Canadian man accused of killing #Muslim family motivated by white nationalism, court hears
Nathaniel Veltman, 22, is facing four charges of murder and one charge of attempted murder after driving his truck into five members of the Afzaal family
Veltman told police that he killed the four members of the Afzaal family, but he has pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He is also facing #muslim charges.
#911 was an unquestionable tragedy. What followed was also awful. When people talk about national unity after #September11, they are rewriting history. It was a time filled with #islamophobia and immense hatred. People took their understandable anger and grief and placed blame on those who didn’t deserve it and the #UnitedStates government took advantage of our mourning to unjust start wars and restrict freedoms of its own citizens. These results can’t be disentangled from that day.
Dozens of girls who turned up for school in France on Monday wearing abayas in defiance of a ban on the Muslim garment were sent home when they refused to remove them.
The abaya, an over-garment covering the body from shoulders to feet that some Muslim women wear, was banned in schools by the French government last month.
The government says the abaya constitutes a display of religious affiliation, banned at schools under a 2004 law.

Ap. 10 % of Georgia’s population is #Muslim, and until 1951 there were 2 mosques in Tbilisi. Then the Blue Mosque was demolished by the Communist government. Seeing that the Shia community had nowhere to go, Jumah Mosque opened its doors to them, making it one of the only mosques in the world where the two sects worship together. Until 1996, a black curtain was used to divide the mosque between Sunnis and Shiites during prayer, but today, the two pray side by side. #TIL
I'm asking this of Muslims in the Western countries. Have women ever offered you their hand? What was your reaction? What was her reaction to your reaction?

I like nerding with notes, languages, philosophy, reading non-fic, #solarpunk, #Dimension20, exploring non-d&d #rpg systems, waterfalls, playlists, cats. I have an admin job that inspires me to pay attention to intersections of #tech, #climate, #gender, and #rights in the #globalSouth.
This year the Christian anti-abortion group Campaign Life Coalition, organized a National Pride Flag Walk-Out Day on June 1 designed to target Pride month celebrations in public schools.
"It may seem positive that Islam is being discussed by former detractors beyond the prisms of #extremism and #terrorism, but this exchange is part of a growing trend of something more ominous that involves #ideological borrowing in both directions.
Conversely, conservative #male pundits in the West are hosting #Muslim voices on their #podcasts and #shows.
And while these #groups have historically been at loggerheads, the overlaps in their values are also clear in their opposition to #feminism and the #antisemitism that is rife in both #communities."
Mastodon is wild, y'all really got white folks on this site calling Black and Indigenous people colonizers, yet wonder why this place can't keep Black folks.
Complain about it, and folks come at me, telling me that I should just find another instance. It’s #segregation in digital form, especially in light of the fact that I’ve been muted and blocked by at least one entire instance.
"HOW THE HINDU RIGHT-WING IN INDIA IS UNDERMINING MUSLIM IDENTITY THROUGH HERITAGE" by Maitri Dore.
"In service of the myth of a Hindu golden age, the Hindu right-wing is contorting historical facts and attempting to cleanse the built environment of Muslim heritage. Their meddlesomeness is proof of the pudding that heritage is more than simply brick and mortar. It is about the selection and use of these for political purposes. In this scheme then, architecture–by way of claims to mosques, and public space–through its renaming, are merely convenient props that hold up the cherry-picked narrative."
The 1889 Emigration Pass for my Great Great Grandmother who left India to become an indentured labourer on a sugar cane plantation on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean.
Indians were recruited for plantation work after the British 1833 Slavery Abolition Act freed most slaves in the British Empire.
My ancestor stayed in Trinidad at the end of her tenure. Many others did too, giving Trinidad and Tobago its unique population mix.
We live in a world where the burning of a single Quran in Europe generates more outrage by so-called "leaders" in the #Islamic world than the destruction of thousands of #Mosques & the criminalization of nearly all #Muslim#Uyghurs religious & cultural expression in #China
In fact, these same "leaders" will praise the latter.
3/ #Twitter: I started on Twitter in 2009 as a quirky way to exchange ideas and fun with people all over the world, and to possibly promote my business. I never did gain much traction there with business although I made many friends, some of which I met IRL.
The potential for Twitter to be a space for progress became evident with the #ArabSpring in 2011, a thrilling time of getting actual eyewitness news from the ground in the moment it was happening. I loved Twitter through all that and so appreciated every voice speaking out. There had never been anything like that before.
Then the drama deescalated for a few years and I actually thought the site was dying — until 2016. That horrific candidacy anointed Twitter as its media of choice, and suddenly the site was on everyone’s mind again. It was shocking how quickly the site became hateful at that point, but it was also where a huge surge of #activism, especially with marginalized groups, had a space to respond and educate. I came to rely on Twitter for #gay, #Black, #disabled, #Indigenous, #Muslim, #trans voices. I learned a ton.
So that’s what I’ve missed most since I basically abandoned Twitter in November 2022. For the next few months, I established myself on TikTok and Mastodon and had to work hard to recreate some semblance of what I had been using Twitter for. Now, I do not miss Twitter at all. My account is still there so I can keep the name, but it’s dead in the water.
