I'm reading a review of The Creator that goes on about the implications of Tyrell Corp's motto "more human than human" in Blade Runner, scoffs at the White Zombie relation, then never once notes it's a nod to Theodore Sturgeon. It's amazing how some people can be simultaneously famous yet totally unheard of.
I see you like #bladerunner do you mean the book or the movie or both? It's been a while since I've read #pkd but I feel he's more relevant now than ever.
PKD writing presciently about our current information age?
"It is like information theory; it is noise driving out signal. But it is noise posing as signal so you do not even recognize it as noise...If you can float enough disinformation into circulation you will totally abolish everyone’s contact with reality, probably your own included."
Philip K. Dick, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer
Through the ebb and flow of the algorithmic tides, a snipped of #PKD (a lovely bit of Dick) I posted nine months ago is blowing up in the 'Tubes: https://youtu.be/zPAiTyBcHTw
#Movie: Total Recall (1990). P.K. Dick invites us to ponder: is Douglas Quaid a humble construction worker who dreams that he's a secret agent on Mars, or is it the other way around? A. Schwarzenegger's and S. Stone's involvement makes the answer kind of obvious. And there's about half an hour of gratuitous fight scenes. Grade: OK.
@mrundkvist
In my own head canon the Philip K. Dick short story infects the logic of the movie which leaves you with two very different interpretations.
1 - The reality of the situation is so fantastic that no conventional story logic can invalidate it (anything that you would interpret as clues are just independent coincidences or reversed logic)
2 - If you can't accept #1 then absolutely nothing can be trusted
Viewed this way it's a superior #PKD experience imho #SciFi#movies#totalrecall
We Can Remember It for You Wholesale
Those TVs that play high speed “craft” videos in bars and airports are deploying blipverts a la MAXHEADROOM and if this keeps going ima die of a seizure
@futurebird for me those are a good example of 'prediction or inspiration?'
A lot of #PKDick is that way, too. If you go to Technovelgy & browse the #PKD category it's a catalog of social-control #DarkPatterns. The world should be grateful he didn't go into advertising. He'd've still crashed & burned personally but been orders of magnitude more influential than Jay Chiat, who did more than enough damage with just his own deeply-limited intellect. http://technovelgy.com/ct/AuthorTotalAlphaList.asp?AuNum=13
"It’s increasingly looking like this may be one of the most hilariously inappropriate applications of AI that we’ve seen yet." I am riveted by the extensive documentation of how ChatGPT-powered Bing is now completely unhinged. @simon has chronicled it beautifully here: https://simonwillison.net/2023/Feb/15/bing/
I did not know the game but, yes, some speedreading helped, you are right, except for two things:
it will not be humerous but rather like #PKD's prescient #SecondVariety setting and
the "Computer's arbitrary, contradictory and often nonsensical security directives" are a non-issue. They will be like moves in an n-dimensional chess game, being (re)calculated with super-human speed...
