I quit Twitter and moved to Mastodon in October 2022 when Elon Musk took over. Many other academics also came to Mastodon, and I was very happy - see my pinned posts. But most of them later became inactive.

I stick around because I've decided that corporate-owned social media are dangerous - especially now, when authoritarians are spreading their reach. Turns out it's unrealistic to expect that most academics feel this way - yet. They may get the idea when it's too late.

"The findings suggest the return to office movement has been a poorly-executed failure, but one particular figure stands out - a quarter of executives and a fifth of HR professionals hoped RTO mandates would result in staff leaving."

Final results:
CDU/CSU 30%
AfD 15.9%
SPD 13.9%
Green 11.9%
Sahra Wagenknecht 6.2%
FDP 5.2%
Die Linke 2.7%
FW 2.7%
Volt 2.6%
Die Partei 1.9%
Tierschutzpartei 1.4%

Honestly, relative to polls, it's not even that bad; Volt and Die Partei voters at the EU level mostly vote Green or maaaybe SPD at the federal level. There isn't much of a story here beyond "the economy in Germany was bad in 2022-3 due to unusual exposure to Russia and is only starting to recover."

Presidents Macron and Biden have agreed on the use of profits from frozen Russian assets for Ukraine.

The presidents also pledged to support efforts to transfer them within the G7 and the EU. It is about $50 billion.

The decision of the G7 countries will be announced on June 14.

On tenterhooks waiting to see EU election results, and the policy priorities that follow.

This is the single biggest election year in human history, with at least 64 countries going to the polls, almost all of which are understood to be massively consequential.

Whatever may come: onward together, my friends ❤️

This, incidentally, is why I'm staying home this weekend and most of the coming week—three Taylor Swift gigs in front of audiences of 70,000 singing, dancing fans in a bowl-shaped stadium. Her previous concerts in Spain and France have all been superspreader events, and I'm not enthusiastic to join in.

This is where you come in!

I'd like this policy to be a series of bullet points: "Unlike Google, XScreenSaver will not [Thing.] An endless, concise catalog of their sins.

I need both your snark AND a link supporting your snark. It's critical for the joke to land. Include both.

Since people keep asking why the NHL ASL broadcast exists and why deaf people can't just use CC, here's why:

  1. For people born deaf, ASL is their first language, not English.
  2. ASL isn't English, just signed out. It's legitimately a completely different language.
  3. You can't get emotion from CC.
  4. CC is super behind.

59 years ago today, Griswold v. Connecticut guaranteed the right to birth control.

Justice Thomas says the Supreme Court should "reconsider" that ruling.

And this week, 38 GOP senators voted against the Right to Contraception Act.

Republicans are coming for birth control.

The great American comeback continues.

On my watch, 15.6 million more Americans have the dignity and respect that comes with a job, and unemployment has been at or below 4% for 30 months.

I will keep fighting to lower costs for families like the ones I grew up with.
