In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I want to recommend Japanese-American Kishi Bashi’s song film “Omoiyari.”

It’s described as “a musical journey to understand WWII era Japanese Incarceration, assimilation, and what it means to be a minority in America today.”

The film is streaming on Paramount+ and the record is available on most platforms. Both are amazing.

#art #history: he gives serious hair envy. undisputed king of the quiff, he's deservedly one of france's most revered actors. jean gabin & his bloody barnet (probably) were born #otd in 1904. he was, in his earlier years, a staple of film noir, starring in 'pepe le moko' (featuring #frehel) & in jean renoir's phenomenal 'la grande illusion'. he went on to canoodle with simone signoret in 'le chat'. if you don't know who he is, fix that. #jeanGabin #france #cinema #illustration #film

digital ink drawing of the inestimable french thespian, jean gabin, ubiquitous lung dart protruding elegantly from his unmistakable facehole. pensive - perhaps, perplexed - jean raises his eyebrows at a sight in the distance. there's a soft, golden cream-coloured moon behind him & he wears a striped winter scarf with his french blue duffle. background is french blue.

"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" is out and according to the A.V. Club's Tara Bennett (not usually a fan of prequels), it's good. Here's her review of the movie, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. We want to know: Which of these George Miller movies is your favorite?

Near me there are no cacti large enough that I can use them for textures. On a business trip to Berlin in March, I found a couple of hours to check the Botanical Garden and the desert glasshouse there had these amazing cacti. This is one of the images that came out of it.

What is the most subversive movie ever made?

I want to make the case that its BLADE RUNNER.

We are supposed to think here that Deckard, the cop, the bounty hunter acting on authority, is the good guy.

Only he's not. He's a puppet, a stooge, inauthentic.

The good guys in Blade Runner are the replicants - created, artificial, self-determining, self-actualising, aware of their self-worth, authentic. They fight for their freedom against all comers.

"That's the spirit!"

The Big Cigar review – proof that Hollywood can’t be trusted to tell the stories of Black radicals

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/article/2024/may/17/the-big-cigar-review-huey-p-newton-black-panther-cuba

A timely review of a new film.

This is at least partially because of the FBI’s campaign of sabotage against 20th-century Black leaders, which was so ruthlessly effective that it remains near-impossible to separate the truth from deliberate distortions, or sort these threads into any kind of moral coherence.
