Now that I have returned to okcupid and they insist on showing me straight people, my random sampling of straight people in southern California on the app has revealed an important finding: being straight is bad for your skin!!!?!

Seriously though, why do so many straight, cis women my age look like they are 10 or 20 years older than me? And like, I am used to us trans girls having estrogenated vampire skin, but even the cis lesbians have healthy skin well into their 40s and 50s.

There hasn't been much peer-reviewed research into them yet, so let's take a look at a recent paper by Diane E. The vaginal microbiome is a name for colony the microorganisms that live in the vagina, known as vaginal flora. The balance changes throughout life, and "good" bacteria such as Lactobacillus strains help the vagina to self-clean and prevent infections. Imbalances can result in infections. Research into the vaginal microbiome is in its infancy: we know a bit, but we don't know everything yet.

Because the data isn't publicly accessible by publication, it's rare to find a testing company who will be transparent about the basics, such as if a test was run on the same sample twice, it would give the same results. When a comparison database is used, it's also hard to know how representative the dataset is.

At the end of the day, we don't know enough about what a typical and healthy microbiome looks like, and it's likely that this differs across populations anyway - for example, African American women are more likely to have a healthy microbiome which contains very little Lactobacillus and more of other bacteria.

Because we know so little about the vaginal microbiome in general, datasets are, at best, as incomplete as the rest of science. A database probably won't include every single genetic variant of a strain of bacteria. They're also likely to be skewed specifically towards white populations.

The other reason is that gynaecological health concerns are often dismissed by doctors. If you're having recurrent yeast infections or symptoms, sometimes it can be hard to feel heard and continue advocating for yourself. These tests can feel like they provide answers.

These are genuine and real problems that healthcare providers must address.

When did young people stop getting taught how to write in paragraphs? 😅​

Grading papers and it just mystifies me that so many don't seem to understand the idea that when you start a new topic/subject, you should start a new paragraph....rather than a 20-sentence-long paragraph that makes your teacher do the work to try to figure out if you actually are answering the different elements of the question. 😑​

@JoscelynTransient @RoseRaven this is kind of in the "eventually even patriarchy eats itself" realm. We've spent so long letting boys succeed just because they are boys and telling girls they have to work harder, that girls started succeeding en masse and we didn't even know how to support boys. We've told boys to succeed by being aggressive, then all these post-second-wave inclusive feminist girls hit the scene like "what is wrong with you?"

I wrote a largish essay pre-transition about how part of the backlash against women was their relative, if somewhat piddling, success society-wide, and how that success and backlash mirrors the backlash of Black progress.

Both are successes at great cost and work, but the appearance to white patriarchy is loss of their power (rather than betterment for all.)
