I think the last really big hurdle to an actually democratized internet is that we need to make it easier to host at home.
Asymmetrical download upload is such a fucking pain. I would rather have 100 down and 100 up then 400 down and 5 up like I currently do.
On top of that, there aren't a lot of good systems in place to enable me to host a website from home. If IPv6 were common it would be easy for me to secure a static IP address and to point that to my DNS resolver and attach my domain, but since I've got to be on an ipv4 system since no provider in my area provides an on-ramp to IPv6 and even if they did the Grand majority of Internet users cannot resolve IPv6 addresses, it's dead in the water.
If every person in America had symmetrical upload download and a static IPv6 address for their home, we could get rid of the grand majority of the content provider and hosts and instead use democratized systems like bluesky and Kbin and Mastodon and free tube without having to worry about these multi trillion dollar companies' bottom lines.
The internet has made a lot of people armchair experts happy to offer their perspective with a degree of certainty, without doing the work to identify gaps in their knowledge. Often the mark of genuine expertise is knowing the limitations of your knowledge....
One of the things that irated me most from Reddit was the fact that if someone's response came quickly enough, upvotes will ensure everyone believe it and downvoting it was like peeing on a wildfire.
I like that kbin shows both upvotes and downvotes which tells me when something is controversial enough to give it some thought rather than believe it blindly.
All my Reddit comments have just said “Comment redacted in protest against Reddit’s deranged attacks against third party apps, the community, and common sense. See you’ll in Lemmy or Kbin once this embarrassment of a site is done enshittifying itself out of existence. Monetize this, u/spez, you greedy little pigboy. 🖕” since I edited them before moving here. 🤷♂️
Note that it’s making a request to kbin.social with ?format=jpg&thumbnail=96 parameters in the CSS – which results in the full image being loaded since kbin doesn’t run pictrs.
The versions in use on reddthat (according to the settings page) are:
Yeah, I can see your history on pc. On mobile though, it insists you’ve never made any comments before this post. Probably kbin has some different api or something.
I've created accounts on lemmy, reddthat, and here last summer (I have problems accessing Bee Haw, though), though I haven't been active much until perhaps now as my reddit account of the same name has been suspended the 4th time, and they also got a few of my alts (I wasn't ban evading, gaming points or the like). I've probably made most of my comments on kbin.
You'll see the upvotes from all federated instances. Downvotes are not federated evenly. Kbin is like that, I assume fedia.io is the same. I don't see the downvotes I get on Lemmy instances. Sometimes that's a good thing.
People downvoting this post: don’t shoot the messenger.
I’ll copypaste what I said in !redditmigration about this topic:
As I mentioned in the kbin comm about redditfugees: I think that the platform stopped being sustainable, and that changes like this - either trying to increase engagement or appeasing power users - are only a symptom of that.
They won’t work, by the way, because of the trust thermocline (the impact of an act violating the users’ trust is considerably greater, if there’s a backstory of trust violations).
…excuse me while I grab some popcorn. I’m loving to watch this.
Fun comment (from a user) in that thread:
Because it’s a Reddit Product Decision, you can always expect one step forward, two steps back, and four steps off in a random direction that makes no sense. FAQ Can people who used all their gold due to your short-sighted mistake get it back? Haha, no. Are you offering any compensation? Sure, we’ll give you some free bullshit. And it expires, so make sure to Drive Engagement and Interact with Posts before the end of the year! Wait, you’re replacing the stuff you made arbitrarily expire with a different arbitrarily-expiring currency? You know it. Can you use Gold that people give you on other posts? Absolutely not. Gold you are given goes into a big pot where it will remain, serving no purpose, unless you’re like the 0.1% of people on this site who ruthlessly and relentlessly farm for gold and karma. If you’re one of those people, you can financialize your Reddit experience, earning upwards of, like, five bucks! I run a subreddit that provides resources for people in mental health crisis or other major medical issues. Can I turn off gilding to stop people boosting bad or unsafe answers? At Reddit, we believe that consumers deserve choice, and in this case, the choice they deserve is to seethe and cope. You absolutely cannot turn this shit off. You’re at least blacklisting the really high-risk subs from the new old Gold program, right? Yes. What happens when you inevitably miss a sub and end up causing massive headaches for mods? They can contact us at the Mod Help PO Box in Anchorage, Alaska. When the intern checks the mail in 6 months, we’ll get right on it. What if I’m not eligible for the Contributors program? Go fuck yourself. Does it work on Old Reddit? What do you think?
Additional detail: did anyone notice that you can’t log through old.reddit any more? I don’t even have an account there any more, but if you try it, here’s what you get:
Hach ja, nun ist es hoch offiziell, dass Reddit nun deine Daten für OpenAI sammelt. Alternativen diesbezüglich im Fediverse hatte ich schon länger her vorgeschlagen, das ist @LemmyDev und/oder @kbin, die nicht an deine kostenlosen Daten verdienen (profitieren).
»OpenAI darf Reddit-Daten nutzen:

»Lemmy and Kbin: The Best Reddit Alternatives?
Love #Reddit but tired of what's happening to it? We check out #Lemmy and #Kbin, two open-source fediverse #alternative's that are growing fast.«
Sometimes what I’m interested in may be more specific or niche, but a lot of search engines and filtering systems don’t seem to provide a way to drill down to those results. What may be some reasons behind that?...
That requires turning every read into a write – which is slow/expensive generally. (That might not matter much for Google – who try to record everything you ever do already, basically – but it matters for everyone else.)
Also, it tends to promote spam and offensive niche content. kbin’s got a sidebar that tries to promote random low activity communities and posts, for example, and it’s almost uncanny how much crap it pushes up…
You mean Nijimiss? I'm running the searches for that within Kbin Social, and not the opposite, and tinkering with the VPN, Kbin doesn't seem to have problems with EU IPs (isn't it from Poland? I have the impression I read something on that previously).
The story of DeviantArt, a community site now overwhelmed by content from AI bots and which is itself selling user content to train AI, reads like a cautionary tale for Reddit.
The saving grace is there’s no Reddit alternative for users upset about their content being sold to AI companies
No matter, how you connect to the Fediverse, be if, for example, Misskey, Sharkey, Ice Shrimp, Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Kbin, or by other means, the Fediverse instance you're using cost money. In the real world, web hosting, bandwidth, and storage space cost, money. And the more members who use and join your Fediverse instance (server), the more resources and the most it cost.
I earned by badge, by reaching out to my administrator, and helping them by donating. And while if it was not required to make a donation or regular contribution, I like using the Fediverse. It is ad-free and decentralized, meaning, someone like Elon Musk, cannot change things for everyone, everywhere, solely on their latest mood swing. So I made the choice to help fund my corner of the collective social media network, known as the Fediverse.
Five days ago I made this magazine on Kbin social but wanted to test out mbin so I decided to make it here as well. I look forward to seeing how this magazine turns out....
