Finally got around to switching to Octopus Flux, which gets us cheap electricity to charge the batteries during the night. Of course, the day it goes active we get glorious sunshine and now I have a full battery but nowhere to store the solar. shakes fist at sun

Yesterday I let my bot manage the inverter charging and discharging for the entire day. It did quite well! Our entire electricity demand was met for less than zero cost with solar and automated load shifting on the Octopus Agile tariff.

I hope no one minds a thread.

I purchased some more capacity 1300 Wh.

It's not sunny out but I'm capturing about 200 Watts despite being overcast. That's 50% of my maximum possible rate. Not bad.

Battery is at 30% and tells me it will be full in three or four hours depending on the capture rate.

Generations of solar panels: installation upgrade, nominal 63W to 375W. The old panel that served for around 30 years was still working, but a bit low-powered. De facto output seems to be around 6 times higher as well for the new one. The Victron system is also good at teasing out power despite some clouds.

The most annoying part was when I messed up the ”no tools needed” MC4 connectors and had to drive to get a new pair.

🌞 Sonnige Aussichten: Am 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴 decken Photovoltaikanlagen in Deutschland etwa 𝟯𝟰% des gesamten Strombedarfes.

Im Jahresdurchschnitt waren es letztes Jahr 𝟭𝟭.𝟴% (🔍 energy-charts.info), heute ist also sehr viel Solarenergie im Netz!

Wenn du deine Haushaltsgeräte über die Mittagszeit in Betrieb nehmen kannst, dann kannst du sie mit der Kraft der Sonne versorgen. Bist du Mittags nicht zuhause, kannst du vielleicht am nächsten Tag viel Wind am Abend nutzen oder z.B. das Wäschewaschen auf einen Tag verschieben, an dem du zuhause bist.

Solaranlagen werden übrigens oft nicht mehr nach Süden hin ausgerichtet, obwohl in der Himmelsrichtung die Einstrahlung der Sonne am höchsten ist. 🤔 Stattdessen neigt man eine Hälfte der Panels nach Osten und eine nach Westen. 🧭

Dies hat den Vorteil, dass man den Mittagspeak abflacht und in die Breite zieht. So wird der Zeitraum verlängert, in dem die Energie der Sonne genutzen werden kann.

Durch die gefallenen Kosten für Solarzellen in den letzten Jahren ist diese Ausrichtung auch bei privaten Anlagen auf entsprechenden Dächern inzwischen wirtschaftlich. Ebenso steigt die Autarkie vom Stromnetz und ein Stromspeicher kann kleiner dimensioniert werden. 🔋

Doch auch ohne eigene Solaranlage kannst du dadurch länger grüne Energie aus dem öffentlichen Stromnetz nutzen. 😉

Ich finde es erstaunlich und sehr befriedigend, dass selbst unsere popelige 600W-Solaranlage es in den Mittagsstunden oft schafft, nicht nur unseren eigenen Strombedarf zu decken, sondern sogar noch etwas ins Netz einzuspeisen. Ich freue mich schon darauf, wenn wir endlich die volle Leistung von 800W freischalten können.

Will probably produce around 4 TWh per year, at a very low cost, claimed to be $0.0132 per kWh (but @solar_chase always warns us that these auction prices aren't real costs ;).

Really positive news, innovation in and improvement of solarpanels is happening at high speed. For me personally also makes the discussion about nuclear power less relevant, it's businesscase becomes worse every year.

My electricity bill for last month: Import costs ~£50, export credits ~£90. Overall credit for April: £40 (including standing charges and running an electric car).
This is thanks to Solar PV, a House Battery and a flexible tariff from (Intelligent Go) - all orchestrated with
Capital cost was high but well worth it 👍

Our whole-home solar solution is live! We’re producing more power than we use, storing in a battery array, and no longer have to worry about those annoying PSPS power outages. And reducing that carbon footprint as the cherry on top!

Solar PV capacity still chugging along at +4 GW/year in the Netherlands, reaching 24 GW by end-2023. That's 1.35 kW per inhabitant, and way above the national peak demand (~18 GW)
Fed by generous government support, including continued net metering for residential systems.

The antennas near our house are 200kw.

I don't plan on touching them whilst grounded so I'm not too concerned, but I am now wondering if I can just put up an antenna and steal power. Screw solar and wind, our house will be powered by MEDIUM WAVE BABY!

My solar panel system is ready for testing. Two "6V 3W" panels connected in parallel. This weird backplane is connecting them using the ancient Chinese technique of hot glue. Using that screw I should be able to mount them to something.

Initial measurements show that this gizmo is making 180mA at 6V (~1.1W) with light clouds.

I'm waiting for a USB current meter, and soon I should be able to continue my "powering Raspberry Pi Pico" blog series.
