I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like that are using open formats like for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.

I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.

Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.

Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇

I've seen the hype and warned the users of long-term lock-in effects. Then OneNote failed and people lost (parts of) their data.

I've seen the hype and it happened again.

Now, I see the hype. (At least the file format is an open one.)

🤷

If you want to spare yourself some effort, think of starting with a solution with no lock-in: https://karl-voit.at/orgmode/

I'd like to use a workflow where each message that gets bookmarked by me is automatically screenshotted to PNG, archived in a local directory and its text content + image descriptions get added to a text file (preferably ) together with a link to the screenshot and the original message URL.

Somebody willing to volunteer? 🙇

Learned about a nice idea today:
Tagging your according to mood and energy level best suited to the task:

E.g.
todos for when you are exhausted and just want to relax: watch that movie you always wanted to see
Todo for when you are motivated and full of energy: get that thing started you've been putting off.
Todos for when you want to do something to pass the time or focus thoughts on something mundane.

Etc.

I was interviewed by @jarango for his #Podcast #TheInformedLife about #Emacs and #Orgmode: https://theinformed.life/2023/10/22/episode-125-karl-voit/

He also includes a full transcript along the shownotes. 👍

Listen in, it was much fun for me, talking about #PIM and how Emacs is supporting here.

For my German followers: on Nov. 10, https://focusonlinux.podigee.io/episodes will feature a German episode on Emacs with me and others.

You /really/ need to write one single request per . Just one.

Today, I wrote something like:

"I assume that we did not do X. If this is true, I'll do X and send the result via email. Would you be the receiving contact?"

I got a yes for the receiving contact.

Then I did X which cost me an hour or so. I sent the result to the given address just to get an answer "I just realized we've already did X". 🤦‍♂️

Never assume that people are able to follow two requests in one email.

Today I bought my first since decades and it shall be one of my daily drivers from now on.

It's a stainless steel fine.

However, due to my advanced processes, I rarely write things down on .

I'd love to do so much more if there would be a great solution for offline . That would be a great investment by the industry! 🤔

It still offers better solutions compared to my tablet.

My Faber Castell pencil, my Fisher space pen and the Lilliput by Kaweco. The latter two are for being available through my trousers pockets while being away from my computer. I use the pencil for short term notes captured on paper.

This small function is probably a game-changer in my personal experience:

From https://www.emacs.dyerdwelling.family/emacs/20240305160708-emacs--unified-interface-for-switching-contexts/ (he's not on the Fediverse as far as I know) I stole the code and created my-switch-to-thing() for switching to:

  • buffers
  • recent-files
  • bookmarks
  • slots
  • directories
... with one single command. 🤩

This replaces multiple "jump to"-commands in my setup.

You can find my adapted version in https://github.com/novoid/dot-emacs/blob/master/config.org

Alt-9 is mapped to switching to the last tab. Also very handy!

Is there some way to switch to the previous tab of the same Firefox window? 🤔

"New seemingly sends sensitive data to "

Especially in IT, trust is everything and working with different solutions and providers is always a matter of trust. The possible fact that Microsoft’s new Outlook-offshout is seemingly sending sensitive data to Redmond could shake the world IT to its very foudations - years after the once acquired mobile Outlook-app did the same.

I do write a lot about Personal Information Management (PIM) topics, I did some PIM research about local file management, I love to give lectures on PIM topics.

Therefore, it's quite natural that people start to believe that my personal PIM situation is near perfect.

thanks for sharing that, i think it helps a lot to approach a better set of tools and workflow to light up that there is no perfect solution even for those who practice the subject deeply and for a long time.

I never took any strong pattern to organize things until it became a problem when i first had a disk crash a long time ago. when rebuilding things i tried many ways to do things and organize like 15 years ago.
but things began to be way easier to find and organize when i read about your python tools and your orgmode posts. thanks for this !

I recently explained two different colleagues working in the IT the basic concept of a template page you need to copy for a new meeting. 🤷

xro,
@xro@chaos.social avatar

@publicvoit

Reminds me of my colleagues faces when I told them to just use office template files, so that people would no longer misname copies of existing files or mistakenly change last weeks document.

Since opening templates always results in a new unsaved unnamed document. 👍

If those services could be easily replaced by any Markdown edtor and a decent sync mechanism, why are they using those services in the first place? 🤷

I'm going to blog about that to make it more clearer.
