If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

reillypascal,
@reillypascal@hachyderm.io avatar

@molly0xfff the main thing I miss is people actually going to a variety of websites. I remember when Wordle just came out (and wasn't owned by NYT) somebody said that if there is going to be a web3, it'll just be people actually going to websites again, like they were with Wordle, and that resonated with me.

@ology it takes in a control voltage that immediately jumps from value to value and slows down that jump into a smooth slope. You can adjust how fast the rise time and fall time are independently of each other. Another term that gets used for something like this is a "slew limiter."

The module can also generate its own slopes as an envelope, or it can cycle the slopes as an LFO

This guy made a tool that beeps every time a website sends data about you to Google. The beeps blur into a continuous buzz: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/tracker-beeper/

I use Privacy Badger (https://privacybadger.org/, blocks trackers), uBlock Origin (https://ublockorigin.com/, adblocker), Firefox, and the SearXNG search engine (https://searxng.ca/ or find instances at https://searx.space/), but it's annoying I have to.

A video of navigating various popular news sites (Daily Mail, nu.nl, telegraaf.nl) in Chrome. A terminal is visible in the background, running a program that beeps ever time the site reports back to Google.

I'm among the suckers who started groups on Slack despite the limits of the free account. Using Discord always reminds me of walking into the room of a friend who never cleans their house. I am thinking maybe I'll try Matrix if I get the time and gumption to make a change. For now I'm content to do nothing. And I do note that some orgs stick with the Slack free plan even though hitting limits disappears messages; and some orgs stick with Discord despite the clutter and uneven participation.

I have a new track out today! https://applytriangle.bandcamp.com/track/if-this-reaches-you

It's a glitchy, experimental trio for flute, clarinet, and MIDI keyboard/Max. There are Morse code and other ham radio samples, electric piano, and bowed cardboard box, and it's surprisingly groovy.

The full album has 11 different composers, and you can find it here: https://applytriangle.bandcamp.com/album/oxalis-triangularis-vol-2

New blog post — I have a track coming out April 12! it's on a new album by the electroacoustic trio Apply Triangle with works by 33 composers, and it was recorded remotely during lockdown.

I talk about collecting amateur radio samples to use in the piece, the album project, and there's even a poem.

I got a new fountain pen, and it has the trans flag colors! It's a Hongdian N9 with a "long blade" or architect nib. The nib took me a bit to get used to, but I find it gives particularly nice shading to my inks, and has a wet flow, which I appreciate.

Here I'm using Sailor Studio 024 ink and Cosmo Air Snow paper.

Imported some non-audio data into Audacity > time stretched it with a phase vocoder > chopped it at the transients > used the Max/MSP "MuBu" tools for concatenative synthesis.

I'm getting my music on PeerTube, and here's the next one! It's for 2 pianists, 2 percussionists & "no-input mixer." The outputs of the mixer are connected back to various inputs, and I can unmute various channels to get feedback. The percussionists are playing a homemade speaker instrument, megaphone & more.

@alabut I like it! I came onto the internet just after the late 90s–early 2000s you mentioned, and by the time I started making online friends it was on Facebook, etc. IndieWeb/Mastodon/IRC/current blogs/etc. now give me a strange kind of nostalgia for a past I didn't quite participate in. An odd feeling, but I very much like these platforms.

A chamber orchestra composition I recently put on PeerTube! One of the percussionists is placing a contact mic on a large speaker to make flabby feedback; the pianist is using a contact mic/transducer against the piano strings; and there's lots of microtonal/noise sounds from the rest of the ensemble.
