In my years of cooking I'd never thought of trying that. News; it's for a good reason no-one does this.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr I live in mid southwestern Ontario Canada. We're a ~90m train or drive away from Toronto which is nice, but we're just far away to not have megatropolis woes like Ultra-Traffic to deal with. While I live in a mid-sized metro area of about half a mil, twenty minutes in any direction gets you into farm fields where they all talk and behave like Letterkenny, which frankly is more accurate than most Canadians want to admit.

tezoatlipoca,
@tezoatlipoca@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr While there's a bunch of nice things about Canada (like not paying for healthcare, still a rather progressive (freedom and rights) and protective constitutional, legal and legislative system) and we have gobs of nice nature to enjoy, we like some of our cousins south of the border are fighting a wave of conservative populism that is (trying to) dismantle a lot of the good things for $profit$. And while we don't have quite the same money in politics problem,

2/

tezoatlipoca,
@tezoatlipoca@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr we still give our big corporations way too much leeway (oil+gas, groceries, residential income trusts) and in the past 20 years especially they've been gouging and screwing us and our environment. Unless we bought our homes in the mid 00s, noone I know under 50 can afford to buy a house anywhere practical.

But, all things considered, still not a terrible place to live.

The complex chaos of magnetic fields — that is much, much larger than the size of Earth — designated as Region 3664 and Region 3668 (center right sunspot smudge) has been spawning a great number of flares recently, flinging an truly stupendous amount of energy and relativistic particles out into the solar system.

The movie "Top Gun" has always been a favorite of mine. It was one of the first movies I saw in the theatre as a child and it was largely responsible for a path that eventually saw me working as an airline captain On merit it is a horrible movie in so many ways but I didn't know that as a kid. Now I just consider it one of those “guilty pleasure" movies.

What is a horribly movie that you can just watch over and over?

tezoatlipoca,

@chris Battleship (2012). Its so bad. Like, real bad. But, like the Micheal Bay Transformer movies its just mil-tech porn and shit blowing up for no good reason and preparation montages and quotes "Lets drop some lead on these MFs"

Battle Los Angeles sits in the same bucket (of shame), despite heroic efforts by Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez. They flew a billion light years and don't have close in anti-projectile defenses? cmon. Every ship in the Expanse has half a dozen PDCs.

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

tezoatlipoca,
@tezoatlipoca@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr We have a saying around here for when someone asks if they can go ahead and do something (and you are otherwise indifferent to it), you say "fill yur boots" like "go ahead, whatever."

I can only imagine that you're either peeing your pants while wearing rubber galoshes, or you're about to fill The Boot for a drinking game.

tezoatlipoca,
@tezoatlipoca@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr We also have one for when you say something embarrassing and it comes back to bite you, instead of putting your foot in your mouth you "eat crow". And I can only imagine it means something Mr. Jones says was really awkward, you have offended Sheryl Crow, or you are a cannibal and you are eating Russel Crowe.

lauren, to Youtube
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

I'm going to back off a wee bit on my general criticism of "reaction videos", at least as far as Hitchcock's masterpiece "North by Northwest" (1959) is concerned.

The film blows away every reaction individual, pair, or group that I've come across watching it. In most cases, they've simply never seen a film like this before, and are staggered by it in pretty much every respect (including the fact that, of course, there's no CGI). But really everything about it impresses them, as it should. And they all are amazed at a complex plot and what is indeed a most remarkable transition at the very end, from hanging on a cliff to a berth on a train. Probably the only transition that beats it is the flying bone in "2001: A Space Odyssey."

And you also can see some of them noting with disdain that so much of what they've seen during their lives was obviously just copying of themes that originated in films like North by Northwest, and now excited to see other films from back then.

Which if nothing else, tells us how the film industry of recent decades has failed young people (yeah, and everyone else too) so dismally.

There is a little girl busy explaining something rather exciting to her...father? He is older but not quite grandparent older so I'm guessing older Dad.

She is bouncing and talking with her hands and jumping excitedly as she discussed something just absolutely wonderful for her. He is laughing while she talks and has a wonderful smile on his face. He likely isn't keeping up with the story but the joy in their hearts as they move down the sidewalk is amazing. She has his hand, his attention, and all is right in the world.
