One often overlooked benefit of municipal broadband is keeping local dollars close to home and using the extra $$ to make community investments

Check out what Westfield MA is doing thanks to the success of its municipal telecom utility Whip City Fiber

The "profits" the network has made are now being used to build new track and athletic fields for the entire community. Click link below for our story

A new published a few days ago is evaluating the of Low- orbit broadband .

The authors find that over 5 years, the project would emit between ~0.5 and 1 tonne CO2eq per subscriber, and up to ~3 t CO2eq / subscriber for 's project. Those values are 31-91 times HIGHER than eq. terrestrial .

Officials in Loveland and Timnath, Colo ratify an Inter-Governmental Agreement that will bring ubiquitous, affordable high-speed Internet access to yet another community in the Centennial State

An increasing number of Colorado cities and towns are embracing municipal after years of frustration with the inadequate, high-priced service from the region’s monopoly incumbents

Millions of Americans are set to lose their home internet access, as the funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program is about to run out.

With lawmakers yet to approve the new funding required, @theverge calls for a permanent solution for universal broadband access.

Greedy bastards.

A anonymous group of Internet service providers that won government grants for rural are asking the for more money or an "amnesty window" in which they could give up grants without penalty.

A different group urged the FCC to reject the request, saying that telcos that win grants by pledging to build networks at a low cost are "gaming" the system by seeking more money afterward.

SpaceX's massive Falcon Heavy Rocket successfully launched Hughes' massive Jupiter 3 satellite to geosynchronous transfer orbit last night more than 28000km up in space. That should mean better rural broadband in the 4th quarter with quadrupled download speeds. I'm guessing that'll cost a lot more, though.

While most may say "so what?" this is a huge blow to people in areas. Lack of means streaming is out. And netflix already put local rental places out of business. The future for them is an entertainment desert.

My fibre/adsl #broadband is perpetually broken at the line/exchange level so in a fit of pique, I ordered Three’s #4G broadband as it’s cheap to use as a backup.

24h in and it’s been so good I’ve switched it to my primary. Even in my below average signal area we’re getting a solid 40mbit/s both ways and for just £20/month all in - I am a convert!

A massive coalition of more than 300 broadband policy experts and organizations have written a letter to the U.S. government.

The letter warns that smaller broadband providers, nonprofits, and municipalities will be elbowed out of an historic $42.5 billion broadband grant program without some notable changes to program rules.

The FT is reporting that Altnets are having some trouble competing with & in some cases are cutting back development or merging (consolidation);

however, other than mentioning one Altnet that has 'community' in its name, the analysis misses the utilisation of community effort to bring to 'uneconomic' areas;

(our local community project) has much higher % take-up than the altnets, not least due to its business model.

FT needs to be a little less myopic on broadband!

reinstates policy after era cancellation. By following the law Congress wrote for modern internet-access service, FCC is reestablishing its federal oversight of the service that connects everyone.

providers will need to stop playing favorites or links to websites they has no commercial deals with. Measure now likely to be challenged in court by corporate & cable communications giants.

The Affordable Connectivity Program was a landmark piece of U.S. government legislation passed in 2021 that aimed to make it easier for people to afford an internet connection in their homes. Today it all comes to an end, leaving an estimated 23 million households — roughly one in six — at risk of losing broadband access, widening the digital divide.

Despite pleas from the Biden administration and several advocacy groups to save the program, it has now officially lapsed. So what’s next? @WIRED has more.

I'd take Allison Kirkby (CEO/BT) more seriously in her complaints that the regulatory environment of the UK (contrasted with Scandinavia) has led to a lack of world-class broadband infrastructure if I hadn't had for ten years world class broadband delivered via a community broadband project (one of many in rural England).

Its not the regulatory environment that's the problem its BT's quasi monopoly position & its hatred of its customers that is the problem!

It involves "pocket parks," murals, free community WiFi, and a proposed open-access fiber network

So as I have predicted, the US Supreme Court is going to have to get involved to settle the Net Neutrality debate one way or another.

Either it holds up or they can kill consumer protections for a generation. We may not have to wait long to find out...
