Absolutely appalling scenes from #Harvard. #Jewish students being harassed. While protesting against the slaughter of civilians by #Israel in #palestine is justified. The usual crap of threats against those who do not agree and calling for harm to the #USA is not acceptable. Also any support for #hamas should result in those doing so being taken away. Hamas have killed many of their own people, and knew exactly what they were doing when they killed so many innocent #Israelis.

Jacob Rees Mogg is wrong: Britons do want ID cards

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/apr/06/would-id-cards-be-such-a-bad-thing-if-they-could-make-things-work-better

Martha Gill is ill informed. Many ‘Britons' are wary of the growing collection of unified data on every ‘citizen’ and the way, when combined with image recognition it can and undoubtedly will be misused my a malignant government (and we have had many, all trying to push the envelope).

rodlux,
@rodlux@maly.io avatar

@Wen I have lived in two countries where I had to carry ID. I didn't bother at all. The problem in the UK last time was that Blair wanted to let private companies run the database.

rodlux,
@rodlux@maly.io avatar

@Wen yes that is also what worries me. We have a history in the UK of blacklisting people (Economic League and construction industry). I am not in favour of private companies running databases about stop and search (which was the case here). Last time it was suggested that the banks run the database.

According to #theeconomist being #insane used to legally bar you from being an MP in the #UK. That law has now been removed.... Now I can fully understand why the #conservative party and some ex-Tory MPs have issues.

With the Zuckerberg takeover impending, there's a lot of confusion circulating about the use of user-level and instance-level blocks, and how our online expressions can be secured against Meta. Everyone who objects to their accounts being mined by the Zuckerberg entity for data collection, AI ingestion, monetization, and possible ghost-profile building needs to understand this problem. Here's information to clarify.

Neither a user-level block, or an instance-level block, will protect our posts from Meta data-mining by default on a Mastodon instance. Posts won't be delivered directly, but can be ingested by other means; if, for example, users on Meta-federated instances boost them.

However, both user and instance blocks will totally prevent post delivery in all cases IF your host instance has enabled the functionality called Authorized Fetch.

By default, Authorized Fetch is off on Mastodon instances and most haven't turned it on. If this concern is important to you, you might want to respectfully reach out to your admins and let them know. Remember that they are working hard to provide and sustain online community at no charge. It's likely they won't be very familiar with it and will need time to look into it.

For more information on Authorized Fetch, check out this blog post by @brook : https://hub.sunny.garden/2023/06/28/what-does-authorized_fetch-actually-do/ Please untag Brook from replies unless you specifically intend to address him

@ophiocephalic @brook I am curious to know if you think there are any times when mining data from social media sites would be acceptable? For example many academics mine data for aspects such as the spread of false information.

In general though I think we need stronger data protection and ethical policies on the use of social media data. But there also has to be (in my view) acceptance of some data mining.

What was it like to work at Xerox PARC at its peak?

This guide for newcomers to the lab, published 40 years ago in 1983, introduces the computing and social environment of PARC. Lots of quirky systems and obscure lore.

@amoroso while I am too young to have worked at Xerox Parc back it's revolutionary times, it is in no small part that I do what I do now due to their ground breaking work on user interfaces. The desktop #gui is old hat now but was the gateway to computers for many. A certain Mr Jobs owed Parc a bit too :)

Dutch town throws worlds largest festival. The fesitval is expected to attract 125,000 visitors, and shows how his works live on to this day. They remain classics!

I have appeared in a stage version of some of his work, and once got paid a tiny amount for appearing as an extra in a adaptation. Great stories!

I'm at the stage of writing a book when I keep finishing it.

I finished it yesterday.

Then today I found a problem, rewrote parts, and finished it again.

I'll keep finishing until I have to give it to my editor.

Books are never finished. They are abandoned.

(Next comes the part when I say, "I'm never writing another book. That usually lasts about 6 months.)

rodlux,

@Teri_Kanefield it is not just books that are never finished. I write research papers frequently, and no matter how often its if "finished" it never is.

The Intel 80186 is the most interesting member of the x86 family because it's the least known. Here's a short history:

rodlux,
@rodlux@maly.io avatar

@amoroso we had a stack of 186 machines in school, the RM Nimbus PC186. It ran its own version of MS Dos and Windows but was not a true PC compatible. They were ok, but totally outclassed by the early Acorn ARM machines we also had.

The card is the emblem of a child’s standing in civic life: their direct access to a public service, not mediated or controlled by others. The library card grants rights to the politically voiceless and powerless.

It’s more radical than the idea of itself.

rodlux,
@rodlux@maly.io avatar

@corsent library fines are also a key step in a child's life. Probably the first social penalty fine they will receive.

Capture the Flag, is a 3D maze game for the 8-bit line of computers. Although basic by the standards of today, it shows what can be achieved with limited computing resources. The original almost ? Perhaps not, but it is an improvement on wire-frame 3D maze games which were around during the period.

rodlux,
@rodlux@maly.io avatar

@woefulhc @Mary625 you are right sucks and for everyone how they feel about it is different. In my case being , I was so glad I found out about it two years ago. With a little effort I feel so much better. Sure, I always worry about potential complications later. But for atleaat, diagnosis can bring on some very positive lifestyle changes. Wish I had known years before....

rodlux,
@rodlux@maly.io avatar

@Mary625 @woefulhc when I was diagnosed, I was a little over weight perhaps 4-5kg for my BMI. I had been more before. However. In my family there is some already, and they are not overweight. I don't subscribe to the view it is only genetic (except perhaps in some cases) but that does increase the risk I was told. So it is a combination for factors. In the end, diet and exercise are your friends... And I have to say I am not extreme on either point.
