Ojou to Banken-kun

Just learned about ! To make up for yesterday, Day 1 of Dec Recs I'll recommend this Chinese short animated series "All Saints Street" with four seasons. An angel, vampire, mummy, zombie, and werewolf live together. What could go wrong? Really enjoy it for the combination of great art, slice of life, and the supernatural. There's also a comic. It's produced similar to "Hey your cat ears are showing" but more memes and skulls than wholesome uwu.

For Day 4 of I'm going to cheat a little by recommending 3 short audio docs (podcast format) folx interested in learning more about an underrated topic.
🔥"Chester is Rising" (5 eps): the 30+ year grassroots Environmental Justice movement in the city home to the USA's largest incinerator among other major polluters.
https://rss.com/podcasts/chesterisrising/
✊"March On: The Fight for Pride" (5 eps): the complicated history behind Philadelphia's pride march, including internalized racism and transphobia, and the work to heal and create something new
https://whyy.org/programs/march-on/
🪲"Headlong: Surviving Y2K" (6 eps): despite the 2000's millennium bug being an afterthought for many, we explore the stories of those who were impacted by it personally, even years later

For Day 20 of , my favorite movies that I watched in 2023. Coincidentally, they both take place in the 1980's.
🧑‍🌾 Minari (2020): A immigrant Korean family moves promptly from Cali to rural Arkansas to follow the father's dream of being an independent farmer of Korean crops. Of course, adjusting to their new home is far from easy.
🚕 A Taxi Driver (2017): Based on a true story, this pro-labor movie centers a Taxi Driver on the front lines of the uprising in Gwangju, Korea, thanks to a German journalist seeking to get the message out internationally.

Dang... I know fansubbing is becoming less and less common these days, but it feels disheartening trying to reach out repeatedly to offer help to what groups still look like they're active only to be told they're likely quitting after their last ongoing project. This has happened several times now.

I really want to try and preserve some older shows for easier viewing and help with that but I'm nowhere near fluent enough in Japanese to tackle that on my own yet (and to be real, probably won't be for some time). I can set up subs, time them, do QC, edit, and just about everything else now and wish I could use those skills to do some good.

literalgrill,
@literalgrill@sakurajima.moe avatar

I've personally had a big drive in particular to try and subtitle Sue Cat, one of the earliest idol anime out there.

I understand translation is legit pricey, as it stands it'd be $100 for four episodes (thank heck Sue Cat is a short form anime) on likely unfairly cheap rates I've been quoted online. Which is still too high a budget for my disabled butt to manage.

Perhaps I can find someone to do a skill exchange with or something...? Perhaps Fedi Fansubs could just become a thing and usher in a new era of anime goodness?!?

I dunno, but I'd love to see it somehow happen!

Girls Band Cry is the fantasy of having somebody who cares when you have a trauma-based meltdown while out with them and will go after you to find out what's wrong instead of continuing the fun without you, oblivious to your distress

@waitworry @CeeZ i have been thinking about how much yuri fandom feels like being fans of a cursed team, like you never expect them to win so you can't be disappointed but deep down you still care and then they get you within striking distance and suck you back in and then axe falls cuz of course it does and now you're less trusting than ever before

Yubisaki to Renren

C'EST. TROP. MIGNON.

Now you can have working QR codes that look like artwork: Redditor creates working anime QR codes using Stable Diffusion

On Tuesday, a Reddit user named “nhciao” posted a series of artistic QR codes created using the Stable Diffusion AI image-synthesis model that can still be read as functional QR codes by smartphone camera apps. The functional pieces reflect artistic styles in ...continues

Globaltom,

@danie10 The QR code standard says a QR code is a grid of black and white pixels :-)

PixelJones,

@danie10 This is cool but imagine what's possible...

If you can train a / to learn how to hack (sort of ugly) images to be readable as QR codes, how about training and generative AI to create beautiful images that nearly invisibly embed data readable only by an trained app?

Outline: Pick from fixed set of 1600 "QRmojiis". Generator ML perturbs image to embed data in pleasing way. Reader ML recognizes base image, takes the diff & reads the perturbations as data.

My Top of the 2010s (2023 Edition)

(Originally published in July 2023)

Now that I’ve done one for the 2020s, it’s time to go one step back and look at my first full-length decade of anime.

AWanderingSorcerer,
@AWanderingSorcerer@urusai.social avatar

A Note Before Reading: I have not seen every anime in the world. I haven’t seen most anime, either in general or for the 2010s. This list is part of a project, both for myself and others, to see where my anime tastes currently are and how they have evolved; I plan to make lists like this for each decade every year or most every year, depending on circumstances. I would like discussion on my picks, but please don’t flood this with “Where’s X?” because the answer is either “I haven’t seen it,” “I haven’t finished it,” or “I have seen it, but I didn’t like it as much as the anime I did pick.”

With that note out of the way, let’s get started.

AWanderingSorcerer,
@AWanderingSorcerer@urusai.social avatar

Runner Up: : A banner year for Gen Urobuchi, Psycho-Pass is in the different direction in terms of genre and presentation but still asks similar questions to Fate/zero in terms of what humanity wants - and what it’s willing to sacrifice to get that. Set in a future where surveillance is all-pervading and criminal potentiality has been reduced to a number, the case of the week first half of the series is quite strong, demonstrating the different ways this society views violence and how such a system impacts everyone, from the common citizen to those working within it.

@Sheril I've had Totoro as a screen background for a while now since kids found it (& migrated to new phone). New phone back is a sticker.

The translucent back of a phone with a round sticker with the word science repeated around the border and in the middle - a test tube, conical flask, tubing and a beaker.

So, folks, why ISN'T there anything else out there like Madoka Magica?

I get that it's kind of the penultimate Magical Girl But REAL anime, but it's bizarre that it's almost the only thing like that. You'd expect it to inspire an entire genre, like happened to isekai, but nothing?

biminiroad,
@biminiroad@hachyderm.io avatar

@glassbottommeg I checked if anyone pointed it out, but I don’t think so~ My-HiMe came out before Madoka and is right up there with Madoka for me :D

ItsNotewell,

@glassbottommeg I think it's because every attempt to replicate it decided that the point of the series was the suffering that happened in the middle, rather than the need to continue to have hope in the face of hopelessness at the end.

All its imitators just torture the characters without reason, end, or a plot purpose.

Can anyone recommend me an anime? I recently watched "My Love Story!!" and it was so good. Yes, it was cheesy and overdramatic, but that was part of the charm. I loved how sweet and wholesome it was, and I really loved the characters. I also found it really funny.

It doesn't have to be a romance anime, though I am totally up for that as I have gotten into some romances this year (I also liked Yamada's First Time, which normally ecchi stuff isn't my thing, but it wasn't terribly gratuitous, it was sex-positive, and I got pretty hooked into the story and found it hilarious, too).

Just looking for something similarly touching, wholesome, funny, and fun to watch with likable characters, like "My Love Story!!"

Any thoughts? :)
