ln -s ~/.mozilla/native-messaging-hosts ~/.librewolf/native-messaging-hosts
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/native-messaging-hosts /usr/lib/librewolf/native-messaging-hosts

So much for the speil on the homepage saying that Firefox doesn't sell you out

This is why I use & on desktop and Brave on Android

I can't trust vanilla Firefox which is a shame because I was an early adopter

How to block on

Block ads on the web: Firefox + uBlock Origin.

A must have, if you want to browse the web without ads, trackers, malware and more. There are other browsers you could use, but with , you can install add-ons to help you mitigate all the tracking and ads. You can even install desktop only add-ons now, and supporting a engine which is not (controlled by Google) like every other major browser.

There are multiple forks available on the F-droid if you don't want to use plain firefox. This works on desktop too, I recommend .

Block ads on any app with: .

My favorite way of blocking ads, you have control over which domain the app can connect. It works like a VPN, but it does not make any outgoing connection. The bad thing is, if you want to use an actual , you can't have both at the same time and you need to disable your custom DNS.

I recommend to enable in settings > advanced options > block system apps, and individual domains too. When you open the app for the first time, it asks you if you want to block essential request for the apps to work, I recommend to enable this if you don't want apps breaking.

You android vendor may be killing the app, for this reason is necessary to add the app in the list of apps not be optimized by the system. If this issue keeps happening follow the guide from dontkillmyapp.com (advanced)

Official website: TrackerControl.org

Set a custom in the settings.

A DNS works like a translator, computers are good with numbers, but we are not good at memorizing long numbers. Computers communicate with each other using the Internet Protocol (IP), which are pure numbers. For example, your instance is 104.26.8.209 but is easier to us just type lemmy.world.

A DNS is like a table where it has a relationship between keys pointing lemmy.world to 104.26.8.209, so your computer knows where is the computer is trying to connect.

Let's imagine an app is trying to connect to "https://ads-from.company.com", if you are using a DNS which blocks known domain ads it will redirect that request to "0.0.0.0" which is like sending it to a black hole. There are multiple DNS available, which different purposes, for ads, malware, porn, gambling, etc.

VPN has a guide in how to use their DNS for multiple devices.

Alternative front-ends.

Have in mind that these are not full bulletproof protections, one may work better than the other, and can break from time to time. With popular services with ads, like social media, you could use alternative front-ends to their official client or website.

Here is a list of alternative front-ends and an add-on to automatically redirect to them, you have to use it with a browser and you can add as a shortcut to the home screen, better if it works like a https://libredirect.github.io

Alternative apps

  1. YouTube: NewPipe, LibreTube, NewPipe x SponsorBlock
  2. Twitter: Squawker
  3. YouTube Music: Harmony Music
  4. Twitch: Xtra, Twire

My favorite @librewolf issue:

https://codeberg.org/librewolf/issues/issues/770

"Add support for MacPorts "

"Since Homebrew is supported why not Macports too?"

Me: a MacPorts maintainer, "maybe because MacPorts actually builds things from source and Homebrew thinks its OK to just be a wrapper to installing a DMG?"

e.g. https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask/blob/56d6d85d58a73a2b481cd5d58216296dd4239e63/Casks/f/flightgear.rb

Bad example?

Well here's the Homebrew cask for LibreWolf itself:
https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask/blob/56d6d85d58a73a2b481cd5d58216296dd4239e63/Casks/l/librewolf.rb

Again it's just a wrapper to installing a DMG!

That's not building jack it.sh from source. I guess it does have a little smarts insomuch as it will determine if it is Intel or Apple Silicon (meanwhile, MacPorts still supports PPC/G4/G5/etc. vintage systems. Because: it actually BUILDS THINGS FROM SOURCE, it's not a precompiled binary distribution platform.).

What a bad joke Homebrew is.

Alas, LibreWolf's build instructions are uhhh, well they don't build on macOS, they cross compile from ???

I mean there are the not so convincing notes on building from source here:
https://codeberg.org/librewolf/source

But also linked from there is this:

https://gitlab.com/librewolf-community/browser/macos

Which reads: "Archived project! Repository and other project resources are read-only"

I sincerely have no idea how people on macOS build LibreWolf from source, from the project documentation itself. Homebrew, is of zero assistance, because Homebrew: also does not build LibreWolf from source.

Is there a smart way to store browser (internet addresses) that is completely independent of the browser used to access those addresses? The use case is in when is broken but I have stored my bookmarks on-line with them to make them available on any device I log into with my firefox account. Can one set up a cloud or home NAS or server bookmarks service that stores the addresses & makes them seamlessly available in etc. when logged in to that server?

Another idea to add to the mile long list in my head of ideas, soft fork Firefox and get rid of shit and do sane defaults (I hate having to tweak it every time I start with a clean Firefox). I know Librewolf exists but it breaks things despite promising not to, plus doesn't do all sane defaults.

Last week i used Vivaldi exclusively on Windows,Linux and iPhone and this week spent back on Brave and while i like their (Braves) privacy features and believe they offer more in this regard than Vivaldi their crypto focus is a big annoyance of mine.

So today went back to Vivaldi and one major annoyance really is how adress url autocomplete works so the upcoming 6.2 update should adress that and can´t come soon enough.

And no reader view on iPhone yet in Beta. Submitted a FR for it through TF feedback but im assuming it will come at some point. Oh, and sync of search engines does not work but hopefully it is also being worked on.
But Vivaldi on iPhone is shaping up quite nicely

And secondly why is there no merch shop in EU? 😅 I´d be happy to support with a purchase. But shipping and tax to get anything into Sweden from USA is a bit too much for me. Your HQ is next door (country wise) so not having shipping within EU is a bummer.

Just discovered that both Librewolf and Floorp are available through Flathub..

Librewolf I’m familiar with and have no special reason really to install more than try it out again since it’s been a while. I’ve already removed much of the junk from regular Firefox. And the OOTB experience of LW i don’t need, I use Mullvad Browser to cover that.

Floorp will be a new experience. Looks interesting and it gives me a Vivaldi:esque feeling. Always a bit iffy using something as important as a browser from someone new.
