I'm completely fascinated by the activity surrounding the bird feeder, which has been out for a month, tops. They all fled when the lawn mower came through and for about an hour afterwards. No birds in sight, then Mr Cardinal stands on top of the patio umbrella and sings in each direction. Not only does his lady show up, but all the fox sparrows and chickadees. He gave the all clear for all the birds #birding#backYardBirds
(Actually, this is a fledgling, and although chattery as ever still very skittish. The first year I got serious about watching my birds, I panicked when all the chickadees vanished in March and April. Then I realized they were busy making more chickadees.)
I love the critters that congregate around our house. It seems like we are on the wildlife super highway on some days.
I thought Summer might scare them off, but the quail can see that she is usually restricted to her front acre.
She sits super still and watches from the other side of the gate. They totally ignore her.
She is a good dog letting them be, so I can enjoy them too. #BackyardBirds
The Hooded Orioles have returned — I heard their loud chatter in the neighborhood this morning. Here's a photo of a male (seems like he's aware of his good looks, isn't he?😅)
The quail don't mind the rain and are hanging around our house by the dozens lately. I counted over forty this morning, but they appeared to be two different coveys converging on us at the same time.
They are beautiful.
Lately, they are competing with the seasonal arrival of pigeons for the grain the ducks leave behind. #BackyardBirds
A whole passel of California Valley quail out side our kitchen window. They were running in and out of the shadows.
Summer will be heading outside soon, and the quail will head for greener pastures. #BackyardBirds
Summer was watching out the window, saying this place is for the birds. I didn't realize she was serious until I took a look for myself. #BackyardBirds
Learning how to be hawks 😍 I’m not sure what happened to their mother but these three hawks, who hatched in my pine, seemed to be left alone to learn everything about adult hawk life. One of the three decided he would teach the others and it was the most adorable thing to watch. Here they are attentively watching a lesson. #backyardbirds#birdwatching#birds#raptor#hawk#nature#wildlife#birdphotography
