Norway’s 🇳🇴 KLP, & Britain’s 🇬🇧 LGIM, are the latest investors to disclose they'll vote against Woodside’s climate report. Critics described #Woodside’s strategy as overly reliant on offsets & not aligned with the #ParisAgreement ❌ https://buff.ly/4b7nbAf
Our Paris Maligned II scorecard has a scale of A-H. A = potentially aligned with the #ParisAgreement. H is 'least aligned' & reflects strategy with a 2.4C, or worse, outcome. BP had the best grade of D. ConocoPhillips received the lowest ranking of H https://buff.ly/49aOicE
UK, Germany, Netherlands, Norway and Denmark have failed to align #oil & #gas🛢️ policies with 1.5C #ParisAgreement climate pledge, finds Oil Change International https://buff.ly/43cL5HY
Susana Muhamad, #Colombia’s #environment minister, who is expected to be the Cop16 president, said the South American country would use the summit to ensure #nature was a key part of the global environmental agenda in the year building up to the climate #Cop30 in the Brazilian Amazon in 2025, where countries will present new plans on how they will meet the #ParisAgreement.
The shortcomings of the COP series of meetings (and the failure of #ParisAgreement) have contributed to a shortening of the time by which we will reach 1.5c eleven years earlier.
So once we all got behind the Paris Agreements agenda on the #climatecrisis, things actually got worse.
I've said this before, but in the future (as our descendants grapple with #climatechange & its social disruption), our children's children will curse our political leaders for their lack of leadership & action(s)
Interactive: The pathways to meeting the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C limit
Yet, the world is currently on a path to warming that is double the aspirational 1.5C limit. Continuing mitigation efforts in line with existing climate policies would see a 66% chance of warming reaching 3C this century.
We are going through the bounty and diversity of this planet in full knowledge of our actions - we see it all happen from #Space.
But #RemoteSensing can also play a role in enforcement #ParisAgreement. A call to arms:
" EO science must undergo a radical overhaul: it must become more user-oriented, collaborative, and transdisciplinary; span the range from fiducial to contextual data; and embrace new technologies for data analysis (e.g., artificial intelligence)."
"Even though #emissions of heat-trapping gases are still rising every year, they’re rising more slowly than projected from 2000 to 2015.
UNEP’s Emissions Gap projected 2.5 to 2.9 degrees (4.5 to 5.2 degrees Fahrenheit), down from 3.5C before the [#ParisAgreement]. The global goal is 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit)."
" One day above 2 degrees of warming “does not mean that the #ParisAgreement has been breached,” Burgess told CNN, “but highlights how we are approaching those internationally agreed limits. We can expect to see increasing frequency of 1.5 degree and 2 degree days over the coming months and years.” "
🤬Study: 58% of world's richest companies quietly lobby against climate policies while publicly claiming to fully support the Paris Climate Agreement….consistently lobbied against worldwide climate efforts, contradicting their own commitments
…most at risk for greenwashing, including Chevron, Delta Air Lines, ExxonMobil, Stellantis, Southern Company, Nippon Steel Corp., and Duke Energy. #ClimateCrisis
Lack of collective ambition - Just weeks ahead of this year’s COP28 climate summit
"Just weeks ahead of this year’s COP28 climate summit, where one of the core tasks and most successful outcomes for the annual convening will be to attempt to restore the trust between developed and developing countries and raise their collective ambition and actions towards implementing the Paris Agreement, the recent pledging conference in Bonn for the second replenishment of the Green Climate Fund (GCF-2) sends some important signals. Unfortunately, they are not the ones we so urgently need right now!"
"Important contributor countries like Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Australia and the United States, which gave in prior resource mobilization rounds, have yet to make a commitment to GCF-2."
#ClimateDiary There is no question that #COP28 will be the most important yet. The #GlobalStocktake will be the “biggest accountability moment in history”, and on its basis leaders will need to make crucial key decisions about fiscal and policy commitments. With less than two months to go, we need to all be as well informed as possible and put pressure on leaders as much as we can. I thought I would start a 🧵that I will keep going in the run up 1/n
13/n #ClimateDiary decided to do a little #COP28#Glossary here: brief explainers of key terms, familiar to many of you no doubt but perhaps useful to have in one place.
Starting with #GlobalStocktake. The #GST was part of the #ParisAgreement: that every 5 years stock would be taken of where global policies and actions are at in terms of reducing carbon/green house gas emissions in order to stay under 1.5°C warming. This will be the first GST, and it’s important
#ClimateDiary 16/n apologies for pause in this #COP28 🧵. Now only 6 days to go until it starts (30th Nov) - stepping up again! To continue with #Glossary a bit more: #NationallyDeterminedContributions (NDCs) are what each country pledges to do - voluntarily. There is no binding obligation; this is how the #ParisAgreement finally happened. You csn read more here:
