Why Antarctic wildlife is being "sunburnt."

BBC reports: "A hole in the ozone layer — the protective barrier of gas in the upper atmosphere — now lingers over the frozen continent for more of the year."

About that ozone hole..

Doesn't seem to be healing very fast - not due to necessarily but a quirk of the system means a colder - which is delaying things.
Really good piece from my colleagues at DMI on it (in danish but DeepL works really well for translation):

"Alarming news from New Zealand scientists suggests the layer might not be recovering after all.

The research published in Nature Communications suggests the Antarctic ozone layer has reduced by 26% since 2004, contrary to previous reports of recovery by actions taken under an agreement called the Montreal Protocol.

The authors say and aerosols together with greenhouse gas emissions probably explain recent setbacks with record large, long-lived ozone holes re-emerging over Antarctica during Spring since 2020." https://cosmosmagazine.com/earth/climate/ozone-layer-not-recovering/

Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.

We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.

Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.

"We need to [search] under every stone to try find ways to mitigate ."

It's not just about , that's truly limited and inefficient thinking.

All are a problem, including ().

Just as we successfully acted to save the layer, we can do Everything, Everywhere, All at Once to preserve what remains of our total .

It's terrifying and critical but it's not hopeless, it's possible.

Dear @susankayequinn,
Same thing here in . The 5 July morning after was similar to your reading. That said, the smoke continues to be a problem, coming and going. Today, however, will be the primary pollutant coming as it does from combustion.
