These beautiful Texas red firewheels or Indian blankets with some horse mint wildflowers mixed in makes for a perfect sunset over these field of wildflowers below this lovely pecan tree.

I feel in interests of making it clear that firearms are not allowed in National Parks this guy should have also lost firearms license.

Also the fact this happened at all pisses me off. I don't need to be running into gun toting people on busy mountain trails.

40 years ago today: The Appalachian Trail passed a massive rock cliff with jagged projections overhanging the trail. Tiny springs were trickling down the face, staining the rock black where it was not covered with vivid green moss. A three-inch-long centipede was crawling along the ledge.

Bumpy week ahead. But coming across these photos of banana slugs made me feel better, so maybe they’ll help your week, too! From my trip to the Redwoods State & National Parks in Northern California, May 2023.

Photo: Long narrow banana slugs shining in the sun.
Photo: Long, narrow banana slug, light but bright yellow and stretched out.
Photo: Short, thick yellow banana slug with black splotches.

Chatting with a work colleague yesterday. He had just come back from a trip to a couple of the National Parks in California. Loved the trees, hated the crowded buses. He had to stand, which hurt his knees. He says there are too few park staff. When I suggested that years of underfunding might have something to do with that, his immediate response was “There are no workers because Biden pays people to stay at home”.

Wrangell - St. Elias Nat'l Park. What a gorgeous day that was.

Zabriskie Point, Death Valley. 103 degrees wasn’t as uncomfortable as I expected, probably because the air was so dry.

Epic day biking the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Bikes are allowed before the road opens to cars, which will be any day now. Absolutely spectacular. 3200 ft elevation gain in 16 miles from Avalanche Trail head to Logan Pass. Going up is some work, but the ride back is all downhill.

View of the pass from road on way up. Steep mountain peaks flanked by lush green bushes and trees below timber line.
Wide angle shot of valley leading up to Logan Pass.
Beginning of the trip along the river. No cars!! “Garden Wall” formation ahead and above of us.

I love camping and I love getting up while everyone else is still sleeping. Camera in hand I head out in search of the first light. This is the Great White Throne in Zion National Park just as the sun was beginning to rise. The throne stands in contrast being made mostly of white Navajo limestone.

Let me show you one of Utah's natural wonders: Arches National Park. It's one of those iconic National Parks in the American West where you feel overwhelmed by the creative power of nature.
