Just great, first the super typhoon and now this 😔 And that is NOT a "slight increase".

    A question for our friends from the , when should we use the adjective 'Filipino' vs the adjective 'Philippine'?

    @expatteacher@mastodon.online avatar

    @mariemarm

    Well, I've seen both terms used to describe a variety of things in different circumstances. For example, the terms have been used to describe language(s), cuisine, products, geography, schools, and countless other things from the .

    So just to pick one of those, when speaking of cuisine from the 🇵🇭, should we say 'Philippine cuisine', 'Filipino cuisine', or as you've suggested 'Tagalog cuisine'?

    “Love the Philippines” even when it’s Switzerland, Indonesia, UAE, Thailand, and a host of locations in other countries that are used in a promotional video for the Southeast Asian country.

    The Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DoT) was left red faced after the errant video containing footage of foreign locations purporting to be The Philippines was published on Facebook last week. Angry Filipinos quickly called out the government department for allowing the video to be published.

    The DoT apologized and condemned the release of the video once they realized the issue. It was part of the country’s latest tourism campaign which launched last month.

    Meanwhile, DDB Group Philippines, the agency responsible for producing the video had told the DoT that all the footage used were original but later admitted that those were stock videos taken from content provider Storyblocks. The agency took the video down in short order.

    The agency apologetically said that the video was meant to be a mood video to show what the final work is supposed to look like. Mood videos are not meant for public release.

    anton_hilado, to Philippines

    Okay so maybe I'll do another since it seems timely. I'm Anton, I'm from the and I'm currently a student in at University of Vermont.

    Within mathematics I specialize in and within number theory I specialize in . If I have to be even more particular, I work on automorphic forms, Galois representations (including p-adic Hodge theory), Shimura varieties, and arithmetic manifolds which cannot give rise to Shimura varieties. All of these things which seem rather broad are related to and somewhat unified by what is known as the Langlands program.

    I also have a master's degree in ; I currently do not do research related to physics (though some of the math that I use, such as the theta correspondence, were inspired by physics) but I have a soft spot for (maybe in the future I'll be able to work on that).

    Besides math I like a lot of stuff especially and especially . I also like especially of the genre, though I'm both too busy and too poor currently to play them. Like a lot of Filipinos who grew up in the 90's and 2000's I like and (especially from that era). I also like by which I just mean anything that looks cool to me. I mainly want to discuss on here, but by no means will I be posting about only that.

    My website is here:

    I also have a blog on math and physics:

    abolisyonista, to Philippines

    In the case of the , does not keep the fascists out but rather brings them into power. The question is, why is it that people vote for fascists? Is it because they are themselves fascist? No, I don't think so. I think people vote for fascists precisely because they are alienated from true political agency. presents itself as empowering, promising agency that people lack. People want lower prices, Marcos promises to enact their wishes, an avatar for the people's agency. But the agency presented by electoral fascism is precisely Spectacular—it is an image of power rather than power itself, a Spectacle in the Situationist sense.

    The challenge then is to smash this Spectacular agency and capacitate people to practice their agency directly—mutual aid, popular assemblies, direct democracy outside the state, etc.

    The ballot presents us with false Spectacular agency, and it's up to us to provide true agency.
