BOOM!

Toyota SUV adverts banned for condoning driving that disregards its environmental impact in a landmark ruling, that the SUV ads had been created without “a sense of responsibility to society”.

An important precedent because arguably, none are.

‘Do not drive’: recalls 50,000 older US cars over deadly airbag fears Toyota said on Monday it is urging the owners of 50,000 older US vehicles to get immediate recall repairs because an airbag inflator could explode and potentially kill motorists.

The Japanese automaker said the “do not drive” advisory covers some 2003-04 model year Corolla, 2003-04 Corolla Matrix, and 2004-05 Rav 4s with Takata air bag inflators. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/jan/30/toyota-recall-cars-airbag-inflator

If You’ve Got a New Car, It’s a Data Privacy Nightmare
"Bad news: your car is a spy. If your vehicle was made in the last few years, you’re probably driving around in a data-harvesting machine that may collect personal information as sensitive as your race, weight, and sexual activity. Volkswagen’s cars reportedly know if you’re fastening your seatbelt and how hard you hit the brakes.
That’s according to new findings from Mozilla’s *Privacy Not Included project. The found that every major car brand fails to adhere to the most basic privacy and security standards in new internet-connected models, and all 25 of the brands Mozilla examined flunked the organization’s test. found brands including , , , , and collect about drivers including race, facial expressions, weight, health information, and where you drive. Some of the cars tested collected data you wouldn’t expect your car to know about, including details about sexual activity, race, and immigration status, according to Mozilla."

Today, a more sophisticated electric three wheeler than yesterday’s Sinclair C5 - the Toyota i-Road. I drove this in 2014 on a press trip to cover a mobility trial in Grenoble that offered i-Roads for hire. Amazing machine. Driven by hub motors in the front wheels, steering is via the rear wheel. ‘Active Lean’ technology means it leans into corners like a motorcycle. Great to drive. ‘The agility of a motorcycle, the comfort of a car’, said Toyota. ☑️

I know I’m supposed to be back on the Nissans but yesterday’s Datsun 240Z got me thinking about its Toyota near contemporary, the 2000GT. Like the 240Z, the 2000GT combined a straight six engine and a sleek coupé body, and altered perceptions about the capabilities of its maker. One big difference - the 240Z was a huge seller, especially in the US but only 351 2000GTs were built. This one was on sale at 2023 for an eye-watering €890,000.

If solid-state are a 'game changer' for the production & sale of then 's announcement that they think they are nearing the point when they can mass produce them at the same level & costs as 'normal' car batteries looks like good news;

But, by Toyota's own admission this is still around four year's off... and such claims/targets have slipped before, so don't hold you breath.

Perhaps the bigger Q. for the UK is where do we stand on this next step in car-tech?

Very interesting to hear what NA CEO Ted Ogawa has to say about investment in the US.

Essentially, Toyota is ignoring EPA guidelines about BEV mix and focusing entirely on customer demand, and they will not make BEVs in numbers higher than expected demand lest they waste their resources.

Toyota’s now-well-known reticence in jumping into the BEV bandwagon, preferring to sell instead, may prove to be the better bet. The EPA is likely to reduce their mandate for 50% BEV new car sales by 2030. If they do, then Toyota’s strategy would have been proven right.

I caught the start of a nest in my engine bay. They were using the insulation from the underside of the plastic engine cover and stuffing it between the intake runners and the top of the engine.

What are people using as rodent deterrents these days?
