A blessed Eid al-Adha to all who celebrate.

Based on an annotation in an Islamicate manuscript that was acquired in the Caribbean, in 1773, an enslaved West African person in Léogâne (Haiti) wrote an Arabic charm in the presence of Pierre DuSimitiere. The talismanic charm is “mostly comprised of several repeated verses from the Qurʾān [with] a few words in Soninke.”

Article on the black covering of the Kabaa. Fun fact for Germans: "Approximately 120kg of silver & gold threads that come from Germany are used to emboss the Quranic verses on the Kiswah. "
So part of the Kabaa is 'Made in Germany' 😁

🇮🇳 🇺🇸 State Visit | AP Headline: "Biden promotes human rights as Modi says 'absolutely no space for discrimination' during state visit"

Notably, the word "Muslim" doesn't appear until para 21, after a lotta yada yada about democracy, close ties and details of multibilliion-dollar investments in and the manufacture of US military hardware there.

"The World's Largest Democracy" isn't really any more, and MSM is content to gloss right over it.

"‘A sense of betrayal’: liberal dismay as Muslim-led US city bans Pride flags - Many liberals celebrated when Hamtramck, Michigan, elected a Muslim-majority council in 2015 but a vote to exclude LGBTQ+ flags from city property has soured relations

In 2015, many liberal residents in Hamtramck, Michigan, celebrated as their city attracted international attention for becoming the first in the United States to elect a Muslim-majority city council.

They viewed the power shift and diversity as a symbolic but meaningful rebuke of the Islamophobic rhetoric that was a central theme of then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign.

This week many of those same residents watched in dismay as a now fully Muslim and socially conservative city council passed legislation banning Pride flags from being flown on city property that had – like many others being flown around the country – been intended to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

Muslim residents packing city hall erupted in cheers after the council’s unanimous vote, and on Hamtramck’s social media pages, the taunting has been relentless: “Fagless City”, read one post, emphasized with emojis of a bicep flexing."

-controlled city council in greater area votes unanimously to flag. Apparently because + people are and oppressing religious people. It doesn’t matter what religion your fundamentalist and queerphobic prejudice supposedly stems from - Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, QAnon - is intolerance and hate is hate. https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2023/06/city-votes-unanimously-to-ban-pride-flag-to-respect-the-religious-rights-of-our-citizens/

adamjcook,

@imstilljeremy Just speaking for myself here...

In a moment of reflection, I think that I totally missed the mark in my responses to your comment here on this.

hate is an outsized issue.

It is routinely ignored and, in fact, capitalized on.

And I believe that I should have been sensitive to that and acknowledged that.

I have some additional reflection and growth to do on this.

If anyone can recommend a history of the last 20 years in the written by a practicing , that is, not a Western style liberal, please do. The books that make it into US libraries tend to favour secular “democracy” following the Western neoliberal model as the solution to all ills, even those written by people from the region.

I don't know why I thought that it would be safer for , but the has turned out to be exactly the same as every other corner of the Internet. is like the USA. No for Muslims, and if we complain, then we're part of the problem. also run only one way here. Folks cry for us to support them, but refuse to support us in return.
