I caught the start of a nest in my engine bay. They were using the insulation from the underside of the plastic engine cover and stuffing it between the intake runners and the top of the engine.

What are people using as rodent deterrents these days?

New paper on African mole-rat hearing:

Contrary to a recent study, we show that these rodents indeed have otoacustic emissions and their pattern highlights specializations for low frequency hearing (acoustic fovea) in common and naked mole-rats.

Animal of the day (149)

This overly round ball of fluff is a Common Gundi, an African rodent found in rocky deserts across the northern parts of the continent. It is one of five species of gundis, a group also known as "comb rats" due to the comb-like bristles found on the middle toes of their hind paws. When alarmed, they will thump those hind paws on the ground, and if threatened, they will either run to the nearest crevice or play dead. Diurnal and herbivorous, they live in colonies and pile onto each other for warmth. They are highly vocal and social creatures, and the colony goes as far as sharing a common bathroom, aptly named a "dunghill".

Spotted some movement in our backyard when looking out a window & luckily had my zoom camera nearby so managed to snap this rather cute & healthy looking rat chomping on some greens before it quickly disappeared.😜😷🥱

N(e)orat (pronounced no-rat or neorat, whichever you prefer) is an upcoming emoji set that was created as a response to Volpeon’s neocat and neofox emoji sets (no shade thrown, ILY volp) - except with rats!

Tomorrow I plan to release the initial set of the emotes, which you will be free to use on any non-commercial platform!

Animal of the day (124)

Did you know porcupines also came in pocket size? Born with soft fur, the Armored Rat grows spines on its back and sides after the first month. Found in wet lowland rainforests of Latin America, from northern Honduras to northwest Ecuador, it feeds on fruit, insects and green plant matter. It is part of a family of similar neo tropical spiny rats more closely related to porcupines, Guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus, than to rats. This family is comprised of specialists of a wide range of ecological habitats that includes terrestrial, fossorial and semi aquatic.

Animal of the day (114)

With its cute expressive face, the Southern Viscacha, one of five viscacha species, often looks high and happy. Although resembling a rabbit with a long tail, it is not a lagomorph, but a rodent closely related to chinchillas. Found in the high-altitude mountainous regions of South America, from Peru to Argentina, it is a crepuscular vegetarian, feeding on mountain grasses and herbs. Incredibly social, it forms small colonies that communicate with each other using various calls, and engage in playful antics and cuddle piles.

I've just discovered a new client for with unique features I still haven't seen elsewhere: multi instance view, the possibility to browse posts by author (and not just chronologically) and a curated list of recommended posts. It's still in beta I think, but definitely very interesting. I'll test it as my main client for some weeks.
