It seems hilariously ironic that, starting this year, my apartment switched to having us pay using another payment portal service, Bilt Rewards, which happens to use . I'm happy to report that it's as terrible as always and NOT , to nobody's surprise. In fact, as someone that's , it just succeeds at cluttering up the page. Thanks, Level Access, for integrating this kind of product into your portfolio and allowing its leader to run your company. Capitalism, man.

Yes, @tantacrul is right:

Music notation is extemely absurdly complex , but also this is is why I kinda found some OSTs of some RTSes playing in ancient times to be "meh"...

@tantacrul Really nice to see really getting more and leveraging the fact that data and interface can be abstracted so even if you'd cringe about it, one could even develop support for it, tho I'm convinced that noone should do so, but hey, it's possible...

So, I find myself amongst several other people advocating for improvements to the local dog park after the city announced a chunk of funding for such things, and we think we can get some additional assistance for funding to make the dog park . 🐕‍🦺🧑‍🦼🦮🧑‍🦽 :boost_requested: :at_me:

I'm looking for any advice or places to get started to see if we can get Americans with Disabilities Act funding or something similar for pouring concrete and repairing the existing paths can anyone give me some starting points? I know some parks in the area that are in much better shape and have such paths that we'll be pointing at as examples as well.

Thanks so much to everyone who has voted for their top 10 songs. We have well over 300 tracks voted for now, and we’re going to play the top 100 in a live 10 hour party this Saturday, complete with plenty of fun Mastodon interaction using the hashtag.
I took a sneaky look at the chart as it currently stands, and mate, there’s everything to play for. Things are close enough right now that I wouldn’t guarantee that the song currently at the top of the charts will stay there.
So, if you’ve not voted yet, it’s quick and .
We’re honoured to have the chance each year to bring a bit of fun and cheer into the world and look forward to many of our Mastodon friends joining us. Ready to vote? I hope so because you only have until 11:59 PM US Eastern time on Thursday. Then the chart closes and we get to work on putting the live show together. EDIT: See important context from visually impaired users in the replies!

Friendly reminder to help our visually impaired community: avoid hashtags in the middle of your posts

Many people use screen-readers. It can be annoyingly difficult to parse things like "I went to the hashtag store to buy some hashtag bread but I got hashtag screwed when the last loaf was hashtag sole doubt ha ha ha ha"

Please remember to put your hashtags at the end, and make sure to capitalize within the hashtag where appropriate!

fastfinge,

@neatchee As a blind person myself, using voiceover on IOS, I actually do put hashtags in the middle of my post. Often I write a lot, and I don’t have the character count left to hashtag at the end. Also, this problem is one that can be solved with screen reader settings. In general, I have voiceover set to ignore the hash symbol. So posts just read like that symbol doesn’t exist. When I am specifically interested in hashtags, I change the setting to hear the symbol again. Honestly I kind of thought everyone does this? I’m more concerned that people post alt-text. What do other folks think?

ooh, log analysis for today. Unfortunately the default setup is not for users. There's a way to hack around this, it is outside the scope of the room but will be required if you are dependent on a screen reader. I will show this off in today's video, just performed the proof of concept to make sure it's doable :) @RealTryHackMe

Day 7 of 2023 with a , wherein I have to hack the system before I can hack the system :) THis one was initially not but we were able to pop a shell and make it see reason. That I had to do this isn't good, and I hope that me documenting this in this way will show off how disruptive this kind of thing is, and how easy it can be avoided. This one's a tad longer than the others because of this, as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq_ZVbBsfRk

Cool: https://www.accessibletravelnyc.com/wintervillagebryantpark wheelchair users can skate on the Bryant Park ice rink! (2019, but the section of https://bryantpark.org/activities/bank-of-america-winter-village-at-bryant-park confirms.)

Uncool: https://www.accessibletravelnyc.com/onlocationtours (from 2019). One can try super hard to arrange and confirm wheelchair access ahead of time, and STILL run into nonsense like this. Argh!

Not once does that website suggest that should be (to even constitute HTML), , or .

But HTML First thinking starts with actual HTML, used according to purpose, accessible to everyone.

That’s the “HTML First” we need.

(I’m cooking a book about that kind of HTML First, but it’s too early to make announcements.)

Halfway considering doing streams/videos where I go through 2023 with a to illustrate what challenges exist and how we our way around them. Honestly not sure if literally anyone would be interested in seeing that though

zersiax,

Ok, the halfway became a whole way, and I have now started this project: The 2023 showcase: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoI1JGnSzOVKWI2fOpymnWcQtgxPLoW4X

Basically, the idea is that I go through the tasks with a , make sure the content is for as many viewers as I can. That means I narrate what I'm doing, the screen reader is audible when required, and the screen reader output is also visible on the screen.
Subtitles and transcriptions may not be up yet by the time this goes live, as it takes a minute for the autocaptioning to catch up. If it turns out these are really, really bad, which is possible, I will transcribe the videos myself using Whisper and make sure they get added to the videos.
My aim with these videos is to show off the accessibility issues that exist, point out easy fixes to them, give people who are curious about this field an introduction they can actually consume in a way that works for them, as well as just create awareness that we're here, we're not leaving, and we'd like to be part of the conversation is pursued.
Any feedback is, of course, more than welcome, and I wil incorporate it in videos going forward.

zersiax,

Here we go, with day 6 of the TryHackMe Advent of Cyber 2023. This time we covered buffer overflows in a way tat was, unfortunately, not at all as they built themselves a little game. A game that, if my eyes don't deceive me, I've seen before last year :P Neverthelss through some sleuthing all questions were answerable, with number six on the video playlist as a result :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G55paQS24Jc

zersiax,

Here we are, day 8 of the @RealTryHackMe challenges using a and not using a screen. This task was not due to the VM not having any kind of audio output configured, therefore forcing me to rely on OCR only. This took absolutely forever and therefore happened mostly offscreen. I'm uncertain how well today's task would've progressed with it on, but it certainly would have helped. Anyway, here's the video :) https://youtu.be/Hr7GhZIx59Q
