My apologies for the probably stupid question, I’m still trying to get a grip on the interoperability between services in the Fediverse. I have both a kbin and a Lemmy account, still checking which fits me the best. If I’m on one of them, can I follow a magazine when being on Lemmy, or the opposite?...
Searching seems strange, but you can use the full kbin url. If its a magazine lemmy.world already knows about you can just type it direcly after the c/. ie - https://lemmy.world/c/RedditMigration@kbin.social . They are case sensitive unlike lemmy.
I'm finding Kbin more interesting than Lemmy on trying both. I can do all the Lemmy stuff but also follow people, microblog & various other things on Kbin that Lemmy doesn't do. Especially Kbin sees posts from around the Fediverse, Lemmy just sort of only sees thread types and gets no content from most of Fediverse, which seems a bit closed and sad. My feeling is Kbin seems quite a bit more integrated in to the Fediverse. Rapid dev pace is always appealing too. Just my impressions so far.
I can see kbin looks a lot like reddit, but as someone who never used reddit I'm a bit lost as to how to use this. Tips appreciated cause I want to interact with kpop fans!
With our growth numbers and with kbin finally with Lemmy again, things around the link aggregator fediverse feel more active than ever. Today when browsing all on Jerboa I saw so many more communities, posts, and comments than even yesterday. It's starting to feel like we have some real traction going on here. Let me know if you...
RIGHT. Yeah, with all the BS and the blackout on Reddit right now, I decided it was the time to check out lemmy and kbin. Liking jerboa so far! Haven't really figured out the difference besides how the "subs" are laid out yet though. But, onward and upward.
It's an Android app for lemmy. I just checked, and if you're primarily registered on kbin it isn't possible yet to log in with that account. Might become so in the future. Fedilab is another android app that I'm keeping an eye on for future kbin support.
The search form has been fixed (if you were experiencing this issue). This time, the Docker recreate may take a bit longer. Moving forward, when making changes, I will create pull requests like everyone else and ask for your review. Sorry for the inconvenience. Soon, the first tagged release will also be available. It's time to...
@eee I get 500 server error. Log shows "php.CRITICAL: Uncaught Error: App\Service\ActivityPub\ApHttpClient::getInstancePrivateKey(): Return value must be of type string, null returned"
@mastodonmigration@ernest it might be worth #kbin adding a banner to the top of the site for the software explaining just how early-stage it is, it could mitigate some brand/reputation harm with users when things go wrong (when not if)
Almost forgot I started working on a Bluesky app a few weeks ago 🫢
Anyone still using that site?
I just logged in and the main timeline is still a chaos of replies to people I do not follow.
@mttvll I’m not using it. I’ve tried to get access. I’d rather see a Reddit alternative so a Lemmy (or kbin) iOS client. Lemmy client would make a lot of sense. #Lemmy#LemmyiOS#Redditalternative
I don't know if it's due to over-exposure to programming memes but I certainly believed that no one was starting new PHP projects in 2023 (or 2020, or 2018, or 2012...). I was under the impression we only still discussed it at all because WordPress is still around....
Looks like #Lemmy and #Kbin keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the #threadiverse — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉
@ivy@hook@rysiek ah. That’s great to know. I had tried engaging with Lemmy via Mastadon, and eventually backed out because the lemmy boosts overwhelmed my feed. I’ll have to find a nice kbin instance to try it with.
#Lemmy now has 135,369 accounts. That is tracking with my expectations.
But while #Kbin had ~7,000 accounts yesterday, it’s just shot up to 30,930 accounts today.
While Lemmy is the 5th most used server software on the Fediverse, Kbin is now in 10th place and it’s growing at a faster rate than Lemmy.
A few days ago, I predicted that the #RedditMigration would result in 150,000-300,000 new accounts being created on the Fediverse. That expectation has already been met.
This #RedditMigration is fundamentally changing the course of the Fediverse. It’s moved the Fediverse from being primarily about microblogging to having more eclectic use cases.
While the #TwitterMigration validated that decentralized social media can appeal to millions of people, the #RedditMigration has validated that decentralized social media has man varied applications – both in the software and use case sense.
While we might disagree on the software ethics aspects, important even for #FOSS, we do agree on the tech side (in the #LemmyFork thread, I try to explain why #DeveloperEthics do matter from (11/n) to (15/n):
Hello fellow kbinner... kbinnite... kbinmate... what's the word we're calling each other again? Anyway, I feel the same way.
One of the main reasons why I didn't choose lemmy was explicitly because the kind of red authoritarian crowd they seemed to attract. Sure, there's gonna be people like that on kbin as well, but so far it's been pretty decent from my point of view.
Ngl, the drama is pretty nice when you're not involved in it 🍿
Hey everyone. I'm new to all this - as are most people I realize - but I've been really enjoying Lemmy so far. I'm subscribed to alternatives here of subreddits I frequented on Reddit and been participating in discussions and engaging with the communities as well. Overall, it's been good!...
Ah I see. I just tested by making a pretty general post/topic on the sub which showed on both kbin and Lemmy. Does this mean I've created a new community for lemmy by doing this (or at least a copy community of the one on kbin just reposting the discussions and sharing the information from one platform to the other?)
EDIT: I think I understand now and understand I didn't "create" the new community.
Hello from kbin. Sometimes federating/syncing communities can take a while, and you may not see things right away if you're the first in your instance to subscribe to a community. In theory, things should sync 100% once federation and subscribing to a community occurs. In practice things aren't always perfect.
Lemmy users should be able to see and participate in kbin threads though.
Defederation drama hits the #threadiverse, but with the twist of community/group dynamics being a major factor: see discussion with important links here: https://lemmy.ml/post/1281130
Here defederation is concerned with open signups (lemmy.world) and beehaw’s ability to moderate effectively, where they’re finding lemmy’s tools lacking, on which see this thread on an upcoming review: https://hachyderm.io/@thisismissem/110550824230711531 (@thisismissem).
TLDR: lemmy/kbin aren’t ready yet, need 6mnths-2yrs to mature
Ok technically maybe. But I don't think moderation can be scaled and/or divided into chunks like we usually expect in the fediverse. That's a major headache for anyone thinking they might want to be an owner.
The attraction of a subreddit thread where some participants can't see the others and/or where one has to sign up to multiple Lemmy or kbin instances to see all the communities/subreddits/conversations that one wants is going to put many people off.
Hi! I didn't know you were here (kbin only switched federation on yesterday)
and... um... so now there are 3 new eurovision places😭 I don't know what's the best thing to do! I'm new to all this...
It's great that you're here though:)
edit: I'll message you about this a bit later (can't seem to do that from here right now, so I might have to sign up to feddit) - def want to try and help get a community going somewhere.
New to kbin - and don't know if is me who is a dummy, but couldn't find out how to upload a video. Is that a setting that need to changed to the magazine @bor2098 ? Anyway, big ups for creating this magazine!
Can I follow a kbin magazine from Lemmy?

Was anyone else surprised to see Kbin being written in PHP?

Is lemmy.ml just a tankie recruitment zone? (lemmy.ml)
The shear amount of tankiness over on lemmy.ml is making me seriously consider leaving the platform.
