Mastodon is wild, y'all really got white folks on this site calling Black and Indigenous people colonizers, yet wonder why this place can't keep Black folks.

InayaShujaat,

@BlackAzizAnansi @Karma_J @raddude12 I’ve been run off two instances because my being somehow offended the admins.

Complain about it, and folks come at me, telling me that I should just find another instance. It’s in digital form, especially in light of the fact that I’ve been muted and blocked by at least one entire instance.

My experience is also far from unique.

There are good reasons why the Fediverse is on so many servers:

-It prevents Musk (or anyone!) from buying the network

-If a server is badly run, you can move to another without losing your followers

-Far more human admins on the Fediverse, moderation tends to be better

-If one server goes down, the others still work

-Each server makes its own rules

-Anyone can set up a server

-Lots of server types to choose from, and they connect to each other

More details at https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers/

@feditips @gentrifiedrose There was a large, thriving community on Twitter. It doesn’t exist here. Muslim voices get snuffed out.

adamjcook,

@imstilljeremy Just speaking for myself here...

In a moment of reflection, I think that I totally missed the mark in my responses to your comment here on this.

hate is an outsized issue.

It is routinely ignored and, in fact, capitalized on.

And I believe that I should have been sensitive to that and acknowledged that.

I have some additional reflection and growth to do on this.

1/ I thought this might be a good moment to talk about how I use .

Full disclosure: I have a brain, so these ideas might not work for everyone. Take the best, leave the rest.

This thread will cover , , , , and last but best, .

H2O,

3/ : I started on Twitter in 2009 as a quirky way to exchange ideas and fun with people all over the world, and to possibly promote my business. I never did gain much traction there with business although I made many friends, some of which I met IRL.

The potential for Twitter to be a space for progress became evident with the in 2011, a thrilling time of getting actual eyewitness news from the ground in the moment it was happening. I loved Twitter through all that and so appreciated every voice speaking out. There had never been anything like that before.

Then the drama deescalated for a few years and I actually thought the site was dying — until 2016. That horrific candidacy anointed Twitter as its media of choice, and suddenly the site was on everyone’s mind again. It was shocking how quickly the site became hateful at that point, but it was also where a huge surge of , especially with marginalized groups, had a space to respond and educate. I came to rely on Twitter for , , , , , voices. I learned a ton.

So that’s what I’ve missed most since I basically abandoned Twitter in November 2022. For the next few months, I established myself on TikTok and Mastodon and had to work hard to recreate some semblance of what I had been using Twitter for. Now, I do not miss Twitter at all. My account is still there so I can keep the name, but it’s dead in the water.

Dozens of girls who turned up for school in France on Monday wearing abayas in defiance of a ban on the Muslim garment were sent home when they refused to remove them.

The abaya, an over-garment covering the body from shoulders to feet that some Muslim women wear, was banned in schools by the French government last month.

The government says the abaya constitutes a display of religious affiliation, banned at schools under a 2004 law.

"HOW THE HINDU RIGHT-WING IN INDIA IS UNDERMINING MUSLIM IDENTITY THROUGH HERITAGE" by Maitri Dore.

"In service of the myth of a Hindu golden age, the Hindu right-wing is contorting historical facts and attempting to cleanse the built environment of Muslim heritage. Their meddlesomeness is proof of the pudding that heritage is more than simply brick and mortar. It is about the selection and use of these for political purposes. In this scheme then, architecture–by way of claims to mosques, and public space–through its renaming, are merely convenient props that hold up the cherry-picked narrative."

Seeing that the Shia community had nowhere to go, Jumah Mosque opened its doors to them, making it one of the only mosques in the world where the two sects worship together. Notably, the word "Muslim" doesn't appear until para 21, after a lotta yada yada about democracy, close ties and details of multibilliion-dollar investments in #India and the manufacture of US military hardware there.

"The World's Largest Democracy" isn't really any more, and MSM is content to gloss right over it.

Based on an annotation in an Islamicate manuscript that was acquired in the Caribbean, in 1773, an enslaved West African person in Léogâne (Haiti) wrote an Arabic charm in the presence of Pierre DuSimitiere. The talismanic charm is “mostly comprised of several repeated verses from the Qurʾān [with] a few words in Soninke.”
