Well, I thought it was when my son sent it to me from #Iceland today, and then I joked that it might be a new #volcano.
It is, actually, light from a new volcano in the #Reykjanes Peninsula, where all the other action has been.
The son is living (for grad school) on the north side of #Reykjavik (about 25 mi. north of #Grindavík and he said the light in the sky was visible from his apartment. He and his room mate went down to the beach to get a clearer picture.

Wow. People who were camping waiting for the new volcano to erupt were able to capture one of the fissures opening. Remarkable. I’ve wanted to see how this happens for years. Now we have video 🥰
Here's an old pic I took of the snow-capped Llullaillaco #volcano, as seen at #sunset from ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. The volcano itself sits at the border between #Chile and #Argentina. I love the colour contrast between the ochre expanse of the Atacama #Desert and the white #snow covering the volcano!
Following the latest on the new eruption on Reykjanes that started this morning in Iceland.
The lava flow crossed Grindavíkurvegur Road, a primary north-south corridor, and has severed the hot water pipeline that runs from the geothermal plant and provides service to the rest of peninsula.
Areas without hot water include Keflavik International Airport and nearby communities.

#Indonesia’s Mount #Ruang has erupted at least 3X this wk, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people.
On Wed evening, the #volcano’s #eruption shot #ash nearly 70k ft high, possibly spewing aerosols into the #stratosphere, the atmosphere’s second layer.
The #volcano is part of Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province, in the Sangihe Islands archipelago. That puts it ~60 miles NNE of Manado, the province’s capital.
#Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency posted that the situation corresponded to a Level 3 on a 1-4 scale, 4 being the most severe.
In Laingpatehi village, there were reports of ashfall & communication issues. Authorities urged residents & tourists to remain at least 4 km, or 2.5 mi, away from the #volcano.
Satellite imagery depicted a massive #eruption around 8PM local time, which shot ash about 65k to 70k feet high. Roughly 2X the altitude at which commercial aircraft fly.
Workers who constructed protective berms around Grindavik have shared some amazing close-up footage of the lava flow from the new fissure as they attempt to save their heavy machinery.
