One more thing on the todo list: writing a blog post about . I've been using it on a personal instance for the last weeks and I'm pretty happy about the experience. It's my main search engine now, and I very rarely need to open another one.

In the meantime, here's a bit of info about it:

It took me a while, but I have successfully manipulated China's search engine, Baidu, to acknowledge, "Taiwan independent day" and "Independent Taiwan" without Baidu showing maps of Taiwan incorrectly being included as part of China. 😎

No idea how long it will last, but from America, with love.

(It was not hard. Their search ranks easily and all I needed was a few bots to favor the content I wanted)

Why doesn't #Tor use an #opensource #searchengine such as #searx by default?

Does a pretty good job & has 80+ instances available at:

https://searx.space/ 😀

That should ensure a better uptime & reliability than #duckduckgo & of course - way better everything - than #bing 👍

DuckDuckGo, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT's web search, Ecosia, and Qwant all stopped working this morning because of Bing API. 😂 And they want Microsoft Copilot deeply integrated with Windows OS. Imagine someone is unable to book emergency medical appointments because Microsoft Copilot is down or you can't withdraw money or transfer funds through netbanking because AI and screenshot services are down. This is a good example of why we must not trust someone like Microsoft for anything serious.

New bidder in the #SearchEngine alternative quest : #Stract. Clearly, the engine is young (2022), so expect a few gaps (it could do with a few more indexations), but it's promising. I particularly like the "optic" concept and the Explore tab 🤓

Archie, the Internet’s first search engine, is rescued and running:

A journey through busted tapes, the Internet Old Farts Club, and SPARCstations.
It's amazing, and a little sad, to think that something created in 1989 that changed how people used and viewed the then-nascent Internet had nearly vanished by 2024.

Do we have a for public repos? :git:

Right now my "default" is to go to GitHub, and then maybe GitLab and Codeberg...but that leaves out all the other hosts out there. Once happens we'll need it even more :fedi:

(By the way, I say "git" because that's where most code is, but if other kinds of repos are supported, even better! 🔍 )

Comparing search results for 'fide candidates 2024 standings' on private search engines:

@brave - Good overall results, including live tournament standings. The AI summarizer provides a helpful overview.

@duckduckgo - Relevant results from major chess sites. No obvious advantages over others.

@StartpageSearch - Decent results, but feel a bit more scattered/less focused than Brave.

@Mojeek - Great to see the new summary feature! Results are solid too.

I'm really disappointed with DuckDuckGo lately. It has been enshittified by adding the new AI feature and search quality has been deteriorated, so I don't trust them anymore. I'm thinking of switching to searXNG, but I'm not interested in self-hosting. So looking for trustworthy public instance which has strict no-log policy, any suggestions?

I was trying to figure out what #EidMubarak actually meant. Sadly, #DuckDuckGo is becoming much more susceptible to #enshittification.

I'm afraid if I want a real #SearchEngine, I may have to have to pay for it with #Kagi.

I'm still a little fuzzy about what "Eid Mubarak" means, but I think it means essentially "Happy Holidays" to those who are participating in the feast at the end of the month of Ramadan. So, if that's you, Eid Mubarak!
