We have sent to X a formal request for information under the Digital Services Act.
It follows indications of the alleged spreading of illegal content and disinformation, in particular the spreading of terrorist and violent content and hate speech.
We are investigating X's compliance with the #DSA, including:
Policies and practices regarding notices on illegal content
Complaint handling
Risk assessment measures to mitigate the risks identified.
From now on, the Digital Services Act becomes enforceable on all online platforms in the EU.
The #DSA empowers users, EU countries and platforms to:
⏩ Counter illegal content, goods, and services
⏩ Ban sensitive data for targeted ads
⏩ Protect minors and their personal data
⏩ Inform users about ads and their sponsors
⏩ And more
We've opened formal proceedings against Meta regarding the protection of minors on Facebook and Instagram.
The systems of both platforms, including their algorithms, may stimulate behavioural addictions in children, as well as create so-called 'rabbit-hole effects’.
Today, we step up our enforcement actions against Microsoft.
After not having received an answer to our request for information from 14 March regarding specific risks stemming from Bing's generative AI features, Microsoft has now until 27 May to provide it or could face fines and periodic penalties.
Bing may pose risks linked to generative AI, such as so-called ‘hallucinations’, deepfakes, and the automated manipulation of services that can mislead voters.
We want digital platforms to protect freedom of speech and a healthy, well-informed public debate.
The Digital Services Act set clear rules for this. It is now time to implement them.
Today, we launched the #DSA Transparency Database, a first-of-its-kind initiative that makes content moderation decisions by very large online platforms operating in the #EU accessible.
Users can view statistics, search for statements of reasons, and download data and its source #code.
⚠️ Opening of formal proceedings against TikTok under the Digital Services Act.
We are concerned that TikTok has launched the "Task and Reward Program" of TikTok Lite without conducting a diligent assessment of the risks it entails.
We suspect an infringement of the #DSA, and we consider that there are risks of serious damage for the mental health of users.
Therefore, we have communicated to TikTok our intention to suspend the TikTok Lite rewards programme in the EU.
Looks like we don't need laws after all for platforms to opportunistically suppress political user content: In 🇫🇷 #France, a #Snapchat#lobbyist admitted in a parliamentary hearing that the company was "proud" to have collaborated "hand in hand with the interior ministry" to make sure only user content critical of the mass protests was shown on #SnapMaps.
Amazon, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, Zalando and Bing.
These are the initial seven platforms to have released the first-ever transparency reports under the Digital Service Act. The remaining platforms are expected to publish their reports by 6 November.
The reports, scheduled for publication every six months, ensure transparency and accountability over content moderation online, including:
The EU has issued a warning to Elon Musk over the disinformation about the Hamas attack on Israel, including fake news and “repurposed old images”, on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The letter arrives less than two months after sweeping new laws regulating content on social media came into force under the EU Digital Services Act.
If X doesn't comply it can face a fine of 6% of its global revenues or a total blackout in the EU.
Are you aware of harmful practices by companies under the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act?
We've launched whistleblower tools to report violations of obligations by Very Large Online Platforms, Search Engines and gatekeepers under the #DSA and #DMA.
In the many discussions about #threads promise to add #activitypub support, regulations such as the #DMA and the #DSA, as well as the Canadian Online News Act have come up.
In this piece I dive deep into the specific articles of the Acts to see if they might impact Meta's decision making.
On #WorldPressFreedomDay, we stand together to defend the fundamental right to press freedom and media independence – and to honour those who have sacrificed their lives to bring us the truth.
But we don't just pay lip service to this ideal. With the European Media Freedom Act, the #DSA and the fight against SLAPPs, we're committed to protecting media professionals.
Let's promote a society where the free flow of information is valued and defended.
Discusses some of the pending Terms of Use changes, new "systemic risk and mitigation" obligations, and looking ahead to future legislation in other countries.
#twitter#dsa
We've opened formal proceedings against Meta regarding the protection of minors on Facebook and Instagram.

We have introduced new whistleblower tools to help employees and other insiders report harmful practices of Very Large Online Platforms or Search Engines under the DSA and violations of obligations by gatekeepers under the DMA.
These tools are empowering whistleblowers to share relevant information anonymously, in any EU official language and format, from reports to data metrics and internal research.
🇩🇪 75 Jahre #Grundgesetz – und #CDU-Frau von der Leyen höhlt es über die EU Schritt für Schritt aus. #Zensursula’s EU-Kommission hat in den letzten fünf Jahren auf den Weg gebracht:
🇬🇧 Ursula von der Leyen has been continuously eroding our fundamental rights. In the past five years, her EU Commission proposed:
❌the end of private messaging and secure encryption #ChatControl
❌introducing unique citizen identifiers #eID
❌a working group to resurrect indiscriminate #DataRetention#EUGoingDark
❌essentially unchanged online tracking & micro-targeting practices #DSA#politicalAds
❌legalising #Europol's unlawful bulk data collection practices
❌ultra-fast cross-border online content removals without court orders #TERREG
❌allowing for #biometricMassSurveillance in the #AIAct
❌granting industry access to our #healthdata without our consent #EHDS
Von der Leyen’s Europe needs digital freedom fighters! #Pirates
"It’s not just Big Tech that’s playing for all the marbles - it’s also the systems of democratic control and accountability. If Apple can sabotage the DMA’s insistence on taking away its veto over its customers’ software choices, that will spill over into the US Department of Justice’s case over the same issue, as well as the cases in Japan and South Korea."
