Hey #R friends and nerds, I have a question that's stumping me.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/77357569/convert-country-names-into-their-native-language-using-r

How do I get a country's name in its native / official language?

I think I need some help.

I have a file which is ~10MB. Even when compressed it is about 2MB.

It provides a cluster of ~28k points displayed on a map.

Is there a sensible way to make this more efficient? Can I start will a small GeoJSON of just the clusters and then "stream" in more detailed files when users zoom in?

Finding Geospatial Accounts on Mastodon

Besides following hashtags, such as , , , and , curating good lists is probably the best way to stay up to date with geospatial developments. To get you started (or to potentially enrich your existing lists), I thought I'd share my and lists with you.

This is a bit of a long shot, but if there are any developers out there interested in mapping who would be willing to spend a bit of time helping a novice (me) out in some experiments to improve UX in web apps for sustainable transport planning, please get in touch.

[ | ] and/or folks:

before I rabbit hole this, is there a resource/tutorial/package out there where if I have a point on a 🇺🇸 map that I can

(a) enter a "max travel time" value (say, "45 minutes”) into a function to then get an radius for a circle overlay? i grok this will be an approximation.

(b) get the approximate population of said circular area?

Trying to build a "what if” simulator that will be FOSS.

If this exists already, def open to that too.

The most annoying things in data analysis:

  • R package/lib hell
  • basic Python API instability
  • conda solving envos for hours
  • lustre (all about it)
  • each R package having it's own class for genetic/trees/geospatial data storage.

I have freaking bingo of hitting all of them today at once.

Are there any I missed?

Looking for data? I curate a list of 3,000 addresses for government ArcGIS servers, from federal to local. Each week my code scans each address and any bad links are fixed or flagged. An updated list is usually posted each Wednesday.

The list is available as a PDF, csv and txt file. Another volunteer made an API - see p.2 of the PDF.

If water spills over the dam it will greatly worsen flooding in . I did not find any documentation showing at what height the water will flow over the dam.

I did not know edge bundling of trajectory data was such a niche use case, that it isn't widely adapted in Python.

I am trying to visualize some EU-wide mobility and edge bundling would be great. There are some cool non-geographic implementations around (Datashader, Holoviews), but they do not work well with geographic data and dataframes.

Luckily there are these obscure repositories with some implementations, but dunno whether I need to debug bunch of code.
