: "Researchers have devised an attack against nearly all virtual private network applications that forces them to send and receive some or all traffic outside of the encrypted tunnel designed to protect it from snooping or tampering.

TunnelVision, as the researchers have named their attack, largely negates the entire purpose and selling point of VPNs, which is to encapsulate incoming and outgoing Internet traffic in an encrypted tunnel and to cloak the user’s IP address. The researchers believe it affects all VPN applications when they’re connected to a hostile network and that there are no ways to prevent such attacks except when the user's VPN runs on Linux or Android. They also said their attack technique may have been possible since 2002 and may already have been discovered and used in the wild since then."

Trying in . Sadly they decided to launch with local companies, so even before I started I had low expectations. This is what I found:

  • Signup (Wowow) has no English
  • LG TV app has no language setting, just Japanese.
  • ST:SNW has subs, or dubs.
  • Subs are burn in, no way to remove.
  • Only S01
  • Low quality, no 4k, no DV.
  • Other content older.

So, worse than expected. I'll try again in a year I guess.

Do VPNs Hide Data Usage from ISPs or Cellular Carriers? Yes, but they’re no Magic Bullet

Too many people think just running a VPN will solve all privacy, security, malware, etc problems. A VPN only really does two or three things:

Gets you an IP address that is somewhere else and not associated with your ISP or carrier provided address.

It ...continues

See https://gadgeteer.co.za/do-vpns-hide-data-usage-from-isps-or-cellular-carriers-yes-but-theyre-no-magic-bullet/

MsDropbear425,

@danie10 I began using a decade ago when our then fascist federal misgovernment in Straya threatened to create a new mandatory data retention law [which they subsequently did indeed do, & no subsequent govt has repealed]. I have no intention of stopping this self-defence response. Ofc it also provides me with a global choice for my nightly entertainment streaming leisure, but my primary incentive was & remains that egregious law.

Subsequently, i've also happily availed myself of 's , & most recently, , which together enhance one's in conjunction with VPN.

Other protective measures include in with thousands of custom dynamic filter rules, canvas fingerprint randomising, other stuff per my curated , et al.

I make no claims at all that i am now "safe" as i accept these days that's illusory, yet i still derive comfort from a sense that by my proactivity i've at least made it a little harder for the bastards.

T-Mobile Home Internet is oddly faster with a VPN.

It's over a cellular network, which often has a slower download and faster upload. This implies the bottleneck is in the band (congested tower / network).

Generally speaking, switching to a VPN should make it worse, not better

Yet, the numbers don't lie. I will have great download speeds and normal upload, when using a VPN.

Changing the DNS with or without VPN, doesn't matter, it's always faster with the VPN.

@Linux_Is_Best Why am I not surprised?

They don't like :loading: and I guess they prioritize as to not piss off -customers.

Personally I just stick with actual |s and guaranteed |s instead.

: "The company acquired Onavo, a virtual private network software app, in 2013 for about $US200 million ($292 million) and marketed it to users as a way to “keep you and your data safe” by keeping their personal activity private.

But internal documents prepared by Meta and its subsidiary Facebook Israel suggested Onavo user data was being used for another purpose. One document read: “The best part about these apps ... is that it gives us a sample of users who we are able to know nearly everything they are doing on their mobile device.”

The data, which was aggregated and anonymised, was used to help advertisers “identify local competitors, notice big trends, find overlaps in use, benchmark your performance in significant-margin differences, notice a shift in consumer attention”, the same document added."

A lot of talk about certain VPNs ending port-forwarding and how this affects torrents, but some are making it seem as though it's impossible to torrent without port-forwarding. Anyone care to offer a clearer and pragmatic picture? (I torrent Linux distro iso files, of course...)
