I was somewhat skeptical of multi-color prints on the Bambu Lab printers using the AMS but now that I've started to design things I'm trying to be efficient and I've got it down to a single color change after the first layer and there is no tower of wasted filament.

For these prints it's just a single layer of text on the bottom but I'm pleased with the very minimal print time it adds and almost zero waste.

Minor Update re the tool I've been working on for a friend for whom Apple's palm rejection absolutely refuses to work.

We've prototyped the cover + hole shape over the trackpad & it got a 👍. Now I've gone back and added 4mm thick leather wrist wrests & there's an internal cable run for charging the trackpad.

the lighter colored "wood" in the picture is a magnetically attached plate that we can swap out if he / anyone else needs a different hole shape.

I have the pao'er! Yet another 3D printed @Playactiontoys Star Wars action figure toy model was released last week. My weekends have been jammed lately, but I was able to complete Rogue One's Pao in good time - thanks, again, to https://twitch.tv/MakerDeck for helping make making a community thing.

#plasticity3d for designing small functional #3dprinting parts (electronics cases, ...), worth trying?
From having used FreeCAD/SolveSpace/Fusion before I really like the constraint based modeling, but something less cumbersome would also be nice. Shapr3d looks really nice but the subscription & cost is putting me off. Plasticity's pricing & perpetual licensing would be acceptable.

The free version of Fusion would work, but the UX & app streaming experience is horrible, do not want.

Say I wanted to do #3Dmodeling (for #3Dprinting), which #CAD software should I go for? Maker, selling some stuff. Parametric is a must.

I use #Shapr3D which is great but getting pricier ($300/year). My subscription is up for renewal and I’m on the fence. I don’t know if I want to get into #Fusion360 because I don’t trust Autodesk (free for <$1000 profit, $680/year otherwise).

Oddly enough, #SolidWorks has a maker version now ($48/year for <$2000 profit, a bajillion otherwise).

Anything else?

Couldn't find any super basic standing 10x15cm picture frames so I'm making my own. Also gives me the excuse to play around with Wood-PLA filament. :blahaj:
Picture in the frame can be found here: https://wallpapersafari.com/w/ZQDWmM

Going to be on my profile once completed (same as the new Rock Pi 4C+ case I didn't upload yet).

Expecting some circuit boards today maybe. Exciting - my first use of right through to actually producing PCBs, though I've worked up a few schematics in the past, and one other PCB layout.

Haven't bought any new boards for a project in a couple of years either, so it's nice for that reason too.

Happy to have dumped from my tool set.

Yay - my circuit boards arrived yesterday evening.

Have been playing with getting a good fit into my unusually-shaped enclosure and think I've managed it. A hot soldering iron is very useful for sculpting changes in the 3Dprinted shell.

Accidental fumes from PLA are thankfully not too nasty – a bit sweet smelling.

Here's some illustrative imagery.

Yes, it looks like a large kumquat, and not by accident. The "yellow" solder resist on the boards is nicely a bit more on the orange side of the spectrum than the photo captures, making it rather on-theme with my plastics.

From the category: "Is that normal?"

I got my first spool prusament PLA and recognized some interesting behavior. After each print, I have to pull out the filament and snip off 7-8 mm of material cause it inflates during the cool down of the printer inside the extruder.

I know that silk PLA inflates but only outside the nozzle.I thought about heatkreep but this would also happen during the print which does not happen in my case🤔

This only happens with prusament, all others don't🤷

Today’s quick 3d print of a “pill placer" for our old dog. Big enough for the capsules he has to take 3x a day and hopefully more accurate and less intrusive than my fingers, with less chance of a munched finger.

Wife wanted the ability to take unit apart for cleaning, which first design wasn't well suited for. This one is just two parts, super easy to print and assemble. I need to make the ring a bit bigger and then I'll post it to Printables.
