Latest map showing the latest volcanic eruption near Grindavík. It shows how close the lava flow is to town and how the last road into town almost got covered in lava.
It is impressive how the walls have worked so well so far. Hopefully they will continue to keep the lava out!
Grindavík is a town close to my heart. I feel for all those that have had to leave their homes there.
According to geophysicist Magnús Túmi, the current #eruption appears to be the largest in the sequence thusfar, and has now reached 3,2-3,4km in length.
While it started more northerly than the last eruption, the focus has shifted more southward.
Interesting article about Naples IT and the sleeping monster beneath it--a volcanic caldera so large it's difficult to photograph it standing on the Earth because Naples Bay and the city are only part of it.
It's not the same type of magma & gas mix as say the volcanoes in Iceland or Hawaii. They won't get a lot of warning if that caldera abruptly moves. #Volcano
