I really can't believe, after all this time they've spent banging on about the ECHR, they still haven't grasped that the Good Friday Agreement is contingent on us being a signatory. As is the post-Brexit Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU. That "oven ready" one that took five years to negotiate and we still haven't fully implemented.
GPLB: "UK withdrawal from ECHR would have 'dramatic consequences' for people in Northern Ireland, says senior MEP" #UKPolitics#ECHR#Brexit#GFA
As the Nasty Party is rattling this sabre again ask yourself: how many of these rights would you be happy to leave in trust to the feckless liars, yobbos and charlatans that infest Westminster?
Looking at this list of the benefits of (continued) membership of the European Convention on Human Rights, its perhaps not so hard to see what the swivel-eyed, right-wing nut-job tendency have against it....
When you're conducting a #classwar, pushing a #racist agenda on #imigration, or just trying to curtail popular criticisms of what you are doing for you (political) chums, these are all a but too inconvenient!
Jesus.
Former Supreme Court Justice, Lord Sumption, in an interview yesterday on LBC, with Andrew Marr.
"Woke leftists quite often make the lazy and illogical claim that leaving the ECHR will mean we would 'lose our human rights'." #FFS#UKPolitics#ECHR
Look everyone, Sunak's found another bandwagon he can fall off as soon as he gets asked a tricky question, like "why do we need to leave the ECHR?" 🙄😡 #UKPolitics#Immigration#RefugeesWelcome#ECHR
Right right right. I'm sure they'll be falling over themselves to help us out by contrevening it's own charter. FFS. 🤬
GPLB: "Cleverly suggests government wants to get European court of human rights to change way it operates, rather than leave it" #UKPolitics#RwandaBill#ECHR
Start your engines: every Tory who's after Sunak's job post-election is jumping on the "ECHR is to blame for us being shit" bandwagon.
The Times: "Ben Wallace: Human rights laws are protecting terrorists
Ex-defence secretary attacks ‘lunacy’ of legislation such as the ECHR that prevents the UK carrying out raids abroad to capture suspects" https://archive.ph/8Qwjh #UKPolitics#ECHR#RefugeesWelcome#HumanRights
Talk among Tories of leaving the ECHR is reaching fever pitch (again), so its as well to be reminded about what the consequences of leaving the European Convention on Human Rights would & wouldn't be.
Whatever the practical issues, as Joelle Grogan (King's College) concludes, not only would it encourage further withdrawals, leaving the ECHR would be one more element in the destruction of the UK's (already floundering) global reputation, with further consequences.
Brexit Wars part II: Right-wing Conservatives want Britain out of the European Convention on Human Rights.
For years, UK Conservatives seeking right-wing support have floated idle threats to pull Britain out of Europe’s top human rights treaty. This time, they might actually mean it.
It would be a seismic decision. The only European nations that are not members are Russia — expelled last year after invading Ukraine — and Belarus.
He's cracked it! Put him in charge of the election campaign immediately 😂
Jake Berry (in an interview with Sky News) says of course we should leave the ECHR because Canada and Australia aren't members and they're doing just fine. 🙄
GPLB: "Cleverly says bill 'pushing at edge of envelope' but still 'within framework of international law'
[He] says the supreme court’s judgment was based on the facts from 18 months ago."
Those Supreme Court judges, eh? What do they know? 🤬 #TogetherWithRefugees#ECHR#FuckTheTories
Aaaand it's another kick in the balls for Sunak 😂
GPLB: "ECHR says Ireland has lodged inter-state case against UK over Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act"
"The [European] Convention [on Human Rights] was drafted [...] in the aftermath of the horror of the Second World War, but over 70 years ago. And it's now clearly been overtaken by events"
— Conservative and Unionist Party MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, House of Commons, 2024-05-14
The European Convention on Human Rights "encompasses a right to effective protection by the State authorities from the serious adverse effects of climate change".
The Swiss government "failed to comply with its duties", including its failure "to quantify, through a carbon budget or otherwise, national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions limitations", and "to meet its past GHG emission reduction targets".
I think what Nige means is "big thanks to the lefty human rights lawyers who went to an elitist court to uphold my right to free association under the ECHR".
The good news:
Shabana Mahmood, the Labour shadow justice secretary has come out forcefully in support of the ECHR....
The bad news:
Shabana Mahmood, the Labour shadow justice secretary thinks the solution to the UK prison problem is to build more prisons....
And while she is right, 'Change will not happen overnight... We cannot wave a magic wand & return our legal system to its former glory'... lets hope at least the mood music will change quickly!
Ukraine beats Russia in European Court of Human Rights case filed by Moscow (www.pravda.com.ua)
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has fully dismissed all of Russia's claims against Ukraine in a complaint filed in 2021.
