It’s #NewstodonFriday — such a shame it’s been a slow news week! Just to refresh your memories, this is a day to feature work from newsrooms with an active presence in the #Fediverse. If you like what you see in the (long!) thread below, follow the profiles and boost their stories. If you’re a journo or newsroom that we don’t know about or if there’s a newsroom you’d love to put on our radar, please let us know in the comments below.
@themarkup reports on how Chinese migrants are following step-by-step instructions on Douyin, the equivalent of TikTok, in order to immigrate to the United States via Central South America. These include tips on clearing your chat history, bribing law enforcement officers and more. On arrival in the US as asylum seekers, they find a reality they were unprepared for.
What’s your perception of a gig worker? Most are relatively young, but @restofworld spoke to 50 who are aged between 50 and 75 as part of its Graying Gig Workers series. Maureen Zephora Khumalo from Johannesburg, South Africa, told Rest of World that friends laugh at her for doing a young people’s job, but “with harsh economic conditions and my children out of jobs, I [may] even work until my eighties because no one can give me money for free.” https://restofworld.org/2024/aging-global-gig-workers/
Dear all Canadians and also all Fediverse Citizens!
Please boost and sign (name and place please) this open letter that will be sent to the Parliament of Canada. This is a followup to #e4769 petition which is now awaiting a formal response from Government. This Open letter will be sent on Monday June 3rd to the Speaker of the House of Commons and other critical officers and Ministers to encourage a positive response to the petition.
In the words of Fatboy Slim, "we've come a long long way together." Here, @miaq breaks down Flipboard's federation journey so far.
"We could [federate Flipboard] with a quick flip of the switch but we’ve chosen to act more intentionally," she writes. "We’re taking measured steps to test, learn, and ensure that everything we’re doing stays true to our values and those of the fediverse. Maintaining quality is top of the list."

So the account export feature packs up your content and account and creates a nice little archive to dl and upload to the new instance.
Ok.
So where does that file live when the user's content is on object storage and exceeds the server's local disk space?
The docs don't bring that up. The way I see it the export feature could brick a server.
Wednesday next week (June 5th) at 9:00am pacific, we are going to do another Fediverse Developer Network meetup.
You are all invited, particularly if you are a #developer new to ActivityPub and the #fediverse, or if you have an existing implementation and are interested in the first round of test results from @feditest!
