For those new here from #twitter to #mastodon may I suggest @FediFollows as well as @feditips. If you’re interested in running your own server I personally use @mastohost for managing my service, simple to setup and pay them, been using them for months and it’s cheaper than Twitter blue for many individuals, but inexpensively can scale if you become more popular as I have been. I should probably just use @mastohost then! I tried to set up my own server on Google Cloud to challenge myself and Nginx wouldn’t work FOR THE LIFE OF ME. VERY FRUSTRATING!
In addition to that advice to people new from #Twitter here on #mastodon if you need to replicate news feeds you can use https://press.coop for things like @Reuters and @CNN and @cnnbrk just like on Twitter but note these are not official accounts but they are using official posts from the Twitter accounts to recreate the experience. You'll find many volunteers have made great bots for all sorts of things. I even made a #twitch bot you can find in my github to post here. #twittermigration
Another tip for those new to #Mastodon and the #fediverse from the #twittermigration and #twitterexodus if you want to find people to follow of different interests the community trunk is a great resource to find people and announce you are there. If you’re looking for other servers to possibly join or even connect with, you can use https://fediverse.observer/ to find many different #fediverse servers not just Mastodon, it can even geographically map all the servers for you too. #Mastodon is more like a garden than a supermarket. There is no algorithm or points system feeding you a constant stream of content. You have to gradually cultivate a feed by discovering and following individuals and hashtags, pruning what you don't want, and engaging in one-on-one conversions.
Free Mastodon tip: you can follow a big general hashtag like #art, then mute styles you are not interested in, like #️⃣furry, to fine-tune your feed.

Another tip for those new to #Mastodon from #twitter we don't do verifications in the same way as twitter and such as there is no central authority. We do link verification which validates against your website. This honestly will take a bit more than a post to explain but basically I own a domain and website and I have a record on my website mastodon checks against and says I'm verified to my website. Another #Mastotip for this mega thread of tips. If you happen to experience yourself getting Rate limited, no it's not that Elon Musk's ghost has followed you. #Mastodon has rate limits per user so the server isn't overloaded.
If you find this happening close your extra browser tabs with Mastodon open on your devices, and also consider using "Slow Mode" under Preferences -> Appearance.

I have rate limited myself several times using some tools to discover new and interesting people to follow and interact with. Only half way done with this list generated by the the followgraph app I just linked. It's great!

@chiefgyk3d Pretty good analogy with the cultivation. My feed started out as "locally boring", and a little cultivation has started to make it less so.
I'm still missing the Firehose, so I'm looking for a way to connect that and turn that on.
@drimplausible you’re gonna want to venture into your own server and explore relays then especially since many servers are discussing defederating from mastodon.social with meta coming in (not that I agree with it) because then you can explore it and cultivate it entirely as you want and set up relays to connect to more servers. My federated feed is absolutely fascinating. You’re more than welcome to hop over here buddy if you want a taste of my slice of the fediverse

@FinchHaven this latest kerfuffle with limited reading of posts and more seemed to have broke the camels back with quite a few addicts I knew. A lot of people are waking up to Musk is messing up royally and not as smart as people thought. People are realizing too much is going wrong and the communication is horrible. The only part that sucks is people think another corporation (Meta and Jack Dorsey/BlueSky) is somehow not going to eventually have problems too.

The Federated stream has been likened to a firehose
It's everything from everywhere that your instance can pick, and there's actually a setting in your Preferences to stop it from auto-scrolling, which helps
@chiefgyk3d@FinchHaven Some apps (eg Ice Cubes for iOS) let you follow home timelines natively, so that you can easily like, boost, or comment on them. Otherwise, take the link to the post and put it in your home server search to find the post there.
