How about a visit to an amazing automotive museum? This one is in Los Angeles, it's called the Petersen and if you're in LA, do put aside a day to go visit this place. Gorgeous building, incredible collection. Buy a pass to enter the Vault, no cameras allowed but you get to see more of their collection, tucked in the basement. All sorts of vehicles!

It's time for another history/museum thread. This one starts in Australia then goes to the Netherlands. It's a long one and it's going to take quite a lot of posts so get comfy.

Hey friends, does anyone know what either of these objects are?
(They were found in a deceased relative's jewelry box.)
Please boost for added eyes, thanks! 😊

The lettering on the object on the left says:
Hadley Made in USA
Both ends open up to 90⁰ and the main body expands and contracts about a centimetre.

A clever person has said that the object in the right is a Writescope telescoping mechanical pencil. Thanks!

My visit to the Ctrl+Alt Museum retrocomputing museum in Pavia, Italy, blew my mind. Why? The hundreds of photos I took speak for themselves, go see them now.

Opened a year and a half ago, the museum is a new and little known geeky gem packed with all sorts of vintage computing hardware and stuff. It's run by a non profit group of passionate collectors, enthusiasts, and makers who also do outreach and education activities.

Today I was restoring a specimen from the Nottingham Natural History Museum's fluid preserved collection. Thisgrass snake was suffering from a severe fungal growth that had formed a plug floating on top of the fluid and smothered the specimen inside. Nasty stuff!

Here are shots showing the same snake and jar before and after I removed the fungus, cleaned the snake and jar, and changed the fluid.

I'm feeling proud of this one.

The same snake and jar, but the fungus has been removed, the jar cleaned, and the fluid replaced.

I think the Internet Archive has about a year or less before being closed down. They face multiple lawsuits demanding better collection management - but they have little or no curation at all.

Just go look for yourself: Taylor Swift albums jumbled up with console games, copied blu rays and random video with no tags - a real museum has direction, purpose and the IA needs to staff up and stop being a huge dumpster of random shit. Or the inevitable will happen.

We have in . Nowadays I don't buy anything I don't really need. Today I bought three Nanso night dresses that are warm in the winter, and a card for a year. In Finland it's possible to buy a museum card that gives you access to almost every museum in Finland for a year. It costs 64 euros (69,93 USD) today.

A colorful night dress made of cotton. It has for example white flowers and black lines.
A design night dress with black and purple.
Black Friday discount - a museum card only 64 euros today

Anderhalf uur goed besteed.

So I'm back from my trip. I am severely disappointed by all of the statues having been vandalised. The only intact phalloi I could find were on a relief and a modern reconstruction. I DID meet a beautiful statue of , though! She even still has a visible slit! I will share the images on Friday, the Day of Aphrodite.
As a sneak peek, enjoy this beautiful bum!

Warning: This post is about to make you feel very old.

Think for a moment where you watched the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.

Well, one of the busses from those games is now on display at the Sydney Bus Museum.

But wait, what is a bus from the Sydney Olympics doing in a transport museum?

Well, because the 2000 Olympics were held almost a quarter of a century ago.

I did warn you this post would make you feel old.

Some thoughts on the British Museum theft: first, I didn't talk to any of the (many) journalists who emailed me about it, partially because I was boarding a long haul flight. Mostly this was because last week there was not enough info to comment, and only enough info to speculate wildly. I'm not up for speculating wildly without facts. I can, however, now speak generally about a few things: 1/
