Indigenous peoples have been steadily warning about the impacts of renewable energy development on their lands and communities, but some see a way to harness this trend for the positive.

Experts say Indigenous communities can play a leading role in the clean energy transition through partnerships that allow them to produce and benefit from renewable energy projects.

It’s historic: Mexico has elected its first-ever female as President — Claudia Sheinbaum — in its 200 year history who is ALSO a climate scientist!

Sheinbaum’s has a Ph.D. in engineering & has promised to invest nearly $14 billion in clean energy & boost electric buses & trains.

Sheinbaum also worked unpaid on two major reports issued by the IPCC.

In an era of climate consequence we also see rays of hope shining through!

Transition pains:

"As the market and its regulators navigate the turbulence of an system transitioning from fossil fuels to , experts warn surges [in the spot price] are likely to become more common. The ageing -fired power station fleet is becoming less reliable, and with the development of large-scale renewables and storage lagging, the potential gap between demand and supply is getting larger."

A rare moment when a video title is not clickbait. Great report from DW Planet A on energy system inefficiencies. I've wonder whether talking more about efficiency and waste to climate skeptics might bring them on board with green policies. Personally, I don't care how we do it, as long as we get to the same end result of a more sustainable world.

Ahh, the great Labour bullshit about what it can do for Scotland begins. Only Labour can bring these jobs to Scotland. Of course, for as long as is important, Scotland has been an energy exporter. These jobs are not to provide power for Scotland per se, but London.

Frankly, Scotland could nationalise it's energy market, give free energy to its citizens, and still probably profit on exports to the South.

This is literally a nothingburger.

#AI #GenerativeAI #LLMs #DataCenters #BigTech #Energy #WaterScarcity #FossilFuels #ClimateChange: "Large language models such as ChatGPT are some of the most energy-guzzling technologies of all. Research suggests, for instance, that about 700,000 litres of water could have been used to cool the machines that trained ChatGPT-3 at Microsoft’s data facilities. It is hardly news that the tech bubble’s self-glorification has obscured the uglier sides of this industry, from its proclivity for tax avoidance to its invasion of privacy and exploitation of our attention span. The industry’s environmental impact is a key issue, yet the companies that produce such models have stayed remarkably quiet about the amount of energy they consume – probably because they don’t want to spark our concern.

Google’s global datacentre and Meta’s ambitious plans for a new AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) further underscore the industry’s energy-intensive nature, raising concerns that these facilities could significantly increase energy consumption. Additionally, as these companies aim to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, they may opt to base their datacentres in regions with cheaper electricity, such as the southern US, potentially exacerbating water consumption issues in drier parts of the world. Before making big announcements, tech companies should be transparent about the resource use required for their expansion plans."

"Floridians of both political parties are overwhelmingly concerned about the #cost of #energy in the state and Florida’s heavy reliance on natural gas as a source of electricity, according to a poll by a Republican strategy firm. It also found that environmental issues will factor into voters’ decisions in the 2024 election.
