Exciting Personal Thing: I will be joining University of Bristol as a Lecturer, starting in April.
Exciting to be moving back to the city I called home for half my life, and to be returning to work alongside friends in the very excellent Bristol Interaction Group #HCI
Saying that interaction designers should learn from game designers is hopefully less controversial now than it was a decade ago when I started saying it. 😏 But if you've ever puzzled over points like
designing for people at different skill levels
facilitating growth
fostering motivation
and you don't know much about video games, try giving this a watch.
This used to be our future. #HCI Vision Videos if the 1980s + ’90s. Today we can contemplate on these concepts b/c not even a single video was reaching out as far as 2024.
Book with fun practical exercises to help people develop a vocabulary to imagine, conceptualise, NOVEL UI metaphors, widgets, affordances, patterns, taxonomies, navigation schemas & understanding their connection with social practices.
Very briefly: "The central charge of #HCI is to nurture and sustain human dignity and flourishing." But to get a seat at the table, we argued for legitimacy of our field on the basis of intermediate goals of UX, user delight, etc. Now, when "we want to speak beyond usability to broader concerns [...] we find that the legitimacy trap rules these topics as outside HCI's purview."
What was it like to work at Xerox PARC at its peak?
This guide for newcomers to the lab, published 40 years ago in 1983, introduces the computing and social environment of PARC. Lots of quirky systems and obscure lore.
@amoroso while I am too young to have worked at Xerox Parc back it's revolutionary times, it is in no small part that I do what I do now due to their ground breaking work on user interfaces. The desktop #gui is old hat now but was the gateway to computers for many. A certain Mr Jobs owed Parc a bit too :)
Excited to share the call for participation in a workshop on Conducting Research at the Intersection of HCI, HCD, and Health, with a focus on building and sustaining teams with different expertise. https://bit.ly/HCIHealthTeams
Options for participating virtually or co-located with CHI 2024.
