Did you actually try mbin? Because we fixed a huge number of federation issues kbin had/has. Sure a bunch still need to be worked on, but we do our best and improve it with every release
Not a fan of Melroy(mbin founder). They claim to have been a dev for Lemmy and kbin. Then when they didn’t get the control they wanted, started their own instance. When that didn’t take off, he ranted very publically once again about how the current team he was “working with” sucked and how he was the only true savior of the fediverse. Then he started mbin, which he named after himself(Melroy Bin).
His entire attitude has been “fuck you, I’m taking my ball and going home if you don’t listen to me” from the start.
I’ve always liked Kbin’s design and funcionality more than Lemmy, but the latter is more popular and sometimes posts/comments won’t load properly on Kbin, so I’ve stuck with Lemmy for now.
well I am an active mbin contributor and cannot confirm any of that. He never tried to contribute to lemmy as far as I know and trying to contribute to kbin is just a big disappointment (I've been there as well). As for the name, personally I don't care. It is just how it is and nowhere does it say "this is melroys bin" or something like that...
If you don't want to get involved that is fine, but the rumors around him are basically all false...
Everyone in this thread is suggesting Mbin, so I might try that. Sounds like it’s a fork of Kbin that actually solved a ton of its federation issues with Lemmy.
Totally different implementations of activitypub servers, for one thing.
Kbin/mbin were also designed to try to support both interfacing with micro blogging (as in Mastodon and a few others) and with Threads (as in Lemmy and a couple others).
It’s pretty good overall, and I started on kbin, but I’ve found myself using Lemmy instead for a while, mostly because of better clients on mobile. And a handful of technical/design issues on kbin that were annoying me (although some have been improved since)
I found the Lemmy frontends to be all kinda crappy and lacking in options.
Alexandrite for example aligns its content to the far left side of the screen, which is super annoying on a widescreen monitor, which are like almost all desktop monitors nowadays. It also does not show any NSFW / 18+ marked thumbnails, just some hyperlink symbol. Thumbnails are also very small and do not fill out their available space in compact mode like they do on kbin / mbin.
My client isn't working properly, so here is the raw URL.
ETA: he's a DC, but still makes valid points and the whole video is < 10 minutes, so less time wasted than me on kbin, trying to make this post. Not sure if it's kbin or my device, or network latency, and I have studies to attend to. My apologies for lack of proper formatting, etc
Our #Reddit only needs 4 more users to get it to 3,500 members! Come on over and join the sub for quality content, tech support, and a growing community.
How is the size of Lemmy’s userbase changing? Is it growing or shrinking? How diverse is it? What do the current trendlines look like as we approach a year since Rexxit?...
I keep thinking of ditching Kbin for Lemmy, because Kbin is down more often than I'd like, and I presume Lemmy is healthier. However, I've gotten quite used to this place, and am not eager to start anew elsewhere.
BTW, at least in my experience, kbin fails to federate a lot of content properly, leading to communities and posts seeming A LOT emptier than they actually are
I would suggest looking at other Kbin instances outside of kbin.social. or look to mbin, which is a fork that in told is more stable. I also haven't made the jump from Kbin, but have been having similar issues with usability with it for awhile.
Tbh I think the #Threadiverse like #Lemmy and #kbin would make a lot more sense if they were simply frontends and perhaps a backend too but just for the forums themselves. IOW, no accounts live in Lemmy or kbin, all users post from their preferred #fediverse account instead.
Sure you can already technically do that from your #Mastodon or #Misskey or whatever fedi you're in, but that means using whatever app you're on right now, which almost certainly means it's not a #linkaggregator UI. Not ideal at all.
If I had any good programming skills I'd make it so that the link aggregator is merely a client that uses the Mastodon (with #Pleroma extensions too) and Misskey APIs, treat (almost) all #ActivityPub actors as their own forums or subs, and each post would be a boost from said actor. Users authenticate from their preferred fedi account. Voting would be tallied by few special actors, which internally receive votes via direct messages (the app will make this transparent, but this also means you can technically vote without the app if you know the exact command), which will effectively make votes secret to non-admins like in #Reddit. Users can also choose which vote counters they want to rely from.
This would make the fediverse-powered link aggregator very flexible and minimal, imo. It may look janky but that's the general idea I have. :seija_coffee:
I dunno how many here have given it a try yet, or simply don’t ever intend to but are nevertheless a little curious, so I’m putting down some notes here....
Firstly, sorry for any potential derailment. This is a comment about the Markdown used in your post (I wouldn’t normally mention it, but consider it fair game since this is a ‘Fediverse’ community).
The spec for lemmy’s spoiler format is colon-colon-colon-space-spoiler. If you miss out the space, then whilst other Lemmy instances can reconstitute the Markdown to see this post as intended, Lemmy itself doesn’t generate the correct HTML when sending it out over ActivityPub. This means that other Fediverse apps that just look at the HTML (e.g. Mastodon, KBIN) can’t render it properly.

Also, if you add a horizontal rule without a blank line above it, Markdown generally interprets this as meaning that you want the text above it to be a heading. So anything that doesn’t have the full force of Lemmy’s Markdown processor that is currently trying to re-make the HTML from Markdown now has to deal with the ending triple colons having ‘h2’ tags around it.

The good news is that Lemmy is now surrounding your spoilers with the expected Details and Summary tags, and moving the HR means PieFed is able to interpret the Markdown for both spoilers.
The bad news:
It turns out KBIN doesn’t understand Details/Summary tags (even though a browser on it own does, so that’s KBIN’s problem).
Neither PieFed, or KBIN, or MS Edge looking at raw HTML can properly deal with a list that starts at ‘0’.
Lemmy is no longer putting List tags around anything inside the spoilers. (so this post now looks worse on KBIN. Sorry about that KBIN users)
People are joining federated Reddit alternatives because of the sorry state Reddit is in, so most users here are ex-Redditors (myself included, but I quit Reddit a long time before Lemmy launched). Anyone familiar with Reddit knows that the userbase is politically diverse, and that there are plenty of unhinged shitheads.
Lemmy’s core developers are openly Communist, and run lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml. I may not be on the same page politically with them but I’m not dropping my support for the platform over it. If anything, I like the idea of Communism as a philosophy for running an Internet community moreso than I would for governing a nation. Though there are plenty of people who consider Communist ideas of any kind to be a dealbreaker and join Kbin and Mbin instances as a result.
Anti-communists do tend to trend towards reactionary politics, so you end up seeing that kind of thing a lot more from non-Lemmy instances. Similarly to how conservative-leaning users choose Pleroma et al over Mastodon, since antifascism is a core philosophy of Mastodon’s mission (being a German nonprofit and all).
Though the far-left users on Lemmy do also tend to adopt a reactionary anti-Biden stance, but definitely not for the same reasons.
I tried it with Naylib but vertex colors don't render properly. It seems to me like there may have been a Raylib regression unless there's something wrong or something I need to add to my own code. And that's using OBJ.
Godot 3.X could work, but there doesn't seem to be a way of importing that gives everything a common material aside from manually assigning them to every instance (unless there's a trick, perhaps mesh library that works without a gridmap, that I'm missing). Though I suspect multiple materials (say if I wanted matte+metal+glass) in one object that might be more difficult to have happen on import. With Naylib I should be able to export models without a material at all, at the very least.
EDIT: Also if this doesn't interest you (though it seems like it's right in-line w/OpenGL) a small thing to add is that it's neat how Kbin shows the other threads w/the same title as a crosspost. I'm not sure if I noticed it before, but it really works here.
fucking beautiful. almost a year into the 'verse and its starting to become more functional than that R place... better than i imagined. (cdn.catsweat.com)
