’ is ‘I ate your tofu / I want to eat your tofu / they ate my tofu’. I feel like we should popularize that in pop culture. Like, you hear that in TV shows (mainly Taiwanese but also sometimes mainland Chinese)

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

我让他吃我的豆腐!wo rang ta chi wo de dou fu = I let them eat my tofu

Can mean actual letting someone eat my tofu dish, or other things.

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

Can also have consent implications. ‘Did he eat your tofu? Did you want that?’

"Bilingual Mandarin and English speakers living in Singapore also showed a preference for left to right mental time mapping over right to left mental mapping. But [..] also quicker to react to future oriented pictures if the future button was located below the past button – in line with Mandarin. Indeed, this also suggests that bilinguals may have two different views of time's direction – particularly if they learn both languages from an early age. "

@skinnylatte ok whoa, so I haven’t read this yet (edit just did) but this reminds me of my own experience that I struggle to communicate… when I imagine the order of the days in my mind’s eye the days progress from right to left, the opposite direction in most calendars I’ve seen. Languages that read from right to left also make intuitive sense to me even though I’m a native English speaker… this looks like a really interesting article!!

Most of us make a moral and practical distinction between illegal and "illegal" activities. The latter being common activities objectively against some agreed upon law, but considered acceptable by most of society, and in most situations.

Examples being driving 71 in a 70km/hr zone, no-trace wildcamping deep in a forest, and taking one flower seed from a natural reserve.

Does the English language have a good single word descriptor for "illegal" activities?

Pepijn,
@Pepijn@mastodon.online avatar

@NeadReport I'm not sure. Misdeed still implies crossing a commonly accepted moral threshold?

NeadReport,
@NeadReport@vivaldi.net avatar

@Pepijn Most words imply more than one meaning. Within the context of your question, I'd go with #1 above. But it depends on how you intend to use the word you are looking for.
