I am never in my life going to get a letter trying to sell me insurance and go, "Okay, sold!" Unsolicited mail is not how anyone shops in this century.

And why do these creepy high-T weirdos think stamping a little headshot on the letter will seal the deal? They look like a father-son murder team.

As you may know, my dad passed away recently. Please help my mom get legal guardianship of my brother. He's unable to care for himself and is currently a ward of the state.

A few nights ago, I dreamed I was coming up with a song and starting to record the chorus on my phone when an alarm went off and interrupted me. That was my real alarm on my phone, so I woke up and continued recording the song. It's called "Support," and I may actually finish it one of these days.

Been thinking a lot about how Henry Ford was a literal Nazi whose big contribution was devaluing human labor by reducing people's jobs to mindless unskilled repetition, and how the products made cheaply in this way get marked way up so that the only people who really benefit are the ones running the factories.

I just checked out this social reading app called , and I'm impressed. It lets you import all your lists and reviews from , so there's no need to keep supporting Jeff Bezos. I'm starting a book club there for anyone interested.

Call me crazy, but when I'm hanging out with somebody, I'm honestly not trying to picture their junk to decide if what they've told me about their gender might somehow be wrong. None of my business! You tell me your pronouns and I'll believe you. Just like if you tell me how to pronounce your name I'm not gonna argue about it.

In case it wasn’t clear what kind of person the new Speaker Mike Johnson is, here is an OpEd he wrote advising that states should “discriminate” against “homosexual conduct” and suggesting they pass laws around “sexual conduct outside marriage.” He is a Christo-Nationalist zealot. Of “The Handmaid’s Tale” variety.

@georgetakei The only good thing about the new Speaker of the House is that his name is really easy to make fun of: Micro Johnson.

You know he's gonna try and make a run for president as soon as he gets a chance, so let's nip this little guy in the bud.

PS: I'm also thinking Mike "Roe" Johnson is pretty funny since it would go right over a lot of people's heads, with them assuming it's about Roe v. Wade. Nope. Just a dick joke.

You expect me to believe that the leading mayonnaise brand in the world—a central ingredient in deviled eggs and deviled ham—is called "Hellmann's," and that's just a coincidence? Hell man = devil. Who's the real conspiracy theorist? 🧐

What annoys me to no end about "Web 2.0" and the social media era is that unlike most people, I actually have the technical ability to make my own sites, systems, etc. But people just want to check the same one or two apps over and over, so if you're not on there, no one sees you.

These apps could be following an open standard like browsers use for websites, but they'd rather own everything and be in total control of all that valuable content, even if they lack the resources to do it well.

Eventually, I'll probably settle on a single Twitter replacement. This will be determined not by follower count but by engagement. If just a few followers are giving me that dopamine rush by regularly liking, reposting, and responding, that wins.

@markmcelroy Right, this is the reason I'm not abandoning Mastodon anytime soon. I just wish more people would join, but a really shocking portion of the population thinks it's "too hard." It's kind of like Linux, I guess. No matter how easy it gets, people will always think it's hard. 🤷‍♂️

It really depends what you're on here for, of course. If it's just to connect with people socially, there are enough people for sure. But if you're like me trying to make business connections and sell books, it's not quite enough. I have to stop short of X and TikTok though. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

Anybody have recs for single-author science fiction and/or fantasy/paranormal short story collections? I'm especially interested in marginalized authors.

My faves so far:

  • 'Nathan Burgoine's Of Echoes Born (paranormal)
  • Zen Cho's Spirits Abroad (fantasy/paranormal)
  • Iona Datt Sharma's Not For Use In Navigation (mix of science fiction and fantasy)

Self-recs are cool, too!

Hey, ! Pitch your book as a list of things you'll find in it (✅) and things you won't (❌).

I'll start:

✅ high-tech gadgetry

✅ ghostly visitations

✅ outlandish drug trips

✅ stalker ex-boyfriend

✅ evil corporations

✅ college kids

❌ a linear narrative

❌ clear-cut heroes and villains

❌ a love triangle... oh wait, whoops

✅ a love triangle

Have you ever felt unsure about how much of what you "want" to do and then do was not actually desired beforehand but only rationalized after the fact to maintain a sense of continuity and control?

Now imagine your free will as a force pulling forward from the future rather than pushing ahead from the past. It's still you deciding what to do, just from the other direction.

It feels more like freedom to think of your path as being set by the portion of you in the past (the part of youself you actually know) than by the portion of you extending into the future (which the present you can never know). So our minds cope by telling us this is the real state of affairs.

Why would causality (i.e. time) actually move from future to past instead of the way that feels better? Maybe it's like vision: we can only see in the direction we're looking (and typically moving). Maybe memory is only what you see when you look that direction in time. We see only where we're going, not where we've been.

@miksimum Right, just a little thought experiment here. While taking a walk last night, I was listening to some audio about the philosophy of , and I suddenly had this thought, which gave me vertigo. That backwards flow of time PKD liked to go on about (and even wrote a full novel about) is finally starting to click for me.
