I was rushing earlier so didn’t post pics

I went from Bruxelles to Paris via Marne La Vallée today so as to check the suitability of the station there for Channel Tunnel services

The good news: there’s a platform that can be cordoned off, Lille Europe style

Less good: there’s either little or no stabling space south of the station. So you’d have to timetable fast turnarounds to use MLV

Nets separate passengers on escalators. TGV below stopped at the secure platform
Platform level - secure platform to the left

trantion,

@jon @fishter_uk Is it possible they intended to do passport controls here when the station was built, but then decided not to for whatever reason?

When I hear people say in that they like to make up the character’s backstory and personality as they play rather than beforehand or at a session 0, I think they must have players that are far better at improv than the ones I play with.

In my experience, if a character doesn’t have a backstory at the beginning, they never will have one.

trantion,

@DejahEntendu @zdl @Kokirimuscle I've heard stories of GMs just announcing that the bad guy has killed a PC's family, so you should care about the plot. That sounds bad, disempowering & off-putting; but on the other hand I like the idea of finding your home town is under threat and your next mission is to defend it. That sounds empowering and could be lots of fun. More role-play opportunities, too

https://youtu.be/ff04ecF9Dfw

trantion,

@TechConnectify It all makes sense now, having grown up with ceramic hobs (as we brits call the glass ones). Is the reason for not using the simmerstat on induction because those aren't resistive loads, and so the controls are more complex/precise?

Your periodic reminder that if you:

a) Dislike long threads and;

b) Follow someone who routinely posts long threads;

that is a YOU problem, which you can solve by unfollowing, and, if need be, blocking that user so they don't show up in your federated timeline.

trantion,

@pluralistic I have a filter set to block anything with "Long Thread/" in it from my feeds but not when viewing the actual post. That way I can see the start of the thread and choose to read it (usually on your website), and I also see your boosts and other stuff. Win/win

@jon How sturdy is that box? I find it quite easy to either crush semi-rigid boxes with tight bungee cords, or they're loose enough it can fall off.

The peoples in the eras of history that inspire and other fantasy had hobbies. They sang, danced, played games and other things that didn't have "value."

Your characters should have hobbies too! Use a skill or tool on something without any mechanical value to your PC and expand the stories that you tell.

https://fullmoonstorytelling.com/2021/03/21/your-dd-characters-should-have-hobbies/

trantion,

@bedirthan I've played with this a little by developing the mechanics of a class into a personality, for example we treated my beast master ranger's companion wolf as a big dog that everyone could pet, and my future bard idea is going to be an established musician & storyteller who is on an adventure (rather than an adventurer with some class abilities).

But I've not got very far yet with developing pure hobbies - maybe because there's not much time between each dungeon to dig into it yet.

Hard to overstate how enshittified and botshitted Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith on Gmaps. Maps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite it being fully visible in Street View.

Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.

Google Maps, showing the storefront for Golden State Lock as an empty building.

trantion,

@mbpaz @pluralistic But Google Maps does allow anyone to add random features like a rock, or a place in the middle of a field where they launched a drone from, name it whatever they want, and put it onto the map

And yes, I hate the ‘discussion’ about short haul flight bans.

The idea in principle is fine, but the crux is HOW you do it and WHAT you ban (France bans very, very little) - but the number of people going “ooooooh can we have the same here?" massively outweighs the number of people who’ve examined the ineffectiveness of France's ban

trantion,

@jon I linked to your blog post when someone posted about the Spanish short haul flight ban this weekend. Another thing is, France and Spain both have compulsory reservation for high-speed trains, right? Do they run any extra trains where flights are banned, or do they just say "train's full, sorry 🤷 "

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

Is there a word used in to replace "humanity" in worlds where multiple races live together, of which humans are one?

Mainly in the sense of "identity as a person" or "the standards of behaviour and ethics expected of a civilised, sapient being".

I don't mean a replacement like "elvenness", but a word that could be used by anyone in a society where different races live side by side and consider each other (more or less) equal.

Ok, with the gas stove thread, people won't stop asking why I'm not considering an induction cooktop. So here's another thread where I try to answer this.

Perhaps the bottom line is this: I'm a Midwesterner. It carries a lotta baggage.

To elucidate, first you should understand that I have tried induction! Not the best experiences of it, to be sure, but I've used two portable burners and found them both to be impressive (with a few caveats). But on the whole, not a game changer to me.

trantion,

@TechConnectify I thought you'd made it pretty clear you'd already tried induction, so I'm not sure why people missed that.

When I got my new kitchen I thought I'd be fine with ceramic hobs, but in the end I thought I might as well pay an extra £100 + pans for induction. Having previously used a badly fitted landlord-special gas cooker, I was very keen to get fitted hobs so I wouldn't get any more crumbs falling down between the cooker and worktop.

The longest and most complex blog post I have ever written

Everything about the future of long distance through the Channel Tunnel

  • Routes
  • Stations (and passport, luggage scan constraints)
  • Rolling stock
  • Operators

No single problem is insurmountable, but in combination I’m not hopeful for new or expanded services - from Eurostar or anyone else

https://jonworth.eu/the-future-of-long-distance-train-services-through-the-channel-tunnel/

trantion,

@jon As an alternative to de-training, do you think it would be feasible for someone to run a service based on changing trains, with guaranteed connections, presumably at Lille or Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy? In the UK-bound direction, the first train would then continue somewhere else, or park in a siding, instead of blocking a platform for an hour.

Where the extra staff intensive boarding process involves a surly guy checking your ticket for you to board while a queue of passengers waits on the cold platform and blocks passengers trying to get to the carriages further along

Top process design, this

trantion,

@jon Usually I see it the other way round, people wanting to put big bags on the seat next to them because they daren't leave it in the rack at the end of the carriage for fear of theft.

SSL appears to work fine in Firefox. Hoping it works in a couple of days

I hate the stupid "draft me an email" 'use case' that Microsoft, Google, OpenAI etc keep parroting over and over again. Draft me an email about what, motherfucker? To whom? With what tone? What information do you want to convey? How do you want to sign it? If you provide all of this necessary information to the LLM, you already wrote the goddamn email. The fact that these companies keep highlighting the same 3 or 4 nonexistent use cases is proof that this is all useless garbage. Fucking christ

trantion,

@passenger @bamboombibbitybop We've had anti-compression for ages, for example taking a screenshot of some text to post it on social media. What LLMs have innovated is, now we have a lossy anti-compression algorithm: the text output is similar, but not the same, as the text input. Innovation!
