New Report from the Geena Davis Institute:

"Female gamers are less likely to relate to characters of their gender than men who play. Our report, “Changing the Narrative: Why Representation in Video Games Matters,” shares why writing nuanced female characters is important, and how to get it done.

I just watched (Disney) and I am… Underwhelmed. The first non-binary character in a Disney movie? The representation was so subtle, my partner missed it. While I get that this is an important step: Can we please please please go faster? It's 2023. Where is the non-binary lead we deserve???
(happy to see immigration stories on the big screens tho!)

IN OTHER NEWS...

came out of surgery a few hours ago. had a moment in the surgery room when i looked around and all the doctors and nurses were women.

am 57 years old and it was the first time in my life i looked around and it was all women, of all ethnicities and races, attending to my health.

and, more than ever, we need to uplift , especially and yes,

it feels like a silly little thing for me to do these iterations of Tusky

... amma call them Tusky because why not...

but it would be so amazing to come to a FLOSS project and see myself already included in the universe of people representing the work

Science is for everyone, but not everyone can see themselves there.

That’s one reason I love this beautifully illustrated, FREE to download comic book developed by Flint teachers, artists & plant biologists. Through classroom modules w real plants, high school students learn how traits evolve over time through natural selection w characters who look like more of them. And that matters toward building a more inclusive STEM future. https://hioh.education/monkeyflowers-graphic-novel

giamora,

@Sheril

This is so neat! Books, TV, and film play a huge role in inspiring young people to go into the STEM fields, and having more inclusive and accurate representation can only foster more ideas, more solutions, and more equity -- and hopefully a planet we can all cohabitate on peacefully.

Won't be surprised if this has been shared multiple times over already but this beautiful video left me bawling. Did not expect these feelings today.

How Sexist Is Hollywood? Check Out Geena Davis’s Spreadsheet https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/25/business/geena-davis-hollywood-sexism-gender.html

"In the 101 top-grossing G-rated films from 1990 to 2005, just 28% of speaking characters were female. Even in crowd scenes—even in animated crowd scenes—male characters vastly outnumber female ones. In the 56 top grossing films of 2018, women portrayed in positions of leadership were four times more likely than men to be shown naked."
